Azalina calls for new law to hold companies accountable
KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider introducing a new law to hold companies liable for serious safety failures that result in loss of life, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She cited the United Kingdom's Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 as a possible model for Malaysia, noting that it was introduced following a series of fatal workplace incidents where corporations escaped criminal liability.
'The UK introduced this law in response to several fatal workplace incidents where no corporation could be held accountable, particularly in the transport sector, despite the fact that such negligence cost human lives which are invaluable,' she said in a Facebook post.
Azalina also backed Transport Minister Anthony Loke's call for firm action following Monday's tragic bus crash in Gerik that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
She urged the government to review the effectiveness of current enforcement measures and consider amendments to the Penal Code to strengthen accountability for corporate negligence.
Yesterday, Loke said the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) had issued a show-cause letter to the bus operator involved in the crash at KM53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik.
He said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is also conducting safety audits and inspections of the company and the bus involved, under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Land Public Transport Act.
'Firm action will be taken once investigations are complete. Every life lost is not only a tragedy for the family, but a loss for the nation's future,' Loke said in his own Facebook statement.

KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant in his 30s lost RM13,000 in savings after falling victim to a scam by imposters posing as officials. The victim reportedly received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and later, a policeman, accusing him of spreading fake news on investments, job offers, and gambling. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the victim allegedly received the calls on May 27, initially from someone claiming to be an MCMC officer. "The caller claimed that his phone number was involved in the dissemination of fake messages. The call was then allegedly reconnected to another individual claiming to be a policeman from the Perak Police Headquarters," he said. After lengthy conversations and instilling fear, the victim was ordered to transfer RM13,000 to a bank account belonging to one Muhammad Azlan for 'account protection,' he explained. Supt Mursalin said the victim was also instructed to update photos and personal details every three hours to the 'cop' as a form of reporting himself to the police. "Later, the victim realised that he had been cheated and lodged a report at the Ranau Police Station on Tuesday (June 10) night," he said. The case is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Supt Mursalin urged the public to remain calm and think rationally when receiving calls from unknown numbers to avoid being scammed. He emphasised the importance of staying composed when speaking to supposed authorities and enforcement agencies via phone calls to protect oneself from becoming victims of cheating syndicates. He also warned against revealing any personal, banking, or identification information over the phone, and advised against carrying out monetary transactions online or via telephone. "Always call back the police station or agencies allegedly involved on their official land-lines to verify any calls or matters," stressed Supt Mursalin.

Gerik crash: Permit holder of the bus breached rules, rented out licence, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has revealed that the permit holder of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, had breached multiple conditions — including leasing the permit to a third party. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the permit holder, who is based in Kedah, had rented out the permit to an individual in Kelantan for RM500 a month. He added that the permit holder had also failed to submit GPS data when requested, as the vehicle's tracking system was found to be inactive.

Police to record bus owner's statement over fatal UPSI crash
IPOH: Police will record the statement of the owner of the bus that was carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students involved in the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 students. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus owner is expected to come to the Gerik district police headquarters tomorrow to have his statement recorded. "Yesterday, our team went to Kedah only for verification purposes. "The owner still has some matters to resolve with Motac (Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry), as the bus is registered as a tour bus," he said when contacted today. Earlier, it was reported that police had recorded statements from 18 people as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash at KM53 of the East–West Highway. Statements have been obtained from 13 surviving students who have since been discharged from hospital, as well as the driver of the Perodua Alza involved in the collision. Other witnesses include the driver's wife, who is currently receiving treatment at Baling Hospital, a dashcam witness whose video has gone viral on social media, and a forensic doctor from Gerik Hospital. On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with the Perodua Alza on Monday.
