Energy markets encountered heightened uncertainty this quarter: Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani

Time of India19-07-2025
During Q1 FY26,
energy markets
faced heightened uncertainty due to sharp fluctuations in crude prices, said Reliance Chairman and MD, Mukesh Ambani, adding that the company's
Oil to Chemicals
(O2C) business posted strong growth by focusing on domestic demand and value-added solutions through the Jio-bp network.
Performance was supported by improvement in fuel and downstream product margins. Natural decline in KGD6 gas production resulted in marginally lower EBITDA for Oil & Gas segment, he said.
Reliance's core oil-to-chemicals segment, which contributes about 57 per cent to overall revenue, had come under pressure in recent quarters as the global economic slowdown and destocking of inventories led to a sharp decline in transportation fuel cracks and sluggish demand for petrochemicals. However, the oil-to-chemicals segment benefited from improved domestic fuel retail margins, a recovery in transportation fuel cracks and a rise in petrochemical demand.
RIL's O2C EBITDA rose 10.8 per cent year-on-year in the June quarter, supported by improved domestic fuel retail margins, stronger transportation fuel cracks, and better PP and PVC spreads. However, segment revenue declined 1.5 per cent year-on-year, impacted by lower crude prices and reduced volumes due to a planned shutdown. Increased domestic fuel placement via Jio-bp partly offset the decline.
The company reported a 1.2 per cent year-on-year decline in revenue from its Oil and Gas segment in Q1 FY26, mainly due to reduced sales volume of KGD6 gas amid natural production decline, lower CBM gas prices, and weaker crude price realisations. The impact was partially offset by better KGD6 gas price realisation. Segment EBITDA also fell 4.1 per cent year-on-year, driven by lower revenues and higher operating costs from increased maintenance activities during the quarter.

Reliance warns of tariff risks weighing on its crude supplies, but sees strong domestic demand

MUMBAI: Reliance Industries, which runs the world's largest single-location oil refinery with 60 million tonnes of refining capacity, has warned that the continuing geopolitical and tariff-related uncertainties could disrupt trade flows and the demand-supply balance in its oil-to-chemicals business. The company, in the FY25 annual report released Thursday, said though it expects crude prices to remain volatile amid evolving sanctions, changing tariff regimes and output decisions by the oil cartel Opec and non-Opec members, oil demand is likely to maintain growth despite growing electric vehicle adoption as the economy is on a strong footing. In its 2025 oil outlook, the company, which closed the year with the highest ever revenue and net income -- Rs 10.71 trillion and Rs 81,309 crore respectively in FY25 -- said the ramp-up of new refineries may lead to weaker product cracks. "But expected closures can create upside potential for refining margins. Domestic fuel demand is expected to remain healthy with increasing economic activity, while domestic demand for downstream chemical products is expected to grow ahead of the GDP growth rate, driven by demand from infrastructure, packaging, automobiles and agriculture," RIL said. The company further said it remains on track to become net carbon zero by 2035 and is progressing rapidly to set up a 30 gwh modular battery gigafactory for cells, packs, containerised BESS (battery energy storage systems), and the backward integration into battery materials. In his address to the shareholders, company chairman Mukesh Ambani said RIL sees the 'breakneck speed with which the world is changing, reshaped by digital disruption, global shifts, and technological breakthroughs, not as a challenge but as an opportunity. We are reimagining our future and reshaping our businesses to become a new-age deep-tech enterprise.' 'From energy to entertainment, from retail to digital services, we are integrating next-generation technologies across every business vertical. Over 1,000 of our in-house scientists are leading cutting-edge research in areas like AI, renewable energy, advanced materials, and digital platforms, while our manufacturing infrastructure is being future-proofed to support the national aspiration of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse,' Ambani said. Ambani said even amidst extreme external volatility, Reliance delivered a year of solid and balanced growth in FY25: revenue rose 7.1% to a record Rs 10.71 trillion, from which it earned an operating profit of Rs 1.83 trillion which grew 2.9% on-year and a net income of Rs 81,309 crore, which was 2.9% more than it had earned in the previous fiscal.

5G Spectrum: Behind Reliance Jio's significant government dues

Reliance Jio's payment liability to the department of telecommunications (DoT) stood at ₹ 1.09 trillion as of March-end, a decline from ₹ 1.13 trillion a year earlier, according to Reliance Industries Ltd's FY25 annual report. The liability remains substantial, primarily due to the company's historically aggressive spectrum acquisition strategy — most notably during the 2022 5G auction, in which it secured radio frequencies worth ₹ 88,000 crore. In comparison, Bharti Airtel's deferred payment liability stood at ₹ 95,028 crore as of March-end, compared to ₹ 1.04 trillion in the year-ago period, according to its FY25 annual report. 'Jio's spectrum footprint increased to 26,801 MHz (uplink + downlink), solidifying its leadership position,' RIL said in its annual report. As of March-end, the value of spectrum of Reliance Jio was at ₹ 1.47 trillion compared to ₹ 69,852 crore in the year-ago period. In the 2022 spectrum auction, Jio acquired the largest chunk of 5G spectrum on sale, followed by spectrum acquisition in 2024, wherein it acquired airwaves worth ₹ 974 crore. As of June-end, Jio had 498 million users. Of them, the country's largest telecom operator has over 210 million 5G users. The company said it is working on future communication technologies and is actively engaged in the research and development of 6G, aiming to lead both in its development and deployment globally. As of March-end, Jio held 485 patents, establishing itself as one of India's largest patent holders, particularly in 5G and 6G technologies, according to the annual report. However, it has said that disruptive technological changes could make the current technologies obsolete. 'The entry of a new disruptive player or price competition could impact long-term returns,' Reliance Industries said in the annual report. This threat expressed by the company comes amid the upcoming launch of satellite services in the country. While Jio is also building its own satellite communication platform in collaboration with Luxembourg-based satellite company SES, it has also partnered with SpaceX to offer Starlink's broadband internet services to its customers in India. 'Jio is extending its leadership in technologies like 5G, fixed broadband and converged networks, to now address the huge opportunity provided by AI services. Jio's leadership in network, consumer and enterprise technologies will maintain its distinct competitive advantage,' the annual report said. The telecom operator is also looking to export its indigenously-developed technologies. As of March-end, Jio had 94,523 employees compared to 90,067 in FY24. Notably, the remuneration of Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani rose to ₹ 2.31 crore in FY25 from ₹ 1.01 crore in FY24. 'We raise our FY25-27 subscriber estimates by up to 2% to pick up mobile subscribers as well as higher FWA (fixed wireless access) subscribers and expect RJio's mobile subscribers to reach 517 million and home broadband subscribers to reach 38 million by March 2027,' said analysts at Jefferies in a note dated 18 July. As of June-end, Jio's FWA subscribers were at 7.4 million, according to the company. In the April-June quarter, Jio Platforms Ltd, which houses RIL's telecom and digital services business, reported a 1.2% sequential growth in consolidated net profit to ₹ 7,110 crore. Consolidated revenue from operations rose 3.07% sequentially to ₹ 35,032 crore. On a year-on-year basis, Jio Platforms clocked a 19% revenue growth and a 25% increase in net profit for the quarter ended June. The growth was boosted by strong subscriber additions across mobile and home broadband and increased data consumption on the company's network.
