Over 200 prisoners escape from Pakistan jail during evacuation after earthquake
One inmate was killed, and three paramilitary Frontier Corps personnel and one jail staff were injured in the Monday (June 2, 2025) night incident in Karachi's Malir jail, Geo News reported.
According to prison authorities, over 80 prisoners have been recaptured.
Karachi has been hit by a series of earthquakes in the last 24 hours.
Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah said over 600 prisoners were taken out from their barracks during the tremors.
"Amid the chaos, 216 managed to flee,' the report quoted Shah as saying.
He added that over 135 prisoners remain at large, and search efforts are ongoing.
Law enforcement authorities have launched a joint operation to track down the remaining escapees.
Sindh's Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar termed the incident the "most serious jailbreak" in recent years, the report said.
The Minister said that all escaped inmates were identified, and targeted raids were underway at their residences and adjoining areas.
He added that an enquiry committee would be formed to investigate the incident.
Malir Jail housed over 6,000 inmates at the time of the incident, most of whom were involved in drug-related cases, the report said, quoting prison officials.
Karachi has experienced 16 mild earthquakes since Sunday, according to the Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

BSF hands over intruder's body to Pakistan Rangers
Representative image JAMMU: BSF has handed over to Pakistan Rangers the body of a Pakistani intruder shot dead by the border force while trying to enter India via international border in Jammu and Kashmir 's Kathua district on Monday evening. 'Pakistan Rangers identified the deceased as Siraj Ali (51), from Sarhali village in Pakistan's Narowal district,' a BSF spokesperson said. BSF had shot Siraj in the leg after he ignored warnings against intruding into India. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, the official said. After establishing the man's identity, BSF contacted Pakistan Rangers and handed over the body at BOP Octroi Suchetgarh Wednesday.

16 Border Security Force Personnel Get Gallantry Medals For Operation Sindoor
New Delhi: Sixteen Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been awarded gallantry medals for displaying "conspicuous bravery" and "unmatched valour" during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The medals for gallantry (GM) for these troops, some of whom destroyed enemy surveillance cameras while others neutralised drone attacks, were announced by the Union government on the eve of the 79th Independence Day. The paramilitary force is tasked with guarding the 2,290-km-long India-Pakistan International Border (IB), apart from the Line of Control (LoC), under the Army's operational control along the western flank of the country. "This Independence Day, 16 Brave Seema Praharis (border guards) are being awarded Gallantry Medals for their conspicuous bravery & unmatched valour, for being resolute & steadfast during the Ops Sindoor. "The medals are a testament to the Nation's faith & trust reposed in India's First Line of Defence: The Border Security Force," the BSF said in a social media post. Under Operation Sindoor undertaken by the three defence forces along with the BSF on the border, India targeted terrorist and military facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from May 7 to 10 in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. Two BSF personnel were killed in action, while seven were injured during the operation. Sub-Inspector Vyas Dev, who lost his left leg after a Pakistani mortar shell fell at his border post, has been awarded, along with Constable Suddi Rabha, for undertaking a "risk-prone" mission to replenish ammunition to forward deployed troops during the operation. Dev's citation said he "suffered life-threatening injuries, but he remained conscious, stabilised himself and bravely engaged in his given task, motivated his fellow soldiers and exhibited tremendous courage". Rabha stood "shoulder-to-shoulder" with his commander (Dev) and refused to yield despite suffering grievous injuries. Another unit commanded by under-probation Assistant Commandant Abhishek Srivastav was deployed at the highly sensitive border post at Kharkola in Jammu, only 200 metres from the IB. On May 10, Srivastav along with his troops -- Head Constable Brij Mohan Singh and Constables Depeswar Barman, Bhupendra Bajpai, Rajan Kumar and Basavaraja Shivappa Sunkada -- engaged a swarm of Pakistani drones and neutralised them, but one UAV dropped a mortar shell in their bunker. Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaj and Constable Deepak Chingakham were killed in this action. They are expected to be decorated with military medals for bravery posthumously. Another unit under Deputy Commandant Ravindra Rathore, Inspector Devi Lal, Head Constable Sahib Singh and Constable Kanwaraj Singh displayed "exceptional courage" and "operational brilliance" under intense pressure and saved the life of a fellow jawan "whose life was in peril". Assistant Sub-Inspector Udai Vir Singh was deployed at the Jabowal border post in Jammu and he destroyed a Pakistani surveillance camera amid "intense" enemy fire at his location. Despite suffering a life-threatening sharpnel wound to his upper lip, Singh refused evacuation and went on to destroy a Pakistani "heavy machine gun nest (post)", his citation stated. "His actions ensured uninterrupted domination from the Indian side and inspired fellow troops," it said. ASI Rajappa BT and Constable Manohar Xalxo undertook a "high risk" mission at border post Karotana Khurd in Jammu on May 10 when the said post reported "critical shortage" of automatic grenade launcher ammunition. While replenishing the ammunition, a mortar shell fell on the magazine and the two suffered grievous injuries, but they ensured completion of their task. Assistant Commandant Alok Negi, along with two of his troops, executed "relentless and accurate" mortar fire on enemy positions for 48 hours and their "fearless" conduct ensured zero casualties and maintained operational dominance, according to the citation. The government also announced gallantry medals for other police and central armed police forces personnel, who undertook other operations. This includes 128 for Jammu and Kashmir Police, 20 for the CRPF and 14 for Chhattisgarh Police.

FBI nabs Bishnoi's close aide linked to Nadir Shah murder
New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are learnt to have apprehended Randeep Malik, a key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar syndicate, in the US. Malik had been operating from the US, allegedly orchestrating killings on Bishnoi's instructions. He was wanted in connection with the high-profile Nadir Shah murder case in Delhi, as well as the grenade blasts outside clubs in Gurgaon and Chandigarh a few months ago. Malik was picked up from his rented accommodation and is being held at the Jackson Parish Correctional Center in Louisiana, according to sources. "FBI has shared the arrest information with Indian agencies, marking a significant step in international cooperation against organised crime. The process for his extradition will begin soon," a source said. Malik's interrogation is expected to open a can of worms, particularly in the Nadir Shah case, in which Delhi Police's Special Cell came under the scanner for their suspicious activity during and before the killing. Shah, a Dubai-based entrepreneur, was shot dead outside his gym in Greater Kailash-I in Aug last year. The alleged plotter was Malik, who acted on instructions from Lawrence Bishnoi , Goldy Brar and Hashim Baba. "The shooters waited outside the gym, but grew impatient when Shah didn't emerge. In a calculated move, Malik called Shah just five minutes before the murder, asking him to step out of the gym to meet someone. The plan worked, and the shooters fired a dozen shots, killing Shah on the spot," said a source. Just one week before the murder, cops from the counter-intelligence unit met Shah at a farmhouse for a "sensitive probe". Moreover, a day before the murder, the DCP and ACP of the Special Cell were in the vicinity of Shah's gym, and many other Special Cell personnel were present in the area at the time of the murder. Despite this, the Special Cell was allowed to continue investigating the case, sparking concerns about a potential cover-up or prior knowledge of the impending crime. The sequence of events suggested serious lapses, leaving the cell under scrutiny. Malik was engaged in the transport business in the US for the past nine years. He owns two truck-trolleys — he drives one and had a driver for the other. Police said Malik came in contact with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after he went abroad. Malik is originally from Anchla Kalan village in Jind's Safidon. "He has a sister, whose wedding he watched live from the US. His parents live alone in the village, and almost all the villagers have distanced themselves from him," a dossier on him reads. The first FIR was registered against Malik in 2011 at Kurukshetra police station in a case of extortion and intimidation. He was later wanted in several cases, including by NIA. Malik was working closely with Brar in the US, coordinating the killings and arranging logistics for their henchmen using Signal application, police said.
