PM Modi remembers legendary actor Saroja Devi as an 'exemplary icon of Indian cinema'
'Saddened by the passing of the noted film personality, B Saroja Devi Ji. She will be remembered as an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture. Her diverse performances left an indelible mark across generations. Her works, spanning different languages and covering diverse themes, highlighted her versatile nature. Fondly called 'Abhinaya Saraswathi' in Kannada and 'Kannadathu Paingili' in Tamil, the 87-year-old star passed away at her Malleswaram residence in Bengaluru on Monday morning.
Hundreds of people, including politicians and film personalities, paid homage to the legendary actress.
All-India Congress Committee General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka, actors Shivrajkumar, Jaggesh, and Upendra, Bengaluru Rural MP Dr CN Manjunath, former ministers TB Jayachandra and Janardhana Reddy, Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce President Narasimhalu and others paid their last respects to the actress.
The mortal remains will be kept till Tuesday morning and at 11.30 am, it will be taken to her village Dashavara in Channapatna for the last rites, informed her son Harsha Gautham. The family had decided to donate her eyes and the procedure was completed. The actress will be laid to rest with state honours.
CM Siddaramaiah also expressed his condolence. 'The news of the death of veteran Kannada actress is painful. Her departure is a great loss to the Indian film industry. May Sarojadevi's soul rest in peace. My condolences to the bereaved family and fans said,' the chief minister said.
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy also paid his tributes. 'Sarojadevi, who acted with all the leading actors of all Indian languages, including the great actor Dr Rajkumar, was the goddess of acting for her fans. Her unique acting kept us all spellbound.
She has made a huge contribution to enriching the Kannada silver screen; she has acted in more than 200 films, including Kittur Rani Chennamma and Babruvahana. Her passing is a great loss to the film industry and the nation. May her soul rest in peace and may God grant her family and fans the strength to bear this grief,' he said.

Chhattisgarh deports 30 undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh on Tuesday deported 30 Bangladeshi nationals following an ongoing verification exercise in the state, with the individuals being sent back to their homeland. The undocumented Bangladeshi migrants were taken by flight to Guwahati, where they will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF), a police officer said. After initiating the necessary action and completing the process of deportation, all illegal immigrants will be sent across the border into the neighbouring country. The thirty immigrants found staying 'without valid documents' were traced from the districts of Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Raigarh. They were apprehended following intelligence inputs and some complaints received from local inhabitants about the foreigners staying illegally. According to a senior intelligence officer, some Bangladeshis had even procured Indian passports in Chhattisgarh, travelled to their country, and returned to the state. On Tuesday, the issue of Bangladeshi and Rohingya undocumented immigrants was raised by senior BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar in the House, claiming that their strength is consistently on the rise in different districts of the state. Chandrakar claimed that illegal immigrants are accessing the benefits of government schemes after they secured documents illegally on the basis of 'false documentation' and the official machinery failing to enforce stringent regulations.

Learn sand art from legend? IGNOU launches free online course by Padma Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik; Details here
In a first-of-its-kind move in India, IGNOU has joined hands with world-famous sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik to launch two free online sand art courses. These are now available on the government's SWAYAM platform . The courses, "Introduction to Sand Art" and "Principles and Formats of Sand Art", have been fully designed and taught by Pattnaik himself, IGNOU announced in an official statement on Tuesday. Open to All Ages and Backgrounds These online courses are open to learners of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. The aim is to promote Indian art globally and help people build creativity through structured digital learning. At the launch event held at IGNOU headquarters, Vice Chancellor Uma Kanjilal said, 'This is the first time structured sand art courses are being offered in India. It reflects the goals of NEP 2020 to include Indian Knowledge Systems and art forms in mainstream education.' Live Events Pattnaik's Dream Now a Reality Sudarsan Pattnaik said this launch was part of his long-time dream to make sand art a global symbol of Indian talent. 'With IGNOU and SWAYAM, thousands of learners can now learn sand art from anywhere in the world,' he said. The Indian External Affairs Minister added: 'The UN Security Council, of which some of us are currently members, issued a statement that condemned it in the strongest terms and underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice. We have since done exactly that and will continue doing so.' 'The three evils that SCO was founded to combat were terrorism, separatism and extremism. Not surprisingly, they often occur together. Recently, we in India witnessed a graphic example in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. It was deliberately conducted to undermine the tourism economy of Jammu and Kashmir, while sowing a religious divide,' Jaishankar said in his remarks during the meeting. New Delhi: The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) must be 'uncompromising' in its fight against 'terrorism, separatism and extremism'. That was External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's message at the foreign ministers' conference in Tianjin Tuesday, delivered in the presence of Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to China from 14 July till 15 July. He held a number of bilateral meetings with Chinese leaders Monday during his visit to Beijing. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping. Tuesday was the meeting of the foreign ministers in Tianjin, which is set to host the Heads of State summit later this year. This is the first visit by the Indian External Affairs Minister to China since the clashes in Galwan in the summer of 2020. Ties between India and China cratered following the clashes. The political thaw in ties was initiated following the announcement of an agreement to disengage at the friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) last October. 'We will continue to positively approach new ideas and proposals that are genuinely for our collective good. It is essential that such cooperation is based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and in accordance with territorial integrity and sovereignty of member states,' said Jaishankar in his message to the organisation. He is the third Indian leader to visit China in the last month as a part of the different meetings under the SCO umbrella, before the leaders summit later this year. It is one of the few forums where both India and Pakistan interact. Jaishankar's message on terrorism and territorial integrity came a couple of months after the 87-hour conflict between India and Pakistan in May 2025. On 22 April, terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam killed 26 people. India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Islamabad further escalated the situation hitting Indian military infrastructure, which led to the short conflict between the two neighbours. Last month, the defence ministers' meeting of the SCO was unable to reach a consensus for a joint statement because they couldn't agree on the language on terrorism. Pakistan had objected to references regarding the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which led to no joint statement being issued. The Taliban regime has been in control of Afghanistan since 2021. Russia, also a member of the SCO, recently moved to recognise the Taliban-led government in Kabul. 'Afghanistan has been long on the SCO agenda. The compulsions of regional stability are buttressed by our longstanding concern for the well-being of the Afghan people. The international community, particularly SCO members, must therefore step up with development assistance. India, for its part, will certainly do so,' Jaishankar said. With regards to deepening economic collaboration between members of the SCO, Jaishankar pushed for the promotion of the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a transport corridor that links Russia to India via Central Asia. The INSTC is different from China's own Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is President Xi's landmark infrastructure initiative. Jaishankar's promotion of the INSTC, which was envisioned in 2000, marks New Delhi's attempt to suggest an alternative to the BRI.
