Delhi-Dehradun Expressway delayed again: Public awaits clarity from NHAI on Phase 4 opening since March 2025

Time of India14-05-2025
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway delayed again: The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is a big road project. It aims to cut travel time from over six hours to about 2.5 hours. But the project has faced many delays. People are now waiting for clear answers on when it will fully open. Phase 1 is already finished. It covers a 32-km stretch from Akshardham to Baghpat. It was completed on March 2025 itself. But other phases 2.3 & 4 has not officially completed and opened yet. Commuters are still facing problems due to the delay.
Dear @NHAI_Official It's been a while there is NO clarity or update on the Delhi-Dehradun expressway. Phase-1 was completed last year itself, when do you plan to get it operational for public?I'm sure you understand there has been suffering for commuters for 2+ years now.
There has been no clear update from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Devendra Pratap Singh, an X user, shared his frustration via post. He said people have been suffering for more than two years. Anand Sankar, another X user, also post about the delays. He said the project keeps missing deadlines. Many people feel the same and are growing impatient.
Our Delhi Dehradun expressway also keeps missing deadlines.
The main reason for the delay is a legal issue. A land dispute in Mandola, Ghaziabad, is still in court. The Supreme Court and High Court had planned to hold hearings in April 2025 already. However, there still isn't any clear update about its opening.
Some parts of the expressway are ready. Phase 1 and a 3.4-km section in Dehradun are already in use. But the full 210-km road is not yet open. The expressway includes modern features like a 12-km elevated wildlife corridor over Rajaji National Park. People are hoping the full expressway will open soon.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Project overview and current status
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is a six-lane (expandable to eight lanes) controlled-access highway connecting Delhi to Dehradun via Uttar Pradesh. This expressway passes through key towns such as Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway project, costing over ₹12,000 crore, is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana. It includes several engineering marvels such as 113 underpasses, five railway overbridges, and a 12-km elevated corridor to protect wildlife in Rajaji National Park.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway construction is divided into four phases:
Phase 1: Akshardham (Delhi) to Khekra (Baghpat) – Completed and partially operational
Phase 2: Eastern Peripheral Expressway to Saharanpur – Nearing completion
Phase 3: Saharanpur to Ganeshpur (Uttarakhand border) – Advanced stages
Phase 4: Ganeshpur to Dehradun – Final stretch with longest wildlife corridor, delayed due to legal issues.
What about Delhi - Dehradun expressway ??
Partial openings have eased traffic on some stretches. Phase 4 is yet to open. Once it does, travel time will drop sharply. It will also improve regional connectivity. Economic growth will get a strong boost.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Legal proceedings impacting the Opening
The expressway's delay is due to a land ownership dispute. It involves a property in Mandola, Ghaziabad. This issue has stalled the final clearance. Without it, full operation can't begin. The Supreme Court had set hearings for mid-April 2025. But now, the High Court's verdict which was expected on April 29, 2025 is set to clear things.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Regional benefits
Besides cutting travel time, the expressway has Asia's longest elevated wildlife corridor. It runs over Rajaji National Park. It helps protect animal migration routes. This will help protect both local communities and ecosystems.

PM Modi to inaugurate 6-lane Aunta-Simaria Ganga bridge in Bihar on Friday

Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Bihar's six-lane Aunta-Simaria bridge over the river Ganga, connecting Mokama in Patna district and Begusarai, on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and construction of the six-lane Ganga Setu on October 14, 2017. Modi will be flying to Simaria in Begusarai to inaugurate the bridge, a senior official familiar with the development said. 'The PM is likely to halt for around 30 minutes at Simaria and will walk on the newly constructed bridge,' he added. Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and construction of the six-lane bridge on October 14, 2017. Built at a cost of ₹1,900 crore, the bridge on NH-31 is 8.16 km long (including approach roads), with a 1.865 km stretch over the Ganga river to connect north and south Bihar for smooth connectivity and to reduce the load on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) deputy general manager (media) Praveen Tyagi said, adding the bridge is 34 metres wide. The Aunta-Simaria bridge, constructed parallel to the two-lane rail-cum-road bridge Rajendra Setu, which is currently under repair, will reduce the travel distance for heavy vehicles by 100 km between regions of north Bihar (Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani, Araria, etc.) and south Bihar (Patna, Sheikhpura, Nawada, Lakhisarai, etc.), apart from saving operating costs and fuel. The bridge will also provide an easy link to Simaria Dham, where thousands of pilgrims visit the Kalpavas Mela held every year. 'Bihar government is also working on developing Simaria/Simaria Dham as a hub for cultural tourism,' an official said. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said, 'This bridge will reduce the distance between north and south Bihar through this signature project. It is a reminder to the people how far Bihar has travelled from the lantern age when there were craters in the name of roads. The PM sees Bihar as the next growth engine and all his efforts are aimed at preparing a strong launch pad.' Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said, 'Bihar is witnessing all-round development, thanks to the PM and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's initiatives, and it will only pick up momentum as the state strives to become economically strong with robust infrastructure.' During his visit to Gaya in Bihar, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth around ₹13,000 crore and flag off two trains. He will inaugurate the four-lane Bakhtiyarpur to Mokama section of NH-31 worth around ₹1,900 crore, the Buxar Thermal Power Plant worth ₹6,880 crore, and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre at Muzaffarpur. The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in Muzaffarpur, which includes an advanced oncology outpatient department (OPD), in-patient department (IPD) wards, operation theatres, modern laboratory, blood bank, and a 24-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU), will provide advanced and affordable cancer treatment to patients in Bihar and neighbouring states, reducing the need to travel for treatment. Aiming to reduce pollution in the Ganga and improve sanitation facilities in keeping with the vision of Swachh Bharat, Modi will inaugurate the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) and Sewerage Network at Munger, constructed under Namami Gange, worth over ₹520 crore. He will also lay the foundation stone for a series of urban infrastructure projects worth around ₹1,260 crore, including STPs and sewerage networks at Daudnagar in Aurangabad and Jehanabad; STP, interception, and diversion works at Barahiya in Lakhisarai, and Jamui. Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0), he will lay the foundation stone for water supply projects at Aurangabad, Bodhgaya, and Jehanabad, in a bid to provide clean drinking water, modern sewerage systems, and improved sanitation. Boosting rail connectivity in the region, the PM will flag off two trains — Amrit Bharat Express between Gaya and Delhi and Buddhist Circuit Train between Vaishali and Koderma. He will also hand over keys to some of the 12,000 rural beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY)-Gramin and 4,260 beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban.

FASTag Annual Pass Update: 200 highway trips for just INR 3,000: Everything you want to know about the yearly pass

FASTag is one of the best things that has been introduced for travellers. It is one thing that has solved a lot of issues, including toll booth traffic and making life easier for highway travellers. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), to make highways more affordable and convenient, launched an annual pass on 15 August 2025. The FASTag Annual Pass is a prepaid facility allowing private vehicle owners to take 200 toll-free trips across national highways and expressways for a fee of INR 3,000. The pass is valid for one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. Let's have a look at some of the prime factors of FASTag Annual Pass: Eligibility The annual pass is only for private, non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses, trucks can't use this. The pass is connected directly to the FASTag account and vehicle registration number (VRN) of the user. So it is also non-transferable. What happens if it is misused If a tag is found misused or linked only with a chassis number, it will be deactivated immediately. It is crucial to note that the pass applies only on NHAI and MoRTH-managed toll plazas. State highways, private toll roads, and parking facilities will continue to charge tolls through the standard pay-per-use FASTag system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo How to buy and activate (Rajmarg Yatra app) Log in to the Rajmarg Yatra app or visit the NHAI official website. Choose the annual pass option Confirm vehicle details Pay INR 3,000 through UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking Note: Wallet balances are not accepted If the vehicle's FASTag is already active and linked to a registration number, it's a quick activation. In most cases, the pass activates within two hours. It can take up to 24 hours in rare situations. Once active, users receive a confirmation SMS. Understanding 200 trips concept Every crossing at a toll plaza is counted as one trip. So, for open toll systems, every time you pass through a plaza, one trip is deducted. On closed toll roads such as certain expressways, the entire journey—from entry to exit—is treated as a single trip. The pass remains valid until either 200 trips are used or one year has passed. After that, the FASTag automatically switches back to the regular mode. How is it a money saver deal So understand this: Your one-way toll on national highways might cost between INR 70 to INR 100. In one year, you might end up paying INR 10,000–15,000 on tolls. But with the annual pass, the effective cost per crossing comes down to just INR 15– INR 20. For those who frequently commute between cities—say, from Mumbai to Surat, Delhi to Jaipur, or Bengaluru to Hyderabad—the savings can add up to INR 7,000 or more per year. This is absolutely the thing passengers wanted. With the introduction of the FASTag Annual Pass, the government aims to make highway travel smoother, cashless, and more affordable for millions of private vehicle owners.
