Super Bowl trophy renamed after Tom Brady? Why one NFL legend is pushing for it
None of the major team trophies in the NFL are currently named after a player. Bill Belichick thinks that should change, though, and he has a specific player in mind.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach believes that the quarterback he won each of those titles with should be the namesake of the Super Bowl trophy.
"Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy," Belichick said on the "Let's Go!" podcast, in reference to Tom Brady. "He won seven of them."
Currently, the Super Bowl trophy is named after Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Green Bay Packers to victory in each of the first two Super Bowls. While those two Super Bowl wins were the only two Super Bowl wins for that iteration of the Packers, Lombardi had also helped Green Bay win three NFL titles before those victories.
Since then, though, several other dynasties have emerged. The Pittsburgh Steelers won four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. The San Francisco 49ers had four Super Bowl wins in the 1980s. The Dallas Cowboys won three of their five Super Bowls in the first half of the 1990s.
Brady and Belichick followed the Cowboys in the NFL's line of dynasties, going on an unprecedented run with the New England Patriots. The duo led the team to six Super Bowl titles, winning three in the early 2000s before adding three more in the 2010s. Brady won his seventh Super Bowl title in 2020 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, not only giving him the most of any player in NFL history, but also giving him more than any team.
As Brady and Belichick's success with the Patriots was once viewed by many as unlikely to be matched, the Kansas City Chiefs are slowly gaining ground. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have already won three Super Bowls and punched their ticket to play in their fifth big game together (Super Bowl LIX, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX) as they seek to become the first team to ever win three straight Super Bowls.
With Belichick being one of the people who can relate to the success that the Chiefs have had, Belichick was asked by his "Let's Go!" co-host Jim Gray how big of an ego he had and how much he had to sublimate it for the good of the team. Belichick laughed at that notion, saying that "coaches don't win games, coaches lose them" before adding that the Super Bowl trophy should be named after Brady.
"Players win games. You can't win games without good players," Belichick said. "I don't care who the coach is, it's impossible. You can't win without good players. You know, I found that out when I had [Lawrence] Taylor and [Carl] Banks and Harry Carson, Pepper Johnson, Jim Burt, Everson Walls, all those guys at the Giants. Same thing when we got good at Cleveland and then at New England. It's [Tom] Brady, it's [Willie] McGinest, it's [Mike] Vrabel, it's [Tedy] Bruschi, it's Corey Dillon, it's Randy Moss, Troy Brown, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison. Those are guys that won the games. I didn't make any tackles. I didn't make any kicks. That was [Adam] Vinatieri that made that kick in four inches of snow.
"You got to have good players and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win. You want to put them in a position where if they go out there and play well, they'll have a chance to win. That's what Coach [Bill] Parcells taught me, is there's always a way to win. You just got to figure out what it is, and you have to give the players a chance."
Brady will be a part of his first Super Bowl as a broadcaster this year, calling Super Bowl LIX on FOX. Belichick, meanwhile, became North Carolina's head coach in January.

It didn't take long for DC Defenders tight end Briley Moore to reach out to his quarterback, Jordan Ta'amu, who Moore believed "was a lock" to win the distinguished honor. At 2:51 p.m. local time, Moore sent a text to his quarterback. The 27-year-old shared the message verbatim in a news conference following the Defenders' 58-34 win over the Panthers in the 2025 UFL championship game. "I can't wait either at all," Moore read. "But when you're holding up that trophy on stage tomorrow night, I'm gonna be chanting MVP." That's exactly what happened. The entire Defenders team serenaded its quarterback after Ta'amu put together a record-breaking performance in the championship game. Ta'amu completed 21 of 28 passes for a league-record 390 yards while logging five total touchdowns in DC's rout. Despite being a part of the action, Moore could hardly believe what his quarterback had achieved. "I mean, this stat line is insane," Moore said, while glancing over a stat sheet from Saturday's game. "But that's just him. After getting that news (he didn't win MVP) 24 hours ago, he didn't flinch. He didn't try to do too much. He didn't let him affect him, and he just balled out." Moore believes one of the reasons Ta'amu progressed so much in 2025 — a season during which he led the league in passing touchdowns with 17 — was that the quarterback was playing "with a different confidence." Ta'amu explained his confidence stemmed from the trust he has in his teammates, who he said motivated him after he finished behind Perkins in the regular-season MVP voting. "Just having that brotherhood behind me meant a lot," Ta'amu said when he explained how he felt about Moore's pregame message to him. While Ta'amu praised Perkins as a "great quarterback" who deserved to be the MVP, he acknowledged that his missing out on the award fueled him and the entire Defenders team. "It just gave us a big chip on our shoulder to go out there and play hard," Ta'amu said about the championship game. The Defenders were able to do that, thanks in no small part to their offense. DC scored on its opening 10 possessions and set a UFL record for points scored in a game with 58. Moore was among those happy DC exacted revenge on Michigan, both for the team's sake and for Ta'amu's. "I feel like I didn't do enough throughout the season to get him that MVP," Moore said. After almost a year of recovering from that injury, Johnson is just a few months away from returning to the field for the Jets. During mandatory minicamp, head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed the Jets expect Johnson to be ready for the start of the regular season. 'It was a pleasure having Aaron around and stuff like that, and I wish him the best,' Johnson said. 'But when I get between those lines, there's no friends. And I think he knows that, and he feels the same, so I'm excited. 'It's just another game, but for me, it's going to be my first game back and there's a lot of emotions. And when my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well.' Johnson and Rodgers have recovered from Achilles injuries over the last two years. Hall's situation, dating back even before this offseason, has been an unsteady one. The trade rumors in particular just won't go away ... Until, maybe, now. Hall is now speaking frankly about having heard all of the rumors himself, saying, "I was seeing it just like everybody else was seeing it.'' So how to make them go away? Hear the truth from the boss. Hall said Glenn called him to shut down the buzz. "That meant a lot," Hall said. "At first, I just kind of like, OK, we'll just see what happens. And then, AG called me and told me: 'Breece, you think I want to trade you?' And I was like, I don't know. He's like, 'Breece, I don't want to trade you. I want you to be here. In addition to Hall, the Jets have Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu, and Donovan Edwards. But Hall is the one with the skins on the wall, especially as he lead the NFL in receptions by a running back in 2023. How about a new contract to prove the club's devotion to him? That's a different story; extensions are certainties for his fellow 2022 draftees Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. ... but for Hall, maybe not so much. Advertisement Allen is a young and powerful back and is highly thought of. But later in the 2024 season, Davis put up yards per carry numbers that impressed. So the "by-committee'' idea is real. But so is Glenn's honesty. "For me to get to know him and everything, it's been cool,'' Hall said. "And to see how our practices are run, how competitive he likes it to be, and how he likes to put the ball down and just let us play. It's been fun."
