Sanford, Lee County chosen for affordable housing initiative

Yahoo13-03-2025

The City of Sanford has been selected by the University of North Carolina to participate in the 'Our State, Our Homes' program, an 18-month initiative to improve access to and availability of affordable housing.
The initiative is part of UNC's Carolina Across 100 project, which aims to 'enhance the quality of life for all people in the state' through meaningful partnerships.
The 'Our State, Our Homes' program will connect the S3 Housing Connect Taskforce and City of Sanford and Lee County staff with UNC's faculty, staff and students from various disciplines to examine affordable housing and develop a plan of action that suits the community's needs and resources.
'This program is provided at no cost to participants,' explained Tradell Adkins, city planner and liaison to S3. 'The only commitment required is our time and effort to determine best practices and identify strategies to address affordable housing needs in Sanford.'
Sanford/Lee County was among 14 community teams chosen to participate. The teams — made up of business, civic, education, nonprofit, faith-based and government entities — represent 22 North Carolina counties, each with their own unique challenges.
Sanford and Lee County represent Team 9: 'The Heart of the Carolinas,' a name that reflects its 'well-centered' location in the state.
'This program avoids a one-size-fits-all approach,' Adkins said. 'We will have access to real-time local housing data to tailor solutions specific to Sanford and Lee County.'
Along with City of Sanford and Lee County staff, Sanford's team includes Lee County Re-Entry Services, Trillium Health Resources and Brick Capital Community Development Corp. The cohort will participate directly in forums and sessions, and then share their training with local organizations to drive implementation.

Questions Abound at UNC with Bill Belichick at Center of Attention

Questions Abound at UNC with Bill Belichick at Center of Attention originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Belichick leaving the NFL for the college game was a big enough story to spike interest in North Carolina, an oft-middling ACC program. But the ensuing media storm surrounding the 73-year-old's relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson has seen the attention on Chapel Hill ratchet up. Advertisement In a recent 'SportsCenter' appearance, Belichick said his girlfriend 'doesn't have anything to do with' UNC football after an awkward 'CBS Sunday Morning' interview in which she shut down a question. For as much off-field intrigue as the program has garnered in recent weeks with Belichick and Hudson in the spotlight, questions remain about the Tar Heels' on-field product ahead of their first season without coach Mack Brown in charge since 2018. 'Honestly, no one really has any idea what to expect on the field when they start this season,' an anonymous ACC assistant said in Athlon Sports' 2025 College Football Preview magazine. These comments were made in the Tar Heels' exclusive scouting report in Athlon's annual magazine, which is available for purchase online and at newsstands nationwide. North Carolina coach Bill Belichick and girlfriend Jordon Hudson have made headlines in recent weeks after a viral "CBS Sunday Morning" Lee-Imagn Images North Carolina is coming off a 6-7 campaign and a fifth consecutive bowl loss. The program only has one season with double-digit wins (11-3 in 2015) since the end of Brown's first go-around in 1997. But Belichick, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, could turn things around if he catches on fast at the college level, which functions a bit differently than the league where he made his hay for the past five decades. Advertisement 'How Bill [Belichick] adjusts to the structure of the college game is gonna be crucial,' the scout said. 'It's less time you get with the players, which means it's less football intelligence.' The Tar Heels signed the 36th-ranked high school recruiting class, a step down from recent years. But their transfer haul more than makes up the difference. UNC's 40-player portal class is ranked ninth by 247 and is littered with Power 4 talent. 'The real interesting piece we're watching is how [GM Michael] Lombardi and the coaches approach the NIL portion,' the ACC assistant coach said. There have been reports that North Carolina is not throwing around money in the same fashion that some other FBS programs are in the NIL era with revenue sharing on the horizon. But Belichick's portal haul speaks for itself. The chance to play for the greatest defensive mind in NFL history is surely an attractive prospect, too. Six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick takes over a Tar Heels team that has never won an ACC championship.© Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images UNC has been branding itself as the NFL's '33rd team' with Belichick and Lombardi planning to bring their pro experience and approach to campus. Those comments caught the eye of the anonymous assistant coach in their league. Advertisement 'They've been vocal about criticizing other programs on how they spend and evaluate,' the coach said. 'There's talk about how they're going to become an advanced, pro-level scouting program that implements NIL better. We'll see. We do expect a better overall haul from these guys in high school recruiting than from Mack [Brown], at least until the novelty wears off or Bill gets a bad reputation.' It's fair to question whether Belichick's reputation already has taken a hit. And attention on him, Hudson and the Tar Heels will only ramp up in the lead-up to their Sept. 1 season opener against TCU when the Belichick era truly begins. UNC golfer and National Player of the Year earns PGA Tour Card

UNC golfer and National Player of the Year earns PGA Tour Card UNC adds another name to the PGA Tour roster this week as David Ford received his PGA TOUR Card on Tuesday. Ford will join Davis Love III, Tom Scherrer, Mark Wilson, and Pat Moore as Tar Heel representatives on the Tour. Ford has been a dynamic golfer for most of his life, winning the Junior Players Championship and Rolex Tournament of Champions before even joining the Tar Heel family. Once he arrived at college, Ford was an instant success. In his first year, he was the No. 1 player on the Rolex AJGA and Golfweek junior rankings, winning ACC Freshman of the Year in 2022, followed by ACC Player of the Year in 2023. He won the 2022 Southern Amateur and 2023 Jones Cup Invitational. He made his first PGA Tour start at the 2023 Barbasol Championship, where he even made the cut after the first two rounds. This season, Ford walked away with the Haskins Award as the NCAA National Player of the Year. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had this to say: "Officially welcoming Luke, Gordon, and David to the PGA TOUR family marks the beginning of an exciting journey for three rising stars — and further underscores why this is the most competitive Tour in the world. PGA TOUR University is one of several direct pathways to the top of our sport, and we're committed to continuing to reward the highest achievers in college golf for years to come.' Ford certainly still has his best years to come and will get the opportunity to play in many PGA Tour events in the future. Earning his Tour Card now gives him a ticket to play on the highest level of professional golf in North America. The amateur is no longer an amateur; now, he is a professional and represents North Carolina proudly. North Carolina basketball has tripled roster spending for 2025-26 season

North Carolina basketball has tripled roster spending for 2025-26 season A report states that UNC basketball is spending triple for the roster. The 2025-26 season is a very important one for the North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program. After a season in which they barely made the NCAA Tournament and then had a first-round exit, it's on Hubert Davis and the staff to get things in order. And they are getting the resources to do just that. The Tar Heels will have a whole new roster next season, with five new starters and the return of Seth Trimble who was a key piece a year ago. They re-tooled the roster, landing an impressive transfer class as well as bringing in a top 10 recruiting class. With the addition of Jim Tanner at General Manager, key moves were made and the money was spent. In fact, a lot of money was spent. Per Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes, the Tar Heels' have surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster. Here is what Barnes wrote in Monday's report: Multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster, approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago. Men's basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner's $850,000 salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university's support of its prized program. It will take time to see if this roster is constructed correctly, but going out and spending money is a good first step for the program. The struggles of last season forced North Carolina to do this and rightfully so. Davis can't afford another year of being on the bubble, despite making the tournament in two of those three seasons on the bubble. There needs to bean improvement made to make the program feel confident about the future. And in this new NIL era, North Carolina is hopefully finally catching up.
