Harman makes move at Open, mixed bag again for McIlroy

CNA18-07-2025
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland :Former champion Brian Harman climbed to the top of the second-round leaderboard at the British Open as home favourite Rory McIlroy's rollercoaster ride continued at Royal Portrush on Friday.
American Harman lifted the Claret Jug at a soggy Royal Liverpool two years ago but arrived on the Northern Ireland coast under the radar.
However, he gained four shots in his opening 10 holes to reach six-under along with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard.
England's Tyrrell Hatton was a shot back on five-under halfway through his round, as was American Harris English.
After Thursday's heavy rain showers and stiff breezes, bright conditions and light winds greeted the early groups on Friday and with receptive greens several players profited.
With his trademark accuracy and hot putter again in evidence, the 38-year-old Harman birdied the par-four opening hole after a superb approach shot left him a tap-in.
Harman capitalised on the two par-five holes on the outward nine, with birdies on both, and reached six-under after another laser-like approach left him a tap-in on the 10th.
Hojgaard, who like Harman began two shots off the overnight leaders, picked up five birdies in his opening 13 holes with his only blemish a bogey at the seventh.
His twin brother Nicolai was also on the front page of the leaderboard at three under early in his second round.
McIlroy, again attracting huge galleries, scrambled to a one-under 70 on Thursday and it was a similar story early in his second round as he mixed mistakes and brilliance.
The 36-year-old, bidding to win his second Open 11 years after his first, had the crowds roaring with a birdie on the first and then did brilliantly to salvage a par five at the second after slicing his drive into deep rough and taking a penalty drop.
He dropped a shot at the par-three third after a poor tee shot left him with a horrible stance.
A birdie followed at the fourth to leave McIlroy still at one-under after eight holes.
Other upward movers on Friday were Scotland's Robert MacIntyre who reached three under after going out in 33.
Joint overnight leader Jacob Skov Olesen began his second round in horrible fashion with a quadruple bogey eight on the first after driving out of bounds twice off the tee. In one hole he dropped from the top of the leaderboard to 36th.

Emma Raducanu adds Rafael Nadal's former coach to her team ahead of US Open

Photo: Instagram / @emmaraducanu British tennis star Emma Raducanu recently added Rafael Nadal's former coach, Francisco Roig, to her team on a full-time basis. This addition happened a month before the US Open. Raducanu has been working with her British coach, Mark Petchey, on an unofficial basis ever since March, and this partnership has shown positive results in the athlete's season performance. The 22-year-old athlete had difficulties with a coach in recent years until her part-time collaboration with Petchey, which successfully led her to the quarterfinals at the Miami Open last March, followed by a last-16 run at the Italian Open and last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club this year. However, Petchey is unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach due to his TV commitments. After having a trial with Roig following this year's Wimbledon, Raducanu will then start working with him for the Cincinnati Open. The Spanish coach has worked with Rafael Nadal, together with Nadal's uncle Toni, for the majority of the 22-time Grand Slam champion's tennis career. Furthermore, he was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Roig agreed to a contract with Raducanu until the end of 2025. Raducanu to pair up with Alcaraz at the US Open Young tennis stars, Alcaraz and Raducanu, were one of the exciting pairs for this season's mixed doubles at the US Open. The pair will play on-court together for the very first time. With this, Alcaraz admitted: 'She's gonna be the boss… I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament… I've known Emma for a really long time, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. We are going to enjoy it, for sure.' The Spaniard added: 'I will try to bring my doubles skill. We will try to win, but obviously it's going to be really, really fun… I was thinking that I couldn't play better unless it was with Emma. I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request.' With this partnership, Raducanu also expressed that Alcaraz was an inspiration to her: 'I've known him for years, and actually in Wimbledon 2021 it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021… And I remember he was always playing the day before me, and I was playing like the second day of the round, and I would see him win, and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too.' Benn and Eubank rematch scheduled for November at Tottenham Stadium

LONDON :British rivals Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on November 15 for an eagerly-awaited rematch of their non-title middleweight clash last April, organisers announced on Wednesday. Eubank won the first 12 round fight, an echo of a clash 35 years previously between their fathers Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, at the same North London venue by unanimous 116-112 points decision. Ring Magazine, owned by Turki Alalshikh who chairs Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, reported the deal was completed on Tuesday and it would sponsor the "Unfinished Business" fight along with Riyadh Season. Sela, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), will be the lead promoter. Ring said it believed the weight terms would remain the same. "Back to Spurs we go for the GETBACK," Benn's promoter Eddie Hearn posted on Instagram. A rematch had originally been pencilled in for September 20, but Eubank had said he would not be ready by that date.

Snooker-Higgins leads launch of independent players association

Four-time world snooker champion John Higgins has been named Director and Chairman of the newly-formed Professional Snooker Players Association (PSPA), the independent players' body said on Wednesday, as it seeks a stronger voice in the sport. Among those on the players' board are Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, while Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong have signed up as members, the PSPA added. "The PSPA has been founded at this time because players currently do not believe they have a large enough voice in the commercial direction of the sport and that they feel the governance of snooker, as a whole, should factor in more of the views of the players," PSPA said in a media release. The association says it wants to have a collaborative relationship with snooker's governing bodies, including the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), World Snooker and the existing WPBSA Players Board. "Our sport deserves a strong, independent players' association that stands for fairness, transparency, and progress," Higgins said. "We seek to work closely with the WPBSA, World Snooker, and the WPBSA Players Board to ensure that players benefit from a full suite of support mechanisms ... while also maintaining true independence when it comes to commercial negotiations and agreements."
