Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will on Saturday meet in a highly-anticipated, long-delayed fight – one of the biggest bouts in British boxing.
The rivals will clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, more than three decades after their fathers Chris Sr and Nigel Benn settled their own bitter grudge, and two-and-a-half years after Eubank Jr vs Benn was initially due to take place.
In October 2022, the fight fell apart on short notice upon the revelation that Benn had returned two adverse drug-test findings, leading him to be banned from boxing in Britain until recently. When the 28-year-old was finally cleared, his match-up with Eubank Jr, 35, was quickly rebooked.
And the build has already been heated, with a press conference in February ending in chaos, as Eubank Jr slapped Benn in the face with an egg. It was a reference to the WBC saying in 2023 that 'elevated consumption of eggs' was a 'reasonable excuse' for Benn's adverse drug-test findings. Another press conference, two days later, saw Eubank Jr threaten Nigel Benn, who put his hands around the younger man's neck in the week's earlier chaos.

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia came from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and reach the second round of the new WTA 500 event at Queen's Club on Monday. After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2.

The Premier League champions have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, who is expected to join the Reds' under-21 squad. Liverpool's summer spree doesn't stop there; they're on the verge of welcoming Wirtz and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez, with the German attacker poised to set a record as both Liverpool's most expensive ever signing and potentially the priciest player in the history of British football. The Reds have reportedly made an offer totalling £113million for the Leverkusen ace, who, despite his current club's £125m valuation, seems eager to join the Merseyside club. Neville discussed Liverpool's summer signings on the It's Called Soccer podcast, applauding the club for potentially nailing down three significant deals surprisingly early, and he spoke glowingly of the possible acquisition of Wirtz. "Maybe slightly surprised they've gone so heavy in on Wirtz in terms of the fee, they don't normally go that big but [Arne] Slot deserves it by the way. So I think they have two years of money tanked up and banked up plus they have all the income guaranteed from next season with the Champions League so I think supporting the manager is the right and only thing to do."

Florian Wirtz Liverpool transfer details as fourth bid made and debut given
Florian Wirtz played 'his last match as a Bayer Leverkusen player' on Sunday according to reports in his homeland, and he is soon expected to complete his move to Liverpool Florian Wirtz continues to close in on his record move to Liverpool - but in Germany they are considering the transfer to be as good as done. Wirtz played the full 90 minutes in Stuttgart as Germany lost the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff 2-0 to France on Sunday, with German publication Bild claiming that both the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen 'must have breathed a sigh of relief' that the 22-year-old came through the match unscathed. That is because Leverkusen are now counting on the deal to be done almost as much as Liverpool are, with the Bundesliga club now waiting on the final offer from the Reds following intense but amicable negotiations. Liverpool will offer around £118million for Wirtz, making him the most expensive player ever signed by a British club. The deal will comprise of a fixed fee upfront said to be over £100m, with the rest in a mixture of bonus payments. The offer still falls sort of the £126m that Bayer had been seeking for the outstanding player in the Bundesliga for the last two seasons, but an agreement between the clubs is widely expected to be reached. Bild add that Wirtz will sign a five-year contract at Anfield to tie him to the club until 2030, and following the completion of the formalities of the deal he will then head off on holiday as a Liverpool player. The German publication then go even further and claim that Wirtz will report for pre-season training with Liverpool on July 7, before making his debut for the Reds in the pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13. However that isn't set in stone, and it may well be that Reds boss Arne Slot opts to bring his players back for the new season gradually depending on how much international football they have played over the summer. Wirtz played the full 180 minutes of Germany's Nations League matches against Portugal and France, and so he is likely to be slowly introduced to his new club by the Dutchman. After Preston, Liverpool's only other friendly matches currently scheduled are against AC Milan on July 26 and Yokohama F Marinos on July 30, both on the club's pre-season tour of Japan. Wirtz is expected to be on the tour, and Liverpool could end up scheduling a European pre-season training camp before the Japan trip as in previous summers.
