Bengaluru City Police roll out secure in-house app exclusive for cops' use

India Today16-05-2025

In a move to enhance internal communication, the Bengaluru City Police have developed and deployed their own messaging application, tailored exclusively for use by police officers across the city. The app, reportedly being referred internally as BCPChat, has been in development for the past three to four months and has been in active use for the last 15 days.Bengaluru Commissioner of Police B Dayananda officially announced the launch of the app today.advertisementAccording to officials, the app replicates the core functions of common messaging platforms — such as sending individual and group messages, sharing audio, video, images, and document files including PDFs — but is specifically customised for police operations. It is described as clutter-free and designed with strict security protocols in place.
One of its standout features is a broadcast function, which allows the department to send messages of general interest to all officers at once. This is intended to support faster and more efficient dissemination of updates and instructions. The app also includes a built-in search engine, enabling users to retrieve previous messages, documents, and other stored information. Importantly, all communication is stored on servers hosted at the Karnataka State Data Centre, rather than on individual devices. This ensures data security and allows for easy retrieval of historical information.advertisementThe app is being used for day-to-day updates such as VIP movements, media briefings, Daily Crime Reports (DCRs), Daily Situation Reports (DSRs), and official communication including government orders and circulars.'We already started using it. It is in the process of improvement, but we have started using it for the last 15 days, and the development has been going on for the past 3 to 4 months,' an official in the police department said.
