KTMB blames cable theft for train delays up north, plans RM12.8 million prevention upgrade

By: Bernama Text Size: Since 2024, KTMB's total losses from cable theft in the northern sector has reached RM1.44 million, comprising RM1.28 million in 2024 and RM162,000 as of March 2025. — File picture by Hari Anggara Kuala Lumpur: Cable theft involving the signalling and communication systems on three Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) northern routes today has caused disruption and train delays of more than 60 minutes for both the Northern Komuter and Electric Train Services (ETS). KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road - Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting - Bukit Merah - Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat - Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected.
Advertisement The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral - Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth - Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth - KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar - KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat - Padang Besar). In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh - Butterworth - Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes. KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms. KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year. 'This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation,' he said. As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas. Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing. Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB Auxiliary Police with cooperation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft. 'We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime. 'We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country,' he added. Syndicate using courier services to transport subsidised cooking oil busted
BUTTERWORTH: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has exposed a new tactic in misappropriating subsidised cooking oil packs using courier services following a raid on a warehouse in Kampung Sungai Puyu here today. Its Penang branch director S. Jegan said 14,380 packets of 1kg subsidised cooking oil packs were seized from the warehouse, along with a lorry and other documents, with a total value of RM204,500. "Preliminary investigations found that the wholesaler used courier services to send the packs in large quantities to an address in Perlis while the packs were brought to the courier warehouse in a lorry in deliveries of twice a month," he told reporters at a media conference at the location of the raid. A man, 60, who was the driver of the lorry was arrested after he failed to provide any license, permit or documents to conduct business, to store or use the controlled item. Gerik crash: Survivor recounts being thrown out, body landing on him
GERIK: The tragic accident at Km53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik, that claimed the lives of 15 students from the Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) must have left a traumatic impact on the survivors. One such survivor, Abdul Wafiy Kamarudin, 23, when sharing the harrowing moments with Bernama, said the accident had such a strong impact so much so he was flung out of the bus, and most terrifyingly, a victim's body landed on him. Abdul Wafiy, a sixth-semester student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education, said he was looking at his mobile phone in the dimness of the night but could feel the bus was on moving quickly as it descended a winding, hilly road. "The bus driver stopped briefly to check the vehicle's brakes before continuing the journey, and suddenly at around 1am, the bus overturned, causing me to be thrown out of the window and into a drain. "The situation at that time was very I was shocked to find a body on top of me. "I was forced to push it off me to save myself," he said when met while collecting his personal belongings at the Gerik district police headquarters here today. However, the youngest among six siblings from Kampung Pak Kancil, Setiu in Terengganu is grateful because he only suffered minor injuries to his hands and face. Meanwhile, Mohd Zaki Ismail, the father to victim Rohadatul Aisy, 21, said his daughter contacted him at about 3am to say that she had been involved in an accident. "At that time, she (Rohadatul Aisy) said she was unable to move due to pain in both her neck and waist but a friend had helped carry her out of the bus. "I immediately left Kampung Gong Badang, Besut in Terengganu at 8 am and arrived at the Gerik Hospital to learn that my daughter suffered a fractured hip," he said. He also said that Rohadatul is receiving further treatment at the Besut Hospital, while he and his wife, Norliza Ghazali, are waiting to retrieve their child's personal belongings from the Gerik police headquarters. In the early morning incident yesterday, 15 UPSI students died when a chartered bus from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza at JRTB near Tasik Banding. The accident also resulted in 33 others being injured, including the bus driver and conductor, as well as the driver and three passengers of the multi-purpose vehicle. – Bernama

Tawau police bust ketum operation, nab drug suspect in separate raid

TAWAU: A man in his 30s was arrested at PPR Taman Sri Semarak around 10:30 AM on Monday for allegedly boiling and distributing 21 bottles of ketum juice, sold at RM20 each. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was caught resting in his living room during the raid. Police found 21 transparent 1.5L bottles of suspected ketum juice, totalling 31.2 litres and worth about RM350, hidden in two refrigerators. Advertisement He is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which carries fines or imprisonment upon conviction. The suspect tested negative for drugs and has no prior criminal record. In a separate case, a 20-year-old local man was arrested along Jalan Takada at 3:15 PM the same day for suspicious behaviour. He handed over 0.90 grams of syabu (methamphetamine) worth RM100 to police. He also tested negative for drugs and has no criminal history.
