WATCH: Gautam Gambhir delivers powerful message to Team India after Oval Test win

Indian Express07-08-2025
After India's exhilarating six-run victory at the Oval to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2, India coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a simple message for his players about team culture, something which he is a big proponent of.
'The way this series has panned out 2-2 is an outstanding result, congratulations to all. So remember, we will keep getting better, we will keep working hard, we will keep improving our areas – because if we keep doing that, we can dominate Test cricket for a very long period. People will come and go, but the culture of the dressing room should always be like that people want to be part of this culture, that is what we want to create,' Gambhir said in a Dressing Room BTS video shared by the BCCI.
Gambhir then went on to add: 'Good luck, enjoy yourself. You can take a couple of days off, and you deserve every bit of it. What you guys have achieved, you deserve every bit of it. Congratulations.'
Gambhir's speech comes after the young Test team, led by first-time captain Shubman Gill gave an impressive account of itself despite missing veteran stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The clip also showed Ravindra Jadeja hand over the Impact Player of the Series medal to Washington Sundar for his outstanding performance on the tour. Sundar finished the series with 284 runs, including an unbeaten 101 match-saving knock at Old Trafford in Manchester.
'Obviously, it is a great blessing to be playing four games on the trot in a place like England. Always wanted to do really well here. And as a team, just the way we went about, every single day was amazing. The energy we created especially from a fielding perspective, the energy we created, we were always there for each other. Thank you so much for everything,' Sudar said of his successful England tour.

Only way I see Jadeja getting injured is doing a rotator cuff via his celebration, says Lee

Ravindra Jadeja's trademark sword-swinging celebration has been a common sight on the cricketing field. But former Australia pacer Brett Lee has cautioned the veteran all-rounder in pulling off the celebration, saying he is at the risk of injuring his rotator cuff muscle. Jadeja amassed 516 runs in the drawn 2-2 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series against England, including hitting five half-centuries and one hundred. 'The thing with Jadeja, the only way I see him getting injured is doing a rotator cuff with his, the way he does a sword celebration. So, I love it. Look after your body. Don't celebrate too hard,' said Lee on his YouTube channel on Sunday. Jadeja retired from T20Is after India's T20 World Cup win last year. But he continues to remain a force to reckon with in Tests and ODIs for India. Lee, the former Australian speedster went on to shower praise on Jadeja, and predicted he will go on to play 100 Test matches for India. 'Another sort of 15 Tests, it's about two years. I think he'll go past the 100 mark. I think he's one of the best all-rounders that we've seen. 36 years of age, he's still got a good couple of years left in him.' 'The term we like to use, factory-made cricketer. He has everything that a cricketer needs, and I think he ticks every single box. He does the basics right, he's got a simple technique, no fuss. He runs in and bowls accurately, he bowls the correct line and length when needed, and gets through his overs quickly.' '36 years of age, but the fittest. He's the fittest in the team, he covers a lot of ground, and he prides himself on being the fittest. That is probably the reason why he never shies away from those big moments. He likes to be in the game, he's an entertainer, and he's probably one of the factory cricketers that if you put everything into a mix, throw it into a bucket, mix all up, pick out your best cricketer, Jadeja will be at the top of the list,' he concluded.

Jasprit Bumrah 'won't play too many Tests, but don't push him towards retirement': 'He's going to pick and choose'

Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra reckons Jasprit Bumrah won't play too many Tests going ahead. However, he also cautioned every stakeholder in Indian cricket against pushing Bumrah into early and premature retirement. Ever since the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Bumrah has been facing flak for not playing all the Tests in the five-match series. Aakash Chopra reckons Jasprit Bumrah won't play too many Tests(Action Images via Reuters) Even before the series against England began, it was public knowledge that Bumrah would play just three Tests. The 31-year-old played the first, third, and fourth Tests. The pacer returned with 17 wickets; however, India won the two Tests in which Bumrah didn't feature in the playing XI. In the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Mohammed Siraj bowled close to 186 overs, picking up 23 wickets. The pacer kept charging in, and Siraj's workhorse-like ability has led to several former India players criticising Bumrah and asking the team management to look beyond him if he cannot play all the games. However, Chopra reckons Jasprit Bumrah is a pure diamond and hence he should get special treatment. He also said that the No.1-ranked Test bowler should be allowed the luxury of picking and choosing. "There is no bowler like Bumrah. Don't push him forcibly towards early retirement because he is 24-carat pure gold. He is the Kohinoor diamond. The longer he plays, the better it is. I don't think he will play too much Test cricket, but for however long he plays, I would say hold onto it,' said Chopra on his YouTube channel. Also Read: Jasprit Bumrah updates Ajit Agarkar about his Asia Cup status ahead of team selection 'I will be honest, I don't think he will play all the Test matches. He is going to pick and choose. Whether it's right or wrong, it's not a moral or ethical debate, is what I think. If you have a player of that level available, play him whenever he can,' he added. 'Bowlers need to be rotated' Chopra feels it would have been a problem had Bumrah been a batter and there was no continuity in batting. However, considering Bumrah is a pacer, Chopra asked for a more flexible approach, asking the team management to opt to rotate the bowling attack. 'Jasprit Bumrah, as a bowler, you can adjust the bowling combination very easily. It doesn't make a difference. If Bumrah had been a batter, a No. 4 or an opener, and had said that he would play two matches and won't play after that, then it's a problem. Bowlers need to be rotated in any case in a series of three or four Tests,' said Chopra. According to a report in the Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available for the upcoming Asia Cup, which begins September 9. The selectors will pick the squad on Tuesday, August 19, in Mumbai.

Criticism will come and go, but winning matters: Shardul Thakur defends Gautam Gambhir

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has faced relentless criticism since taking charge, particularly regarding the Test format. Despite a promising start with a clean sweep against Bangladesh, India's long home dominance came to an end when they suffered a series defeat against New Zealand. The disappointment deepened after India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, which also cost them a place in the World Test Championship setbacks were compounded by the retirement of senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, leaving the team in transition. Many critics have questioned Gambhir's approach and whether he can build a squad capable of thriving in the longest all-rounder Shardul Thakur has thrown his weight behind the coach, insisting that Gambhir's qualities and fighting spirit are exactly what the team needs. Thakur highlighted Gambhir's decorated playing career and his ability to inspire the dressing room, both during practice and in pressure situations. 'Yes, we have always seen him as a player who is willing to fight for the team, and even during the huddles, he transferred that energy into us — the one that he brought into the field during his playing days,' Thakur said in an interview with Revsportz.'He is an achiever who has won trophies for the nation and the state. And he brings all those experiences and motivations into the team. Criticism will come and go, but as a team, winning matters, and I believe we are heading in the right direction when it comes to that,' he pointed to India's spirited display during the recent England tour as an example of Gambhir's influence, stressing that the never-give-up attitude instilled by the coach was evident in the side's ahead, Gambhir's immediate challenge will be the upcoming Asia Cup. With the squad yet to be announced, there is curiosity around whether he will experiment with fresh faces or rely on the experienced core of India's T20 setup. Regardless of his choices, the scrutiny is unlikely to fade, but his players remain convinced that Gambhir is the right man to guide India forward.- EndsTune InMust Watch
