‘Every day is a milestone': Unity 101 Community Radio celebrates 20th anniversary

Yahoo04-03-2025
A community radio station in Southampton is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year by holding a ten-month series of cultural events to bring communities together through music and culture.
Unity 101 Community Radio was created two decades ago by Ram 'Kelly' Kalyan, who wanted to create a radio station 'for the community, by the community.'
In that time, 178 people have volunteered at the radio studio on St Mary's Road.
Over 20 years the radio station has broadcast both live and pre-recorded shows in English, Bangla, Mandarin and Cantonese, Gujarati, Hindi, Dari, Polish, Punjabi, Urdu, and African/Caribbean Creole.
Since its inception, Kelly has been station manager at the radio station and can often be found sitting outside the main studio creating audio packages, writing scripts, and helping the next generation of budding DJ's.
'It's a passion of love,' Kelly told the Echo, as he reflected on the 20th anniversary of Unity 101.

'I'm over the moon of the work we've done in the last 20 years. I think our volunteers are second to none, their commitment is unbelievable, it's like a family.
'We're passionate about serving the community, we don't often say it, but we do it.
'Every day is a milestone, when someone achieves their outcomes, it's satisfying. When a presenter goes on air, it's satisfying.
'When you talk to people, they speak highly about us and we're a respected station. We've got a clear vision, and we've never deviated from that.'
To celebrate the landmark anniversary the community radio station will celebrate with 'A World of Cultures.'
The celebration will see community events in five different locations – including the The Design Chapel, Polish Club, and De Ja Vu – beginning on Sunday, March 30, and will take place on the last Sunday of each month.
Kelly said: 'We've been serving the community on air and now we want to serve them face-to-face.
'We've always broadcasted in 10 languages, we want to celebrate the different cultures, food, and storytelling of each language.
'Each language is represented by a volunteer that speaks that language, so we're taking that into five different venues for the whole family to come along have some snacks, say hello, take part in some entertainment workshops, and we can all have a better understanding of each other.'

Kumail Nanjiani describes meeting Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg — and why Musk 'didn't like' his show 'Silicon Valley'

" Silicon Valley" followed a crew of lame, socially awkward tech bros. The real Valley leaders weren't impressed. Kumail Nanjiani, an actor from the hit 2010s HBO show, said that he met both Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. On Mike Birbiglia's "Working it Out" podcast, Nanjiani said that neither tech mogul was quite pleased with him. Nanjiani said that Musk "didn't like the show" — and specifically its first scene. At the start of "Silicon Valley," Kid Rock performs a rock set with electric guitars and strobe lights. After setting off sparklers, the camera cuts to the audience, revealing a scattered crowd of nerdy tech guys not paying attention. "Elon was upset," Nanjiani said. "He was like, 'Well, the parties I go to are much cooler than these parties.'" Musk is known to party. In 2023, he attended a meeting with France's then-Prime Minister Emannuel Macron unshaven. Hours earlier, he was spotted on the dance floor of a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Nanjiani shared his response to Musk's criticism: "You're one of the richest people in the world. We're losers on the show. Of course, your parties are better than my parties. What are you talking about?" The "Silicon Valley" actor said he met Mark Zuckerberg briefly backstage at an awards ceremony — and the Meta CEO was also unimpressed. Nanjiani described an awards show for scientists, where he and his costar Martin Starr presented during the peak of "Silicon Valley." The duo changed their onstage dialogue to replicate a particularly graphic comedy bit from the end of "Silicon Valley" season one. "[It was] for scientists who many of them don't speak English," Nanjiani said. "Almost none of them knew who we were or what the fuck we were talking about." The crowd was silent for the entire five minutes of the bit, Nanjiani said. He said that after leaving the stage, Zuckerberg approached him. "He came up and he was like, 'What the fuck was that?'" Nanjiani said. "Truly, in that moment, he was right." Nanjiani was more accepting of the Meta CEO's coolness. "I don't blame Zuckerberg for not liking us," he said.

Famous Books Main Characters Quiz — BuzzFeed Quizzes

Hey, fellow readers — welcome to class. Today, we're diving into the topic of protagonists. And yes, I know you probably remember this from English class — but just in case it's been a minute (it definitely has for me), here's a quick refresher: A protagonist is basically the main character of a story. It's the person the plot revolves around. Sometimes it gets a little tricky, like when the protagonist isn't the narrator. For example, in The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is telling the story, but the book centers around Jay Gatsby's life. That makes Jay Gatsby the protagonist. So, to make it simple, who is the story about? Who would you call the main character? The character that comes to mind is usually the protagonist. So, speaking of well do you actually know the books 'everyone' has read (or at least watched the movie version of)? Here's how this works: I'll give you the name of a main character, and you'll try to match them to their famous book. Sound good? Let's do this. How'd you do? Drop your score in the comments! And since we're talking about books 'everyone's read,' tell me: What's your hidden gem? That one book that you're distraught that not everyone has read? For me, it's The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. The poetic prose of this novel is breathtaking, and although it's a drama, it had me on the edge of my seat like a thriller. I've gifted it to almost everyone I know. I'm obsessed. So…what's your Paper Palace book? Tell me in the comments. I also can never shut up about Sylvia Plath. English Poet John Milton's ‘Paradise Lost' and 3 Great One-Liners

In my last article, I looked at three Shakespeare lines from various plays, explicating why they were so particularly powerful and expressive, but avoided what I would call his almost too well-known lines (for example, 'To be or not to be,' and so on). Here, I do the same for John Milton, though confining myself to one poem, 'Paradise Lost.' Why one poem? Because 'Paradise Lost' is the greatest epic written in the English language. Samuel Johnson, likely England's most distinguished man of letters, wrote in 'Lives of the Poets' that 'it is not the greatest of heroick poems, only because it is not the first.' He meant, of course, that Milton did not invent the epic form, Homer did, so first place must be given to Homer.
