A16z eyes leading mega round in former OpenAI CTO's startup Thinking Machines, sources say

Reuters11-04-2025

SAN FRANCISCO, April 11 (Reuters) - Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz is in talks to lead an outsized early stage funding round of former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati's startup, according to four sources familiar with the matter.
The startup, named Thinking Machines Lab, could be valued at $10 billion in the round, sources said, making it one of the most valuable AI startups in the world, despite only launching in February. The company, which has no revenue or products yet, is the latest entrant into the crowded space of companies building generative AI models. Thinking Machines has said it wants to build artificial intelligence systems that are safer, more reliable and aimed at a broader number of applications than rivals.
Reuters couldn't learn how much Andreessen Horowitz is in talks to invest in this round. Business Insider reported earlier this week the final amount of the entire round could be close to $2 billion. Another VC heavyweight, Sequoia Capital, is also in talks to join the funding round, another source said.
Thinking Machines Lab declined to comment. Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The reception shows that investor enthusiasm toward new startups in AI remains extremely high, despite some questions about tech industry spending. An initial round of this size is not unprecedented: In September, former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever raised $1 billion, opens new tab based on his reputation in the field.
Andreessen Horowitz, known as A16z, has made big bets in AI, backing competitors to AI heavyweight OpenAI. It has participated in large funding rounds for AI model startups including Elon Musk's xAI, Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence and France-based Mistral. It is currently raising a $20 billion megafund dedicated to later-stage investments in AI companies. If successfully raised, it would be the largest fund in the firm's history.
Murati announced Thinking Machines Lab in February with a team of around 30 leading AI researchers and engineers, two-thirds of whom were former OpenAI employees, showing Murati's ability to poach her previous employer's top talent. Since then, other former prominent OpenAI employees have joined Thinking Machines as advisers, including OpenAI's former chief research officer, Bob McGrew, and the lead researcher for many of OpenAI's flagship AI models, Alec Radford.
At OpenAI, Murati spent over six years spearheading transformative projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E, and was a key figure in OpenAI's multibillion-dollar partnership with Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab, its largest financial backer. She frequently appeared alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as the public face of the ChatGPT maker.
Her abrupt resignation in September last year was part of a slew of high-profile exits from OpenAI, and she joined a growing list of former OpenAI executives launching rival startups, such as Dario Amodei's Anthropic and Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence.

PSG star Ousmane Dembele has more than just the Champions League trophy on the line after making luxury watch bet

OUSMANE DEMBELE could prove a double winner when PSG take on Inter Milan in the Champions League final. The French forward is hoping to make history with the Parisian giants this weekend. 2 PSG have never won the Champions League and are competing in just their second ever final. Dembele has been in superb form this season, bagging 33 goals across 48 games. The 28-year-old took on a bet with childhood friend Moustapha Diatta - a luxury watchmaker - before the season kicked off. French journalist Julien Laurens told the BBC's MOTD podcast: "Ousmane Dembele's best friend Moustapha owns a watch shop. "They made a bet at the start of the season that if Dembele scores 30 goals, he can go to the shop and choose whatever watch he wants as a gift. "For a long time that looked impossible. "He's never got to 30 goals in any season in his career." Dembele managed to achieve the feat with a remarkable effort in the second of the season, passing the milestone in March against Marseille. And he went "double or quits" with his good friend ahead of Saturday's showdown in Munich. Laurens continued: "Dembele is a player. "He went for doubles or quits. If PSG win in the Champions League final and he scores, he gets four watches, not two. "So Ousmane, it's your time." In a recent interview with The Athletic, Moustapha revealed the childhood friends met at the age of 5. And he was always convinced the former Barca winger would be a success. Moustapha told the outlet: "The days often revolved around football. "We'd have kickabouts with friends at the foot of our building or we'd challenge a team from another neighbourhood to a game. "Ousmane always had a ball with him. And he had a gift. He could already shoot with both feet and his dribbling was instinctive. "The results were pretty incredible."

Who will score first in tonight's Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan? Sky Bet odds revealed

Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele is a 5/1 favourite with Sky Bet to score first in tonight's Champions League final in Munich - as the Ligue 1 side look to secure their maiden European Cup with a win over Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan. Dembele has been in great form for PSG in Ligue 1 and the Champions League this season, with the striker netting 29 goals across the two competitions. Dembele has been in particularly good nick throughout the Champions League's knockout stages - with the French international registering five goal contributions in his last five games. Meanwhile, his teammates Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue are the next best-backed in the market - with the pair both priced at 6/1 to bag the opener. Barcola and Doue have combined to record 67 goal contributions across all competitions to date this season. Lastly, if you're anticipating Inter Milan to get on the scoresheet first - Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram are the shortest-priced players for Inter Milan to score first at 7/1 and 15/2 respectively. Martinez has scored nine goals in 13 UCL appearances this season - of which includes the opening goal in Inter Milan's 4-3 win over Barcelona in the second leg of their semi-final. Additionally, Thuram found the back of the net in the first minute of the first leg of Inter Milan's semi-final against Barcelona. Sky Bet favourites in first goalscorer market for Paris Saint-Germain vs Inter Milan: Ousmane Dembele 5/1 Bradley Barcola 6/1 Desire Doue 6/1 Lautaro Martinez 7/1 Marcus Thuram 15/2

Man City 'make Rayan Cherki swoop a priority and will submit bid next week' as they look to stave off interest in bargain forward from Premier League rivals

Manchester City have made their swoop for Rayan Cherki a priority and will submit a bid next week as they look to fend off rival Premier League interest, reports claim. Cherki, 21, confirmed he will leave Lyon this summer and a host of clubs are eyeing up a move, believing he has a release clause in his contract worth around £20million. City initially mounted a charge to sign Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz before ruling out a move, citing the exorbitant amount of money needed to seal the deal, but Pep Guardiola has now turned his attention to the talented Cherki. After catching the eye during his final campaign in France, and scoring 12 goals across all competitions, Cherki was reportedly shortlisted by the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham - but City have looked to steal a march. According to L'Equipe, Cherki is now City's No 1 target and a bid is imminent. Reports in France prematurely claimed France international Cherki had already reached an agreement with City, but this is believed to be wide of the mark. Guardiola has not yet spoken with Cherki but has already been in contact with people familiar with the forward, including former Lyon boss Pierre Sage. City are keen to wrap up the signing before the Club World Cup, which begins on June 15 in the United States, and will follow up their interest with an official offer. The club will rebuild their squad during the summer window. Kevin De Bruyne will leave on a free transfer, and looks bound for Napoli, while Jack Grealish's future is uncertain after he was left out of the squad for the final day victory over Fulham. Cherki, an attacking midfielder and winger by trade, joined Lyon in 2010 and spent nine years in their academy before making his senior debut in 2019, aged just 16. However, Lyon have been dogged by crippling financial issues and were slapped with a transfer ban and provisional relegation to Ligue 2 in January with debts of £424m. Cherki has made 185 appearances for Lyon, scoring 29 goals. As reported by Mail Sport, City are eyeing up a £55m deal for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and hold interest in Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White. Meanwhile, Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp's former assistant at Liverpool, has agreed to join Guardiola's coaching staff and will start work ahead of the Club World Cup.
