Peter Shilton congratulates Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio on breaking record
Fabio, 44, broke Shilton's mark on Tuesday when he played for a 1,391st time in the 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
'Huge congratulations to Fabio Deivson Lopes Maciel for beating my @GWR a record I was proud to hold for over 28 years for the most competitive matches in the history of football,' said Shilton in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
'Keeping the record within the keepers union BRILLIANT achievement Fabio #proud @FIFAcom @FA.'
Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record.
'Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg.
The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement.
'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho.
'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.'
Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semifinals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer.
He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama.
His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense.
Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired, but unlike the former record holder was never capped at senior level.
The 75-year-old 125-times capped Englishman, who was a key member of the Nottingham Forest side that won successive European Cups (1979/80), considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390.

More than 100 Chilean fans arrested after violence in the stands during soccer match in Argentina
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — More than 100 fans were arrested after violence erupted in the stands during a Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile and left at least 20 people injured, one of them in critical condition, local authorities said Thursday. HT Image Images showed two fans jumping, or falling, from the upper deck of the stands to escape the attack, and another collapsed after being hit in the head with a stick. Several other fans, some in their underwear, were covered in blood and trying to evade the attackers. The violence led to the match — which was played Wednesday night at the Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda, a province of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires — being cancelled. 'I strongly condemn the shocking violence which led to the cancellation of the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile,' FIFA's president Gianni Infantino said in a statement. 'Violence has no place in soccer — players, fans, staff, officials and everyone who enjoys our beautiful game should be able to do so without fear.' CONMEBOL, the South America soccer governing body, said Thursday it was investigating the incident. According to Argentine police, the incident began when Universidad de Chile fans, located in the upper stands, tore up seats and the stadium's restrooms and threw blunt objects toward the lower section, where the home fans were located. Police and private security personnel were also attacked. The police did not intervene to control the disturbances, arguing that is was 'preventing a greater damage,' according to the official report. Instead, they warned Chilean fans to stop their behavior through the loudspeakers. As the fans continued to throw projectiles, the match was suspended at halftime with the score at 1-1. Just as the Universidad fans were leaving the stands, hooded Independiente supporters broke down doors to enter the visitors' section. There, they attacked the visitors with sticks and metal bars. Two of them, cornered, climbed over the side and either jumped or fell, according to images captured by witnesses' cell phones. One of them, identified as Gonzalo Alfaro, required surgery and is in critical condition, according to the medical report from the Fiorito Hospital in Buenos Aires. Eighteen other Chilean fans were hospitalized, most with multiple injuries. 'Nothing justifies a lynching. Nothing,' Chilean President Gabriel Boric said on X. Local authorities reported that 125 fans of the Chilean club were arrested for assault and resisting arrest. Of those, 101 remained under arrest, according to the Chilean Foreign Ministry. Boric instructed Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde to travel to Buenos Aires and stated that he would work to 'protect the rights' of the affected Chileans. It is the latest violent incident in South American soccer competitions. Last April, Chile's Colo Colo was deducted points and received a financial penalty after two fans were killed during the match against Fortaleza of Brazil in the first round of the Copa Libertadores. In recent weeks, there have also been reports of clashes between Argentine fans and police in stadiums in Brazil and Uruguay. ___ AP soccer:

PSG Boss Makes Big Prediction About Ousmane Dembele: 'I Hope This Year...'
Last Updated: The 28-year-old Dembele stepped out of the shadow of former PSG star Kylian Mbappe last season, playing a crucial role in their Champions League victory. Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique is convinced forward Ousmane Dembele can improve on his 2024–25 season when he led PSG to a treble win and became one of the leading Ballon d'Or contenders. The 28-year-old Dembele stepped out of the shadow of former PSG star Kylian Mbappe last season, playing a crucial role in their Champions League victory and continuing to impress in the Club World Cup, where PSG finished as runners-up. Dembele, who scored 35 goals and made 16 assists last season, kept PSG alive in last week's UEFA Super Cup by setting up Goncalo Ramos' 94th-minute equaliser before new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier earned praise for his saves in their penalty shootout win over Tottenham Hotspur. 'I think this season is a big challenge for Ousmane. Last year was incredible, yet I am convinced that he can improve his performance, without a doubt," Luis Enrique said ahead of Friday's home game against Angers. 'You have to be very brave to say that (about Dembele), but I think he has got the level. He is a really important player for us. He has quality in attack and also in defence. I can see how happy he is; I hope this year will be even better." The club will also present their five trophies (Ligue 1, French Cup, Champions League, French Super Cup, and UEFA Super Cup) in front of the home crowd. 'It's very important for us to see our fans again and return to the Parc des Princes after 10 away matches. We've really missed the stadium and the fans. We know that the atmosphere always makes a difference," Luis Enrique said. When asked whether the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine had caused any issues in the dressing room, with PSG's squad now featuring Russian second-choice goalkeeper Matvei Safonov and Ukrainian defender Zabarnyi, Luis Enrique said football brought people together. 'Football is the best way to bring people together and create unity, not separation," he said. 'Sports and people come before the political or economic interests of politicians." Eberechi Eze To Arsenal: Reliving The 7 Best Hijacks In Premier League History
Number 7, Arjen Robben to Chelsea (2004): After visiting Old Trafford and meeting the legendary Alex Ferguson, Robben seemed destined for United. But Chelsea's then-CEO Peter Kenyon convinced him with a bigger package. The Dutch winger lit up Stamford Bridge instead of Manchester. (AFP) Number 6, Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United (2008): Manchester City had made a bold bid, but Berbatov was clear that he only wanted United. This time, Ferguson personally greeted him at the airport to seal the deal. Spurs gave in, selling him for a then-club-record £30.75m to Old Trafford. (AFP) Number 5, Robinho to Manchester City (2008): Chelsea were confident of signing Robinho until Manchester City's new owners shocked the world. On deadline day, they broke the British transfer record with a £32.5m bid. Robinho even admitted he thought he was joining Manchester United, highlighting the chaos of the move. (AFP) Roy Keane to Manchester United (1993): Blackburn had agreed terms with Keane and awaited paperwork when Ferguson stepped in. United moved swiftly, offering better wages and convincing him within two days. Keane went on to become one of United's greatest captains and fiercest midfielders. (AFP) Eberechi Eze to Arsenal (2025): This is a deal that's all but official. Tottenham agreed broad terms with both Palace and the player, believing they had landed Eze and were waiting for him to say his goodbyes, only for Arsenal to swoop in with a £67.5m offer. The player's childhood affinity for the Gunners proved decisive in the hijack. The move has left Spurs stunned, as they will now watch their target cross North London. (AFP) John Obi Mikel to Chelsea (2005): One of the most sensational twists till date. Mikel (C) posed in a Manchester United shirt after agreeing a deal, but Chelsea contested the transfer. A long legal battle followed, with the London club eventually paying compensation to United and Lyn Oslo. The saga ended with Mikel moving to Stamford Bridge, where he stayed for a decade. (AFP) 7/7 Willian to Chelsea (2013): Willian (R) had completed his Spurs medical and was ready to sign, but Chelsea swooped in at the eleventh hour. Liverpool had shown strong interest too, yet Roman Abramovich's personal push sealed the move. Daniel Levy was left furious as the Brazilian became a Stamford Bridge regular. (AFP)
