Macron invites King Mohammed VI to French agriculture fair
French President Emmanuel Macron has extended an invitation to King Mohammed VI to attend the prestigious Salon de l'Agriculture in Paris, set for February 22 to March 2, 2025. Morocco has been designated as the guest of honor for this edition, mirroring France's role as the guest of honor at the upcoming Salon International de l'Agriculture de Meknès (SIAM), scheduled from April 21 to 27. According to Le Monde, the Moroccan monarch has yet to respond to this official invitation.
Should King Mohammed VI accept, this would mark his first visit to France since 2018, symbolizing a significant step towards strengthening ties between the two nations. This invitation follows France's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, announced during the 25th anniversary of the Throne Day. The recognition was part of a series of diplomatic gestures, including President Macron's state visit to Rabat from October 28 to 30, 2024.
During Macron's visit, the two countries signed 22 agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, notably agriculture. Additionally, King Mohammed VI and President Macron endorsed a «Partnership of Exceptional Strength», designed to tackle shared challenges effectively.
The upcoming Salon de l'Agriculture in Paris is expected to host a substantial Moroccan delegation. Le Monde reports that agricultural trade between the two nations has been flourishing, buoyed by increased French cereal exports and rising Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports. Organizers of SIAM 2025 have previously emphasized that selecting France as the guest of honor underscores «the excellent relations between the two countries».
Macron's invitation also coincides with tensions in the agricultural sector, as French farming organizations have initiated legal proceedings against what they term as «unfair competition» from Morocco. Earlier this year, the Conseil d'Etat dismissed the Confédération Paysanne's attempt to ban imports of cherry tomatoes and melons from the Charente region, labeled as originating from the Sahara.
The Court of Cassation ruled that «the prohibition measure requested by the association falls within the remit of the European authorities, and that the ministers responsible for the economy and agriculture could not legally prohibit» these imports into France.

King Mohammed VI, Trump to Announce Major Boeing Aircraft Purchase Deal

Reuters quoted industry sources as saying that Royal Air Maroc is close to securing a deal with Boeing for dozens of jets. Europe's Airbus, however, is also seeking to supply the Moroccan carrier with a small order for 20 A220 jets. 'The sources asked not to be named because the negotiations are not public,' Reuters reported , noting that talks have been ongoing for over a year to enable Royal Air Maroc to renew its virtually all-Boeing fleet. The company is expected to cling to its traditional supplier for its demands, including the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner. 'While the fleet plan reinforces the carrier's historic ties with Boeing, the sources said, it opens the door to Airbus for the first time in almost 25 years with an order for the A220,' the news outlet said. It also recalled that the potential order from Airbus comes as Morocco and France are boosting bilateral ties at all levels. These ties have been building rapidly ever since France's historic decision to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara in July of last year. Reuters' report came a few days after Bloomberg announced the same news, noting that Royal Air Maroc is in the final stages of a significant aircraft deal with Boeing, alongside a smaller agreement with Airbus. Bloomberg cited sources familiar with the matter, noting that the Boeing order could be delayed, potentially pending a high-level meeting between King Mohammed VI and US President Donald Trump. If confirmed, the high-level meeting could further upgrade the already strengthening ties between the US and Morocco, particularly as Washington has recently reaffirmed its steadfast support for Morocco's territorial integrity, especially over the southern provinces in Western Sahara. Earlier this month, Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh said in a parliamentary session on June 3 that Royal Air Maroc plans to acquire 10 more aircraft before the end of the year and another 10 in 2026. He said that the company also welcomed three Boeing 787 Dreamliners during the first week of June, on top of two new planes delivered earlier this year. In 2023, Royal Air Maroc announced that it is seeking to increase its fleet of commercial aircraft, boosting the number from 50 to 200 over the next 15 years. Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, highlighted on Monday in Geneva Morocco's 'authentic' experience in social dialogue, which has resulted in two major agreements totaling nearly $10 billion and benefiting over 12 million people. Delivering Morocco's keynote address to the plenary session of the 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), taking place from June 2 to 13, the official highlighted the relevance of the institutional framework Morocco has put in place and the parallel efforts to secure funding sources for social dialogue. In the first third of its mandate, he said, the government had focused on building a new institutional infrastructure for social dialogue, working closely with trade unions and employers. This stage "was not an easy one, as it was marked by serious and fierce discussions and negotiations," Sekkouri acknowledged. 'Once that framework was established, we turned our attention to tax reform and economic performance to ensure we had the means to fund this dialogue,' he added. 'It took us two years to reach two major social agreements, amounting to roughly $10 billion—a significant sum for our national budget. These agreements impact more than 12 million people across various programs under the social state, driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI,' the minister said. Sekkouri noted that the agreements led to wage increases, labor tax reform, and progress on a long-awaited strike law—a piece of legislation that had been stalled for nearly six decades. He also pointed out that the government is dedicating the final third of its mandate to deep structural reforms. The first of these is a major overhaul of the Labor Code, which includes addressing concerns raised in the ILO's recent report on decent work in platform-based jobs. The minister, who is leading Morocco's tripartite delegation at this year's ILC, is scheduled to take part in several high-level events, including one marking World Day Against Child Labour and another at the Global Coalition for Social Justice Forum. Bilateral meetings are also planned. The Moroccan delegation includes representatives from the Head of Government office , the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Morocco's Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, and social partners. Employers are represented by delegations from the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) and the Federation of Moroccan Chambers of Commerce and Services (FCMCIS).
