Key step in democratising AI: IIT-B releases 16 datasets on AIKOSH

In an important milestone for India's Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has released 16 diverse and culturally significant datasets on AIKOSH, India's official AI repository, making it among the biggest contributors to AIKOSH. This marks a crucial step in democratising AI by making high-quality, India-centric data openly accessible to researchers, startups and developers across the country.
IIT Bombay made the announcement on X, saying that these datasets are designed to support innovation and research in AI and Machine Learning (ML), particularly in the Indian context.

AIKOSH, which was launched in March by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is a national platform aimed at providing support for inclusive AI development across the country.
The 16 datasets by IIT Bombay are part of a larger pool of 21 AI models now available on AIKOSH, which were created by BharatGen, a Section 8 company funded by the Department of Science and Technology for indigenous AI development in India. The company is a consortium of seven partners. Led by IIT Bombay, the consortium includes IIT Kanpur, IIT Mandi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIM Indore and IIIT Hyderabad.
Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan, Department of Computer Science Engineering, IIT Bombay, said, 'Our goal is not just to build AI models but to provide resources that startups and system integrators can leverage, creating a favourable and sovereign AI ecosystem for India.'
The datasets released on AIKOSH include handwritten and printed Indian scripts, multilingual audio data and resources designed to interpret visual and spoken inputs from Indian environments. Among the notable contributions are a large-scale Sanskrit Optical Character Recognition (OCR) dataset consisting of over 218,000 sentences from historical texts to support the digitisation of ancient Indian knowledge. There is also a speech recognition dataset with more than 78 hours of Sanskrit audio. Additional resources include capabilities for detecting tables across documents in 14 Indian languages and a comprehensive Wiki on Indian Knowledge Systems, among others.
Prof Ramakrishnan said, 'Equal emphasis on India data and its provenance allows these models to uniquely balance Indian data alongside English data, ensuring true relevance and understanding for our diverse nation, while also catering to its security. These models are built with Indian linguistic and cultural nuances at their core. By making these datasets available to all thorough AIKOSH, we are democratising AI in order to foster innovations across the country, eventually to build a self-reliant and inclusive AI ecosystem for India.'

Venkatraman 'Venki' Ramakrishnan Venki Ramakrishnan won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for uncovering the structure of ribosomes, a critical component of the cell. His academic path began in India with a bachelor's degree in physics from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Driven by a deep interest in the structure of matter, he moved to the United States and earned a PhD in physics from Ohio University. He later shifted to molecular biology during his postdoctoral work at Yale University. Renu Malhotra Renu Malhotra is a planetary scientist whose research played a major role in the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet. She started her education in India, earning a bachelor's degree in physics from IIT Kanpur. She later pursued a PhD in physics from Cornell University in the US, where she entered the field of planetary dynamics. Her work reshaped how astronomers understand planetary motion, and she remains a leading voice in space science and astronomy. Sanjay Mehrotra Sanjay Mehrotra, the CEO of Micron Technology and co-founder of SanDisk, has been a major figure in semiconductor innovation, particularly in flash memory. US President Donald Trump's family-run business, The Trump Organization, has treated India as its most significant market outside the US over the past decade. According to a report by The Indian Express, the company has earned at least ₹175 crore through partnerships with top Indian developers across seven projects in Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, and Gurugram. Instead, it licenses the Trump brand for luxury real estate developments, collecting branding and development fees upfront, typically earning 3–5% of eventual sales. This asset-light approach has made India the organization's most profitable international market. 'The Trump Organization's earnings from these are yet to be disclosed, but experts said, its partnerships with the biggest builders, not only allows the Trump enterprise to tap into the most lucrative markets in the world's fastest growing economy, but also brings it continuous revenue stream with no financial risk,' the Indian Express report said. Between 2012 and 2019 alone, The Trump Organization earned $11.3 million in royalties and fees from four branded projects in Pune, Mumbai, Gurugram, and Kolkata, the Indian Express report said. By 2024, that figure had jumped. Trump's own financial disclosures show $12 million in new earnings from India, $10 million of which reportedly came from the Mumbai project. Another $2.2 million came from license and royalty fees paid by developers, the report said. 'Over the last eight months, Brand Trump has been on an aggressive expansion drive in India. Soon after his election as the 47th President of the United States of America on November 5, 2024, The Trump Organization, along with its Indian partner Tribeca Developers, announced at least six projects in Gurugram, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Noida and Bengaluru, adding up to 8 million sq feet of realty development," the IE report said. From the first project announced in India in 2012, Brand Trump's footprint is set to see, by the time these projects are complete, a near four-fold expansion to 11 million square feet, a sharp jump from approximately 3 million sq ft developed until last year, the report noted. The Trump Organisation's footprint in India Of the total planned projects, three spanning approximately 4.3 million sq ft, or over half of Brand Trump's targeted footprint have already been launched this year in Pune, Gurugram, and Hyderabad. The Pune project, announced in March, marks the brand's first commercial development in the city. The properties are typically billed as luxury developments, with flats commanding a premium due to the President's name being attached to them, said the IE report. The Trump Organization, headquartered in NYC, is a family-controlled conglomerate and functions as the main holding company for Donald J. Trump's various business ventures through numerous subsidiaries spanning various industries, including real estate and hospitality. Founded and majority-held by Donald J. Trump, the organisation has his sons Donald J. Trump Jr. and Eric Trump as executive vice-presidents.
