Chunk Of Gold Sparkles In Gate-To-Wire West Virginia Derby Romp
Chunk of Gold, wearing blinkers for the first time, capitalized on a poor start by heavily favored East Avenue, both starters in the Kentucky Derby (G1) this spring, and led from start to finish in the Sunday's $400,000 West Virginia Derby (G3) at Mountaineer Casino, Resort and Races.
Trained by Ethan West for owner Terry Stephens, Chunk of Gold won for the second time in his seven-race career after collecting three second-place finishes in graded stakes. He was the second choice at 2-1 in a field of eight in the 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-olds.
'Winning this race means a lot,' said Jareth Loveberry, who has ridden the Preservationist colt in his last five starts. 'I rode at Mountaineer from 2009-2014. I met Ethan (West) here and we've known each other for 12 years. It's also my birthday today, which makes it extra meaningful.
'He's a very honest horse that tries every time. I was planning to be close early in the race, but when East Avenue didn't make the lead, we took his spot.'
Chunk of Gold nursed a one-length lead over McAfee and Just a Fair Shake for more than six furlongs, then opened his lead turning for home to win by 4¼ lengths in 1:50.97 on a fast track. McAfee captured second, while Brotha Keny rallied well for third. East Avenue was fifth. The winner paid $6.80.
'It was fantastic,' West said of the colt's performance. 'All the credit goes to Jareth. He rode a great race. We had hoped to be close early, so we added blinkers to get him to be more responsive. But after the start, Jareth basically walked the dog.'
'It's exciting,' said Stephens, who had a large group on hand for the race. "He has run very well in graded stakes and it's nice to see him win one. I'm happy for the horse, the trainer and all the connections. I'm very proud.'
Chunk of Gold was bred in Kentucky by late former Kentucky Governor Brereton C. Jones. He was produced by the Cairo Prince mare Play for Gold. He was ninth, just behind eighth-place finisher East Avenue, in the Kentucky Derby after a trio of seconds in Derby preps: the Leonatus Jan. 18 at Turfway Park, the Risen Star (G2) Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds, and the Louisiana Derby (G2) March 22 at the New Orleans track. He entered Sunday's race off a runner-up finish in the Ohio Derby (G2) at Thistledown.
The $246,400 winner's share of the West Virginia Derby purse elevated his career earnings to $695,218.

Astros' Yordan Alvarez to start rehab assignment after missing over 3 months
HOUSTON — Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez will begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday, moving the three-time All-Star slugger a step closer toward his long-awaited return from a fractured right hand. Alvarez will report to Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday and play 'a few games,' manager Joe Espada said on Sunday morning. Alvarez will serve as the Hooks' designated hitter on Tuesday. Advertisement Alvarez spent much of the past two weeks at the team's spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla. He took eight at-bats in live batting practice on Saturday and flew back to Houston on Sunday. Though Alvarez was in the Astros' clubhouse before Sunday's game, the team did not make him available for interviews. Alvarez has not appeared in a major-league game since May 2, depriving the injury-ravaged Astros of balance and a power bat they've sorely missed. Houston has managed a 53-39 record in Alvarez's absence and maintained a slim lead over the Seattle Mariners atop the American League West. In a season where as many as 18 Astros have resided on the injured list, Alvarez's absence has invited the most questions and scrutiny. The team initially described his injury as 'right hand inflammation' and allowed Alvarez to face live pitching at Daikin Park in late May, presuming he could be close to a return. A day later, team officials revealed Alvarez suffered a 'small' fracture near the fourth metacarpal. The club did not take new imaging of Alvarez's hand prior to his live batting practice session, during which Alvarez reaggravated the injury. Alvarez suffered another setback in early July after reporting to the team's spring training complex. The team took an unusual step of releasing a lengthy statement in the aftermath, revealing Alvarez received two injections in his hand and that inflammation was 'the main cause' of Alvarez's setback. Reds designate outfielder Jake Fraley for assignment
CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jake Fraley was designated for assignment on Sunday, with catcher Tyler Stephenson's thumb injury and a short bench contributing to the decision. The Reds also recalled right-hander Connor Phillips and outfielder Will Benson from Triple-A Louisville and optioned left-hander Joe La Sorsa to Triple-A. 'We came to the idea of kind of giving Jake a chance to play where maybe he thinks he deserves to play, which I understand, is maybe better than him sitting the bench here,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. 'Stephenson is banged up. We were a little concerned about playing short, maybe a two-man bench.' Fraley, 30, is in his fifth major-league season, his fourth with Cincinnati. He is batting .232 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 67 games. He hyperextended his knee after making an error in left field to allow a run to score in the 10th inning of a 6-5, 11-inning loss to the first-place Brewers on Saturday. Francona said neither the miscue nor the injury factored into the DFA move. Stephenson reaggravated an injury to his left thumb during the Pittsburgh series and is day to day. Jose Trevino, who was behind the plate Saturday night, got the start for Sunday's day game. Francona said the decision on Fraley, a popular player among fans and in the clubhouse, wasn't easy. 'Not that I needed an excuse to lose sleep last night, but you do, because you're thinking about it,' Francona said. 'You're making decisions that alter their life. The day when I stop thinking about it, I will re-retire.' Cincinnati, the only team this season that hasn't been swept in a series, has dropped the first two games of the three-game set against the Brewers, who have won 14 straight games. ___ AP MLB:
