Avidity Biosciences stock soars on Novartis takeover approach report

-- Avidity Biosciences (NASDAQ:RNA) stock surged 18% Wednesday after the Financial Times reported that Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis (NYSE:NVS) has approached the rare disease-focused biotech company about a potential takeover. According to the report, which cited unidentified people familiar with the matter, Novartis has been evaluating a bid for Avidity and expressed interest in an acquisition in recent weeks. Avidity is reportedly working with advisers to assess its options. The discussions are said to be at an early stage, and there is no guarantee that a deal will materialize, according to the sources cited in the report. The news also lifted shares of Dyne Therapeutics (NASDAQ:DYN), a company operating in a similar space, which also jumped 18% on Wednesday. Novartis has been actively reshaping its portfolio in recent years, focusing on high-growth areas including rare diseases. Any potential acquisition of Avidity would align with this strategy, potentially strengthening Novartis's position in the rare disease treatment market. Why Powell Industries Fell Today

Key Points Powell reported a mixed quarter that led to a sell-off. However, the company has a wide range of performance between its different segments. Importantly, the electric utility segment is growing strongly and now makes up over a quarter of revenue. 10 stocks we like better than Powell Industries › Shares of Powell Industries (NASDAQ: POWL) fell as much as 12.4% on Wednesday, before recovering to a 6.5% decline as of 1 p.m. ET. Powell reported fiscal third-quarter earnings that missed on the top line, but managed to beat in terms of profits. Yet while overall revenue may have disappointed, the underlying trajectory of the company appears better than it may look at first glance. Electric utilities up, oil and petrochemical down Powell is an engineering company that designs, manufactures, and services custom-engineered systems typically geared toward power control systems at large industrial complexes. These include oil and gas, petrochemical, electric utility, light rail traction, data center, and other commercial buildings. The company's fiscal third quarter saw a slight 1% decline in revenue, which missed expectations, but a 3% increase relative to the prior quarter. Yet on the bright side, earnings per share of $3.96 increased 4%, beating expectations and helped out by an encouraging expansion in gross margins. Powell's revenue growth may seem unexciting, given the recent need for more electricity to power artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, which is leading to a reacceleration in electricity demand in the U.S. In that light, there was a lot going on under the surface. Powell's electric utility segment was actually up a whopping 31%, so that fits in with the current trends. Additionally, commercial and light industrial revenue was up 18%. However, Powell also has a significant oil and gas and petrochemical business, and those segments declined 8% and 36%, respectively. Yet the company's overall booking trends seemed positive, as bookings grew 45% quarter over quarter, leading to a 7% sequential growth in backlog. Powell may be a sneaky play on electrification Powell now trades at just a 16.7 multiple based on 2025 estimates, which ends next quarter. That may seem appropriate for a company with low growth, but as the electric utility segment makes up more of the business, the company may surprise to the upside. In the June quarter, the electric utility segment made up 26% of revenue, and commercial & industrial made up another 17%. Therefore, if these segments can continue growing as they have, they could eventually become the major driver of the business in the years ahead. Should you buy stock in Powell Industries right now? Lucid (LCID) Stock Trades Down, Here Is Why

What Happened? Shares of luxury electric car manufacturer Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID) fell 9.7% in the afternoon session after the company reported second-quarter results that missed analyst expectations and lowered its full-year production forecast. The company posted revenue of $259.4 million, which fell roughly in line with analyst estimates. Lucid also cut its 2025 production outlook to a range of 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles, down from a previous target of 20,000. The report revealed a negative gross margin, a figure that included a $54 million hit from tariffs and signaled significant cost pressures. The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Lucid? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. What Is The Market Telling Us Lucid's shares are extremely volatile and have had 55 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 8 days ago when the stock dropped 7.7% on the news that bellwether United Parcel Service (UPS) reported weak earnings and withheld its full-year guidance, citing 'macro-economic uncertainty' and low consumer sentiment. The logistics giant reported a decline in revenue and missed profit estimates, sending a chill through the entire logistics chain. UPS pointed to a challenging economic environment and near-historic lows in U.S. consumer confidence as key factors for its performance. By withholding its full-year forecast, the company signaled significant uncertainty ahead, confirming fears of a broader economic slowdown that could impact demand for shipping and freight services. This news weighed on other ground and rail transportation stocks, as investors worried that the headwinds affecting UPS could be a sign of wider issues across the industry. Lucid is down 27.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $2.21 per share, it is trading 48.2% below its 52-week high of $4.26 from August 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Lucid's shares at the IPO in September 2020 would now be looking at an investment worth $222.95. Unless you've been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. While Nvidia and AMD are trading close to all-time highs, we prefer a lesser-known (but still profitable) semiconductor stock benefiting from the rise of AI.
