Police detain 14 in crackdown on ketum trade across three states

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained 14 men in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang as part of coordinated operations targeting the illegal production and distribution of ketum leaves and water.
Twelve suspects were arrested in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur following two raids on April 24 and May 6, conducted by the General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade as part of 'Op Taring Mitra'.
In a statement today, Central Brigade commander SAC Hakemal Hawari confirmed that authorities seized ketum leaves, processed ketum water, equipment for processing and several vehicles, with a total estimated value of RM657,400.
In a separate raid in Penang, two 23-year-old men were arrested today at a house in Batu Maung, where police recovered 85 kilograms of ketum leaves and 1,500 packets of ketum water worth RM9,300.
According to Barat Daya police chief ACP Sazalee Adam, the suspects had been renting the property for six months to produce and sell the ketum water at RM5 per packet.
Both suspects are being remanded and the case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, he said.

"Checks found 150 plant hormone products and 400 rubber latex stimulant chemicals suspected to be unregistered with the Agriculture Department. "Initial investigations found the products were collected from a shop in Kaki Bukit for delivery to Selangor," he said in a statement today. He said the total value of the seizure, including the van, was estimated at RM90,200. The suspect was arrested over offences under the Pesticides Act.

PADANG BESAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) has arrested a man and seized unregistered chemical products worth RM90,200 during Ops Taring on Monday (Aug 18). GOF Northern Brigade Commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said the 27-year-old local was arrested at a border roadblock near KM27 Padang Besar at about 2 pm. "During the operation, a suspicious van was stopped at the roadblock," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 19). SAC Shahrum said checks found the van driven by the suspect contained chemical products believed to be unregistered with the Agriculture Department. Among the seized items were 150 products containing plant hormone chemicals, 400 products containing latex-stimulating chemicals, and the van itself. He said the suspect committed an offence under the Pesticides Act 1974 for possessing products with unregistered chemical substances. The Northern Brigade of the GOF is intensifying monitoring and inspections at border roadblocks in Perak, Kedah, and Perlis to curb illegal activities. "The brigade reaffirms its commitment to consistent enforcement and will not compromise in upholding the law," he said. He added that the public is urged to act as the "eyes and ears" of the authorities by providing information on unlawful activities.

(PGA pic) PETALING JAYA : The General Operations Forces have seized 33,000kg of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand into Kelantan yesterday. GOF's Southeast Brigade commander Nik Ros Azhan Ab Rahman said a trailer carrying 660 sacks of rice was stopped in front of a school near Jeli, Kelantan, at 12.45am during Op Taring Bravo 4, Harian Metro reported. 'The seized goods have been handed over to the Kelantan branch of the National Rice Regulatory Division for further action. The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 (for unlawful possession of padi orrice),' he was quoted as saying. In a separate raid on Wednesday, GOF's Battalion 8 seized 20 boxes of Diamond Gold facial soap worth RM360,000 from a car at the Lan Bundle illegal jetty in Rantau Panjang during Op Taring Wawasan. Nik Ros said the 18-year-old driver was suspected of delivering the products to the local market. The case is being investigated under Section 7(1)(E) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
