Fare dodger tells staff he'll ‘get away with it' before not getting away with it

A fare dodger told staff he 'would get away with it' minutes before realising he wouldn't.
In a clip shown on Channel 5's Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law, the passenger, shown wearing a black jacket and hood, is questioned by a revenue inspection officer after taking a journey for which he hadn't paid.
The man, in a blasé attitude, tells the inspector he won't be able to stop him dodging fares, saying 'he will get away with it'.
When he was finally handed a fine, he told staff he 'couldn't give a toss' andsaid he would go to court.
He was issued with a fine totalling £55.60. If not paid within 21 days, the charge nearly doubles to £105.60.
The passenger argued with the officer named Sam at the ticket gates inside London Waterloo.
He is asked: 'So you're just going to fare evade and try and get away with it – is that what you are saying?'
'I will get away it', the defiant passenger replies.
The fare dodger is promptly advised that footage of him and the conversation has been taped on camera and will be sent over to British Transport Police.
But he still attempted to goad the officer into letting him off, telling him: 'You might as well let me go, man.'
When asked his name and address, he replied: 'I don't even know how to spell my name, I'll be honest.'
He was then shown threatening to walk out and, despite being reminded that he was being recorded, he said: 'That doesn't bother me.
'I don't know why I'm standing here. I could just walk away to be honest.'
Worried that the passenger would force his way out of the barriers, the inspector calls security officers.
After realising his escape route had been cut off, the fare evader relented and handed over his personal details, allowing the inspector to verify his identity.
But when he is finally handed a fixed penalty notice, he defiantly answers: 'I couldn't give a toss.
'I'm not paying that.'
He later qualified: 'I'm not paying for transport.'
The inspector further explained that failure to pay may result in a prosecution being pursued.
'Lovely. I love that', the fare dodger replied.
Remaining defiant, he continued: 'I'm not keeping it, because I'm not paying it. I'll go to court.'
TfL said it uses an intelligence-led approach with advanced tools like an Irregular Travel Analysis Platform (ITAP).
It combs through ticketing and journey data, passengers' information, CCTV and travel patterns to spot fare evaders racking up the biggest bills.
Around 3.4 per cent of passengers on TfL services travel without paying the correct fare. More Trending
The transport authority spent almost £22 million on a fare dodging crackdown last year.
The Channel 5 series previously showed another fare dodger being caught in the act after evading £3,500 in unpaid tickets.
He was found having used a card with no money on it to repeatedly open station gates without having paid a penny in fares.

Passengers cheer while ‘drunk' mum and daughter Tiktok stars forced off plane
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Tiktok influencers were chucked off a UK flight to Jamaica after they swore at staff and had to be 'strapped down to their seats'. The mum and daughter, who ran the account @angel777987, were filmed causing chaos on the aircraft which took off from Manchester on May 28. After a two hour delay, the pair began drinking and quickly began shouting and swearing at staff – with the content creator daughter demanding to get off mid air. Fellow passenger Mandy, who captured the footage on @balloonsbykandykrush, said the pair were asked to calm down throughout the flight. But the daughter refused to sit in her seat in row 22, and staff were forced to strap her down. Mandy told MailOnline: 'The airline made her sit back down again and the captain announced that due to reckless behaviour there will be a delay in Jamaica as she will be arrested. 'They then put Angel to the back of the rows, strapped her in the seat. They cuffed her and then the famous TikTok woman, Angel, I believe, got arrested.' The flight landed in Jamaica six hours later than the original time after the crew was forced to make an emergency landing in Canada due to the mum and daughter's behaviour. They were arrested once the plane landed, with footage showing passengers cheering as the pair are lead away from their seats by police. The mum begins shouting in the face of one of the officers while Angel can be seen smiling and telling passengers 'bye'. More Trending Angel's Tiktok account has since been closed. Before the argument broke out, a video uploaded to the account shows Angel drinking with her mum at the airport. The pair can be seen posing with their drinks, with Angel captioning the clip: 'In Manny airport me and mum are on our way to paradise guess where?' Metro has contacted TUI for comment. UK prison chief calls for US-style 'supermax jails' to protect guards
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It is only a matter of time before a prison officer is murdered by an inmate, the chairman of the Prison Officers' Association (POA) has warned. A prison officer was airlifted to hospital yesterday after being stabbed while on duty at the high security HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire. That attack came days after three prison officers were targeted – including one with boiling water and another left with a bleed on the brain – in 48 hours at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire. The number of assaults on staff in adult prisons in England and Wales per year has reached its highest level in a decade, new data shows. The figures come after several incidents in prisons have raised concerns over staff safety and the standard of protective equipment at work. Four officers were attacked with hot oil and homemade weapons by Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi at HMP Frankland in County Durham on April 12. Mark Fairhurst, chairman of the POA, has now called for those inmates posing the most risk to his staff to be 'totally locked down'. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he said jails are 'awash' with 'all kinds of illicit items' – including drugs, phones and weapons – but 'we very rarely lock them down'. Mr Fairhurst said 'now is the time to introduce supermax facilities' like those in the US, 'so people who pose the most risk to staff are totally locked down'. 'It is only a matter of time before one of my colleagues is murdered on duty,' he added. Some 10,605 assaults on staff in male and female jails were recorded in 2024, up from 9,204 in 2023 and nearly three times the 3,640 in 2014. The rate of assaults on staff stood at 122 per 1,000 prisoners last year, up from 108 in 2023 and 43 a decade earlier. Mr Fairhurst linked the violence inside prisons to the amount of contraband being smuggled in from the outside using drones. 'We need to secure the airspace above our prisons,' he said. 'Why are our airspaces not tightened? Why do we have ingress of drones in our prisons? Surely there must be technology out there that prevents drones entering airspaces.' More Trending Metro has contacted the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for comment. A spokesperson told the BBC that attacks on prison staff are 'unacceptable' and will not be tolerated. They said the MoJ was 'gripping the situation by investing in prison maintenance and security, working with the police and others to tackle serious organised crime'. A spokesman said earlier this month they are 'also bolstering security to stop more contraband entering jails'. Carl admits that he can't get Abi out of his head and knows it's terrible to fancy his brother's partner, but he seemingly cannot make those feelings go away. Abi tells Carl to back off, but he seems adamant whatever they've got going on isn't going to end just yet. But is Carl right? What will happen next between him and Abi? More Trending 'She's been given this whole life with Kevin, the kids are secure, she's got a child now who's safe and she's all sorted.
