Titans' Mike Borgonzi talks Senior Bowl and the 'Cabinet'

USA Today29-01-2025

The new Tennessee Titans front office has descended on Mobile, Alabama and the Senior Bowl to meet with some of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.
While the braintrust was sighted on the sidelines and on the field during drills, reporters caught up with new general manager Mike Borgonzi and posed some interesting questions about the game and the environment.
The @seniorbowl is important for the Titans draft process for two key reasons, via new GM Mike Borgonzi:
– interviews
– competition pic.twitter.com/DfxPl1Owxm

'A big part of it is the interview process, which we started last night,' he said. 'Looking for guys to compete, and going against best of the best out there,'
The Senior Bowl is a tremendous event and will give the Titans exposure to a bunch of prospects that could end up on their draft board. For a team that needs to retool its roster, this is extremely important.
With a new front office in place, there were also questions about the structure and the number of voices that would be involved with decision-making.

'Different ideas, we don't all think alike. We come from different backgrounds, but we all speak the same language.' He said, 'The more smart people we can get in here with good ideas, the better.'
On top of Borgonzi, head coach Brian Callahan, and president Chad Brinker, the Titans just brought in experienced personnel men Dave Ziegler and Reggie McKenzie for different roles. If they can utilize this influx of experience in the right way, the Titans are poised to improve from their 3-14 season rather quickly.

Tennessee Titans to have joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons ahead of preseason game

When the NFL announced its 2025 schedule, the Tennessee Titans discussed the possibility of taking part in joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons in weeks one and two of the preseason. On Monday, Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris announced that the arrangements have been made and that they will hold joint practices with the Titans ahead of the Week 2 preseason game in Atlanta. This approach should help speed up the process of getting Cam Ward up to speed with live reps against another franchise. The two teams will hold joint sessions on August 12 and 13 prior to their August 15 battle. At this point, no specifics have been given on what will take place for the Titans on August 14, but with so many new faces it will likely be some type of walkthrough. Advertisement During his first season as head coach, Brian Callahan held joint practices with the Seattle Seahawks prior to their Week 2 preseason battle, after which he eventually held out many veterans from the subsequent game. WIth so many new and young faces fighting it out for spots on the depth chart, it will be interesting to see what his philosophy is now in his second year. The Titans will be holding another open practice on Tuesday and Callahan will likely address the media, with Morris making the announcement during his press availability in Atlanta on Monday, Callahan could offer more insight during that press availability. Tennessee Titans have two of NFL's worst contracts entering 2025

Tennessee Titans have two of NFL's worst contracts entering 2025 The Tennessee Titans had an aggressive offseason knowing they needed to build around whichever player they selected with the No. 1 overall pick. That player wound up being quarterback Cam Ward out of Miami, a move that has given some new hope to a franchise that hasn't reached the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. However, the offseason also included some questionable moves. With Mike Borgonzi taking over as the general manager for the first time in his career. When looking at the worst contracts across the NFL, the Titans were featured twice on the list from Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report. Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, with his four-year, $76.4 million deal, came in at No. 9 on the list. It's easy to understand the rationale behind the Tennessee Titans' 2024 trade to acquire cornerback L'Jairus Sneed. Good cornerbacks are hard to find, and Sneed had excelled in Steve Spagnuolo's defense with the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, it was odd to see Tennessee immediately give a 27-year-old corner who had never been to a Pro Bowl a deal worth $19.1 million annually—which has him as the league's 11th-highest-paid cornerback a year later. Borgonzi inherited that contract, so it's difficult to hold that deal against him. However, coming in at No. 3 on the list was arguably the biggest move Borgonzi made during free agency: signing Dan Moore Jr. to a four-year, $82 million deal. The Titans entered free agency knowing that they were likely to use the No. 1 overall pick on Miami quarterback Cam Ward. Therefore, aggressively addressing the offensive line was logical. However, there isn't a world in which Moore should be the league's 10th-highest-paid tackle in terms of annual salary, which he currently is. Fortunately for the Titans, they have a quarterback on a rookie contract so they can afford to overpay right now for some lesser-tiered players. With that said, there's a good chance these deals will become even more of a talking point in the future.

DCE rattled in post-game drama as axed QLD player sends statement to Billy Slater

Daly Cherry Evans' week has gone from bad to worse after the axed Queensland captain flopped in Manly's hiding by the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night. Billy Slater's decision to drop DCE from his Origin Game 2 side failed to illicit the sort of response the Sea Eagles would have hoped for as Titans coach Des Hasler got one over his old club to mastermind a 28-8 win. And a wild post-match incident with a fan topped it off for Cherry-Evans. On the other hand, Beau Fermor sent a statement to Slater that his axing from the Queensland side was the wrong call after starring in Gold Coast's big win. The Titans are still bottom of the ladder, while the loss sees Manly lose further ground on the top eight ahead of next week's bye. The Sea Eagles suffered a double blow, with powerhouse forward Haumole Olakau'atu also dislocating a shoulder after dropping the ball over the tryline, with the injury likely to sideline him for a number of weeks. But it was another insipid defeat away to a lowly ranked opponent that should leave Manly coach Anthony Seibold concerned. Gold Coast had 11 players unavailable, with two in Origin camps and nine out with injury. And for the first time since 2015, Manly had no players on Origin duty and were essentially at full strength, barring the absence of Lehi Hopoate (concussion). Many expected a big game from DCE after his Maroons axing but apart from one classy try assist in the first half, the Manly skipper and his side were underwhelming. Cherry-Evans had two wayward kicks that gave the Titans seven-tackle sets and failed to spark his side's spluttering attack, with fullback Tom Trbojevic also struggling in his return from injury. DCE was also left rattled in wild post-match scenes when a supporter ran onto the field and grabbed him, before being tackled to the ground by two security officials. But the Manly skipper insisted the disappointment of being dropped as Maroons skipper didn't affect his performance. "The start of the week was tough," Cherry-Evans said. "On Sunday, I got the news and on Monday I had to go to training and face the boys "After that it honestly started to feel normal. The initial news was tough but I moved on and thought we were going to come here and play some good footy. "Based on our preparation, it looked like all the signs were there. Unfortunately, the most important part of the week is showing up on game day and we didn't do that." DCE also addressed speculation the Roosters could get cold feet and pull the pin on an expected move there next season, due to his patchy form. "I sort of don't understand that stuff - I stay out of it," DCE added. "All I can do is control my footy at Manly and speculation will be speculation. But obviously we've just lost a couple in a row so it would be silly for me to be worrying about stuff like that." WATCH: Daly Cherry-Evans was grabbed by a fan in wild scenes after the loss to the Titans #NRL #Titans #Manly — NRLCentral (@nrlcentrall) June 13, 2025 While DCE struggled on Friday night, fellow Maroons discard Fermor showed that Slater might have made the wrong call. Fermor didn't have much chance to make an impact in limited minutes off the bench for the Maroons in the Origin decider and lost his spot to Kurt Capewell for Game 2. RELATED: Calls for immediate change amid apparent NSW rule breach Nathan Cleary comes clean amid rumour around Mary Fowler But Fermor - who has been one of the form second-rowers in the NRL this season - had an outstanding game for the Titans and was instrumental to their 20-point home victory. Fermor played a key role in a number of Gold Coast four-pointers and made a last-ditch, try-saving tackle on Olakau'atu, that ultimately resulted in injury for the Manly star. Gold Coast's Alofiana Khan-Pereira also became the fastest man to score 50 tries in the NRL era, bagging a double in his 52nd NRL game. What a week for Beau Fermor! After being relieved of his duties for @QLDmaroons he had a stormer for @GCTitans tonight in a surprise 28-8 win over @SeaEagles A busted forehead couldn't stop him! He believes the Titans can turn the season around! — Zane Bojack (@zanofc) June 13, 2025 Billy really played Fermor 15 mins then drops him to have Cotter start on an edge😂! Glad we have you back though Beau! That QLD 12 Jersey is yours once QLD has a coaching staff change👍#NRLTitansManly — (@skunjip_29) June 13, 2025 How the hell is Fermor not starting on the left edge for QLD will do me! #nrltitansmanly — Michael Andrews (@Michael26123906) June 13, 2025 with AAP
