England add Jofra Archer to squad ahead of second Test against India

Glasgow Times4 hours ago

The 30-year-old pace bowler, who has not played Test cricket since February 2021, returns to the England set-up in the only change to Ben Stokes' squad that secured a thrilling five-wicket win in the series opener at Headingley.
Archer's Test career has been derailed by a string of injuries.
He played his first red-ball match since May 2021 this week, marking his return with a wicket in Sussex's County Championship draw against Durham in Chester-le-Street.
With the start of the 2025-26 Ashes series less than five months away, former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Archer needs to play at international level this summer but advised waiting until at least the third Test at Lord's.
'I hope England aren't too funky in terms of just swapping and changing for changing's sake; I like seeing teams play over a period,' Vaughan told the PA news agency.
'Yes, you want to see Jofra throughout the summer, that's not a debate. We need to see Jofra play a Test match or two but on the back of just one innings and one four-day game in four years, I just don't see the rush.
'Let him play for Sussex for one more week and then potentially pencil him in for the Test match at Lord's.'

Archer burst on to the international scene in 2019, bowling the decisive super-over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's and taking 22 wickets at 20.27 in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series.
But an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 and that required four operations curtailed Archer's progress and he then had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, which he first sustained in 2022.
He returned to action for England in their ODI series against Bangladesh in March 2023, but was then sidelined by elbow issues and did not play international cricket until May 2024.
Archer was ruled out of England's ODI series against the West Indies last month with a thumb injury sustained playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.
'We don't quite know how his body's going to stand up,' continued Vaughan.
'All the talk is that his body's good. But let's not be too harsh on him in terms of building him up so much, because he hasn't played.
'At times he looked short of a gallop in the Champions Trophy, then he had spells in the IPL that were very good but that's just four overs.
'I mean, England need him. You look at a barrage of a quick bowlers that you want to arrive in Australia with, England will want him in that that squad.
'But I wouldn't want to rush him too soon to then take him back a step or two.'
Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad.
The second Test in a five-match series starts next Wednesday, with the following Tests at Lord's (July 10-14), Old Trafford (July 23-27) and the Oval (July 31-August 4).
England men's Test Squad: Ben Stokes (Durham), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

However, it is understood the 22-year-old's representatives have had contact with Lille chiefs and held talks over personal terms. French outlet Foot Mercato is now reporting Igamane is "very excited" about the prospect of the move, which could fetch Rangers over £10 million. They could team him up with World Cup winner Olivier Giroud as they look to both strikers to replace Canada star Jonathan David. Rangers signed Igamane for £1.7m from AS Far Rabat in his homeland and could be about to earn a significant mark-up after just a year.

The carpenter with an edge out to put himself in Welsh rugby's shop window

The carpenter with an edge out to put himself in Welsh rugby's shop window The World Rugby U20 Championship is a shop window for players looking for contracts Wales U20s scrum-half Ellis Lewis in action for Neath The World Rugby U20 Championship will not only showcase international stars of the future but will also provide an opportunity for players to put themselves in the shop window in the hope of earning a professional contract. One player who is in this boat is Wales U20s scrum-half Ellis Lewis, who is one of only three uncapped players in Richard Whiffin's squad. The 19-year-old, who works as a carpenter for Swansea Council, was released by the Ospreys academy and has been playing his rugby for Neath in the Welsh Premiership. ‌ Lewis is hoping to use Wales' U20s World Cup campaign to put himself in the shop window for a professional contract. ‌ "I used to be with Ospreys but after U18s I unfortunately didn't get a contract so that's when I got a job with Swansea Council doing an apprenticeship in carpentry," he told WalesOnline. "I've been playing in the Premiership for Neath this season but I've signed for Swansea in the SRC. "The dream is to get a professional contract but we will see how it goes. "It was a tough time when I got released by the Ospreys but my family helped me get through it. "I've used it as motivation and I've worked hard to get back into the Wales U20s squad after missing out on the Six Nations squad. ‌ "Hopefully I can impress and get my name out there during the World Cup and get on the market. "I want to pick up a contract somewhere and become a pro." If Lewis makes it to the top he will certainly have done it the hard way. ‌ Unlike the majority of the squad, the former Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera pupil has been playing his rugby for Neath RFC rather than Super Rygbi Cymru. He models his game on hard work and being an absolute nuisance to play against. "I'm more of an aggressive nine who likes the physical contact side of things," he said. "I've also got a good kicking game but my point of difference is the contact side of the game. ‌ "Growing up I used to look up to Rhys Webb and Faf de Klerk. "I've taken aspects of their game into mine and I've also taken some inspiration from Mike Phillips who was a lot bigger than other scrum-halves. I want to get on top of players all the time and just be in their faces while also making tackles. ‌ "Playing in the Welsh Premiership for Neath has definitely helped my development because it is different. "In the Prem you can get away with a lot more and it's a bit rougher. It's a different type of game but it's still good. "The Premiership is a really tough league and very aggressive whereas the SRC is still physical but it's more of an open, less structured game." ‌ Lewis will be fortunate this summer to play behind the strongest Wales U20s pack in years with the likes of Harry Thomas, Sam Scott, Ioan Emanuel, Luke Evans and Nick Thomas, among others, all front-five forwards with the size and power to make a mark. "We have a big physical pack," he said. "They are good and I'm confident they can get us onto the front foot. Article continues below "It's easier when you play on the front foot as a nine because you get better ball so hopefully we can play some good rugby. "We want to make the top four and if our forwards can give us a platform hopefully we can get the back line moving."
