EFL star quits football aged 31 to begin new life in real estate in Dubai
A former EFL footballer who became the first player to make his professional debut in a cup final held at Wembley has swapped a 15-year career in the sport for real estate
George Ray has swapped the football pitch for flipping houses as he leaves behind a 15-year playing career in England for a real estate journey in Dubai. The former Crewe Alexandra star, who debuted during the Football League Trophy final in 2013, has announced his departure from the sport on social media in a heartwarming post.
The 31-year-old came from the Alexandra academy and began his career in the EFL as a defender. He played for Tranmere Rovers, Exeter City, Leyton Orient, and Barrow, winning one trophy and appearing in two cup finals during his career.
Ray became the first player to make his professional debut in a cup final held at Wembley as Alexandra beat Southend United 2-0, meaning he won a trophy the minute he began playing.
Now, the ex-defender is venturing into new pastures, as he announced his work will begin with Haus and Haus, which is based in Dubai.
Writing on Instagram, Ray said: "After 15 unforgettable years of playing professional football, it's time for a massive change! I will be swapping boots for suits as I move to Dubai to start a new career in real estate with @hausandhaus.
"The transition has been exciting, and I've spent countless hours over the past 12 months researching, learning, and immersing myself in the industry to ensure I'm in the best position to succeed.
"I'm committed to delivering the same level of dedication, commitment and passion I brought to football.
"Now for a few holidays and to enjoy the summer with family and friends before starting my new role on August 1st.
"If you're considering buying, selling, or investing in Dubai, feel free to send me a message. I'd be happy to discuss how I can assist you in moving forward."
Ray made a total of 324 career appearances in football, scoring 13 goals from a centre-half position between the years of 2013 and 2025.
Many former teammates have celebrated his new career venture, including Barnet striker Dom Telford, who spent time with Ray at Barrow last season. Telford wrote: "Love it stinger, enjoy mate."
Fellow Alexandra academy graduate Billy Waters also added: "Swaaaa mean. All the best Georgey boy."

Dustin Johnson given steamy going-away gift by Paulina Gretzky ahead of US Open
Dustin Johnson and his wife, Paulina Gretzky, are used to turning heads and ahead of his US Open bid at Oakmont this week, they've done so again Dustin Johnson, the 2016 US Open champion, received a rather saucy send-off from his partner, Paulina Gretzky, as he prepared for year's tournament. The golfing star, who won the 2016 tournament, was given a bit of extra motivation by Gretzky ahead of his attempt to add another prestigious title to his collection. The 40-year-ol d LIV golf star is returning this week to the course at Oakmont which he has described as the "hardest" he's ever played. But he's once more among the favourites to be in contention for top honours. Before his departure for the next Major, Gretzky shared a series of photos featuring herself and Johnson in various poses. DJ is seen sporting a white blazer and trousers combo sans shirt, while Gretzky dons a revealing outfit. The post is simply captioned "nobody else." Fans on social media had their share of jokes on the decision to post the carousel, however. One fan wrote: "Clearly DJ is zoned in on the U.S. Open this week. Grinding like never before," with another adding: "DJ about to post a +15 and be home by Friday evening." Other fans noted how the couple looked, with some criticising - in jest - Johnson's decision not to wear an undershirt with his white blazer. By and large, fans were excited to either see Johnson play at Oakmont or were happy for the couple for their Instagram post. Johnson's recent major performances have been underwhelming, with only one top-10 finish since 2023 and two missed cuts this year, including a disappointing start to the Masters. Despite this, Johnson expressed confidence that his game is nearing its best form at a crucial moment. "I feel like my game's been really close," he said. "I haven't really got a lot out of it." He added: "It was definitely nice to have a nice finish last week," Johnson said. "I played good every day. I didn't - you know, still kind of giving away some shots. I need to clean that up a little bit. But played really solid every day, hit it nice, gave myself a lot of opportunities. "Just still kind of gave some shots away each round that you can't afford to do at a golf course like this." The LIV star also shared that Oakmont was the most difficult course he's played. "Good memories here," he continued. "Obviously it was a long time ago. I have confidence in this golf course because I know I played well, but obviously this week puts a lot of pressure on the driver. I feel like I'm driving the ball really good right now. "Even from there, though, it doesn't get much easier. You definitely have to hit it in the fairway if you want a chance to win around here. ... It's hard to compare. I've played some hard courses, but it all depends on the conditions. "This one's hard no matter what - soft, firm, windy, no wind."

Russell Martin pops out for vegan scran at popular Glasgow restaurant as Rangers boss shows his true colours
New Rangers manager Russell Martin was spotted at a popular restaurant in Glasgow's west end Rangers manager Russell Martin was spotted at a popular restaurant in Glasgow's west end as he resettles back into life in the city. Caffè Parma, located in Hyndland Road, took to social media to post a snap of the former defender turned manager basking in the sun as he posed alongside the eatery's manager, Stefano. Staff were delighted, with a post on Instagram reading: "Guess who popped by to soak up some sunshine and enjoy a few tasty nibbles on our terrace? None other than the new Rangers FC manager Russell Martin," alongside a blue heart and football emoji. Excited Rangers fans were quick to comment on the post, which was posted to several of the restaurant's social media accounts, voicing their joy over seeing the club's new manager enjoying his time back in Glasgow. Russell is no stranger to Glasgow, having spent six months on loan to Rangers back in 2018. One fan wrote: "Great stuff, nice pic Stefano!" with another saying: "Great photo." While a third said: "Love it," alongside red, white and blue heart emojis. As a fourth simply commented multiple blue heart emojis. Russell, who hails from Brighton, recently took on Rangers' top role, signing a contract for a three-year deal. He previously had a short stint as a Gers player in 2018 while on loan from Norwich City. In a club video, Russell expressed his joy for being back in Glasgow, saying: "It's been a long, long few weeks, it's been interesting, but it's been good. It's brilliant to be back. I love the city and I love the people." Despite being born in England and growing up in Brighton, Russell has 29 caps for Scotland's national team after qualifying to play for Scotland FC through his Scottish father, Dean. He made 29 international appearances in total and played under the management of Gordon Strachan. His life outside of football is far from common for a football manager as Russell is a member of the Green Party, a vegan and he's also a student in Buddhism. The new manager became vegan over a decade ago, in 2014, after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He said: "I did some research into diet and what could help (the condition). But then when you become involved in that it raises your awareness of the ethical side. You actually look at it and think: 'This makes sense'." Russell recently started dating former glamour model Lucy Pinder, who was once ranked by FHM among the '100 Sexiest Women in the World'. The couple got together in August 2024 after Russell split from ex-wife Jasmine Martin, who he shares three children with.

Rodrygo offers Arsenal transfer clue with pointed one-word message over future
Arsenal are interested in signing Real Madrid winger Rodrygo but any deal would require the Brazilian to actively push for a move away from the Bernabeu Rodrygo has moved to clarify that he is happy at Real Madrid despite ongoing transfer links to Arsenal. The Brazil international attacker, who is set to feature for Los Blancos at the Club World Cup in the United States, is on the Gunners' summer shortlist as sporting director Andrea Berta seeks to recruit a new wide player for Mikel Arteta. However, any deal would require the 24-year-old to actively push for a transfer and tell newly-appointed boss Xabi Alonso that he wants to leave the Spanish giants. Arsenal are currently prioritising the signing of a new centre-forward with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko top of their agenda. Early talks with their German counterparts and Sesko's representatives have already taken place and there is expected to be progress between the parties in the coming weeks. However, it appears Rodrygo has now sent a pointed message over his future via an Instagram post which he captioned: "Happy," accompanied by a smiley and white love heart emoji. The image posted displayed Rodrygo in Real Madrid training. READ MORE: Arsenal get green light for Benjamin Sesko transfer as forward stands ground over £60m move There has been a lot of noise surrounding the explosive forward in recent weeks but it appears he has now attempted to set the record straight over his future with a simple message to Real Madrid supporters. He was always due to feature at the Club World Cup - the tournament is viewed as an extension to the 2024-25 season - but the chances of him leaving Real Madrid before the start of the 2025-26 campaign are also looking incredibly slim. Rodrygo is however, expected to tell Alonso that ideally, he wants to feature from the left-wing next term and that could prove complex as Vinicius Jr has locked down the left flank at the Bernabeu and made the role his own since breaking into the starting XI. But Alonso is tactically flexible and according to Madrid-based media, is thought to value Rodrgyo's qualities highly as the Spaniard looks to put his own stamp on the star-studded squad he has inherited from Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso needed no hesitation to clarify that he was planning to keep the attacker during his Real Madrid unveiling, stating: "Rodrygo? He is a Real Madrid player. He is a spectacular player and we will need him." The Brazil international mustered six goals and five assists in 20 La Liga appearances last season and the capture of 17-year-old Argentine wonderkid Franco Mastantuono is not expected to have any bearing on Rodrigo's future. Arsenal do also have other wingers on their radar including the likes of Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, a player of long-term interest, and Newcastle's Anthony Gordon.
