ICC Umpire Dies At 41, Brother Says: "Went To Peshawar To Have Abdominal Fat Removed"
Seyda Jan, Bismillah Jan Shinwari's brother, told the news outlet: "He got sick and went to Peshawar, saying he wanted to have abdominal fat removed. He was hospitalised for a few days. The surgery was performed, but unfortunately, he passed away at 5 PM after the operation. We brought his body back through Torkham overnight and buried him in our ancestral cemetery in Achin."
Jay Shah, ICC chairman, mourned Bismillah's death. "His contributions to the game were huge, and he will be deeply missed by the cricket community. We are profoundly saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones," he said in a press statement release by the ICC.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board also paid tribute to the umpire. "The Afghanistan Cricket Board extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire Afghan cricket fraternity. We pray that the Almighty Allah (SWT) grants him the highest ranks in Jannah and gives patience and strength to his loved ones during this difficult time," a post read on its X handle.

USA Cricket terminates ACE deal amid governance dispute
USA Cricket has terminated its long-term commercial agreement with American Cricket Enterprise Inc. (ACE), marking a dramatic rupture in a partnership once billed as the cornerstone of cricket's rise in the United States. Just last month, this publication reported how a contractual dispute between ACE and the board threatened USA Cricket's Olympic certification, its standing with the International Cricket Council (ICC), and even its authority over the sport domestically. In 2019, USA Cricket handed ACE — co-founded by Sameer Mehta, Satyan Gajwani, Vijay Srinivasan, and Vineet Jain — exclusive 50-year rights to operate elite T20 cricket in the country. In return, ACE pledged to finance national teams, build six stadiums, and establish professional leagues. Those promises coincided with the national side's on-field growth: co-hosting the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, stunning Pakistan en route to the Super 8s, and earning the ICC's Associate Member Men's Team Performance of the Year award. One of ACE's flagship projects was Major League Cricket (MLC), a professional T20 league that has completed three seasons. Ravi Bishnoi: From India's trump card to T20I outsider. What went wrong?
In modern-day T20 cricket, it is tough being a wrist spinner. Pitches are getting flatter, stadium dimensions now hold negligible importance for swashbuckling batters who muscle the ball with added stroke play, and the game is now largely won by teams who outscore the opposition with the this unforgiving format, challenging is the task of such a breed of spinners who are always expected to deceive batters and change the course of the game. One day, you proudly boast with figures of 3 for 25. On another, you're smashed for 45 in four leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi understood this reality very early in his career and chose a unique style to bowl with. Instead of relying on big and loopy flights, he mastered the art of quick pace, troubling batters with his gripping googlies. And it indeed worked. It made him India's go-to wicket-taker for a good duration of time in the shortest format, even climbing to the No. 1 T20I spot in ICC rankings in December 2023. But fast forward to August 2025, as India announced their Asia Cup squad, his name was nowhere to be seen. Not just from the playing XI, but also the 24-year-old was unable to make the cut in the list of reserves. A silent disappearance that nobody seems to be talking about, but probably should. Because this isn't just about a dip in form. It's about how a genuine wicket-taker, once India's trump card, suddenly finds himself out of the T20I scheme of things. Is the lack of batting skills of the current No. 7 ranked bowler possibly playing a role, if not the biggest one, in his exclusion?How did Bishnoi Break Into T20I Reckoning?It is essential to rewind the clock back to Bishnoi's early days in international cricket. He made his debut for India in February 2022 against West Indies, picking up 2/17 in the first game and winning the Player of the Match award. Truth be told, it didn't take much time for the Rajasthan-born cricketer to step into Yuzi Chahal's shoes. After a string of disappointing performances, Chahal played his last T20I in August 2023, and it almost seemed like the management had quietly moved on. Bishnoi had slotted his place with Kuldeep Yadav as India's wrist spinners. And he didn't disappoint. In no time, he became an out-and-out match winner with the ball for India, bagging the Player of the Series award against Australia in December 2023. He had gained the much-needed confidence through a sensational IPL season that helped his franchise Lucknow Super Giants reach the playoffs in successive rise was never a shocker. Climbing up the ranks in domestic cricket, the young spinner had already announced himself on the big stage as the highest wicket-taker in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2020. In 2024, Krunal Pandya couldn't contribute much in the spin department before mystery spinner Digvesh Rathi emerged as a breakout star in 2025, taking 14 wickets in 13 matches at a far better economy of 8.25. While Rathi thrived, partner Bishnoi's performance crumbled, shockingly on the conducive home turf that turned and the last two seasons, five teams have conceded fewer than 9 runs per over at Ekana, showing how helpful the pitch has been. But Bishnoi managed only 9 wickets at an economy of 10.84 from 11 games there in IPL 2025, often looking out of rhythm and short on wasn't that batting conditions were impossible. In fact, at Ekana, the average first-innings score in IPL 2025 was 192.8, while batting second averaged 188.5, so scoring was no doubt high, but the surface still offered help for bowlers who could find the right spot to bowl, and that is exactly what Rathi did in his rookie season, which Bishnoi didn't. And in a season where he needed to make a statement to stay in contention for India's T20I setup, he let the opportunity slip through his hands, and has no one but himself to blame for the below-par in Indian ThreadsBishnoi last played for India in T20Is against England in January earlier this year, where he showed glimpses of his old self. In the fourth T20I, he even picked up a three-wicket haul, reminding everyone that he still has the knack of leaving an impact in the wickets tally. But things had begun to disrupt for him long before this in the T20 World Cup 2024, he was nowhere to be seen and picked. India went on to pick Chahal again on account of his stellar season for the Rajasthan Royals where he picked up 18 wickets. Not a shadow of doubt over Chahal's calibre, but Bishnoi did nothing so shambolic that it does not even allow him to be a standby player. Why didn't the management stick to a single thought process? Why go back to a player they had moved on? Clearly, no clarity. No India toured South Africa in November 2024, Bishnoi struggled to make it count, while comeback-man Varun Chakravarthy was in the form of his life, taking 12 wickets in just four matches. Chakravarthy carried that purple patch into the recent England series too and was adjudged the Player of the Series with 14 wickets, cementing his place in India's T20I plans. Varun is also now part of the ODI scheme of things as well, having finished as India's joint-highest wicket-taker in the title-winning run at the 2025 Champions Trophy. He is growing in leaps and bounds, both in performance and in earning the confidence of the Bishnoi's opportunities were and are shrinking. In the 2024 Bangladesh tour of India, he featured in just one match, the third T20I, a dead rubber, where he picked up three wickets, but it wasn't enough to change the minds of the team management. After the England series came the IPL, and that's where things got worse. Opportunities have been few and far between for him. Back then, just days after becoming the No. 1 T20I bowler, he was dropped for the second T20I in Gqeberha in South Africa, and in current times, despite Gautam Gambhir's era promising players a longer rope, he hasn't quite had that for All-roundersDid Bishnoi's limited batting skills also add to his struggles? Maybe, as teams look for complete package players who can contribute with both bat and ball. That's where someone like Axar Patel has surged ahead. Consistent with the ball and reliable with the bat, Patel not only became a regular in India's T20I setup but also briefly served as the vice-captain in the England bilateral quickfire 47 in the T20 World Cup final underlines his ability to bat up the order as well. Now leading the Delhi Capitals, he has cemented his place as a dependable all-round option, leaving specialists like Bishnoi fighting harder for spots with Chakravarthy being a no-brainer pick. Important to mention, chinaman Kuldeep Yadav played his last T20I game against Proteas in the finale of T20 World Cup has 61 wickets from 42 T20Is at an impressive economy of 7.35, numbers that are decent. But the struggles of IPL 2025 have pushed him down the pecking order. The only question is whether the yardstick is the same for everyone. If IPL performances are the benchmark, then his case has suffered. But if international performances are what matter, he's still done enough to stay in contention. Unfortunately, in head coach Gautam Gambhir's era, that hasn't been the after a sensational IPL season, batter Shreyas Iyer couldn't find a spot, and Bishnoi doesn't even make the reserves, whereas an orthodox T20 player Washington Sundar gets the nod in reserves, largely for his batting depth.T20 cricket today is about the all-guns-blazing approach, and maybe that's why teams lean towards players who bring something with the bat too. India's batting has been exceptional, making this team arguably one of the most dangerous in the world, but the balance between process and result is Bishnoi hasn't vanished, he has ample time to again take the recovery stride of his long run-up, but his road back into India's T20I setup would be far from easy.
