Khuwair Square Project inaugurated in Muscat's Ministries District
MUSCAT: The Khuwair Square project was officially inaugurated in the Ministries District of Muscat, spanning an area of over 21,000 square meters. The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat.
The project features more than 9,000 square meters of lush green spaces, dedicated walking and cycling paths extending 435 meters, multiple seating areas, and a café with an open-air rooftop operated by Omani entrepreneurs. Additionally, the square includes public facilities and parking, making it an ideal destination for leisure, relaxation, and outdoor activities.
Architectural elements reflecting Omani identity have been incorporated into the design, including traditional _Mashrabiya_ patterns, locally sourced _Desert Rose_ marble, and Nizwa stone.
A striking feature of the square is a towering flagpole standing 126 meters high, constructed using 141 tons of steel, with the Omani flag measuring 25 meters in length and 44 meters in width waving above.
Speaking at the inauguration, His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi described the project as a significant addition to Muscat's public spaces, symbolizing both tradition and modernity.
'We hope this square will serve as a vibrant recreational space and a key attraction that enriches Muscat's urban landscape, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike," he stated. "It aligns with the governorate's vision to foster social connections and human-centered urban planning.'
Meanwhile, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Hamidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, highlighted the project's role in shaping sustainable and dynamic public spaces that meet the aspirations of the community while integrating natural elements and Omani heritage.

Military Hajj Mission returns home
Muscat: The military Hajj mission returned home on Tuesday after performing this year's Hajj pilgrimage in the Holy Land. Upon arrival at Al Seeb Air Base, the mission was received by Maj. Gen (retired) Hamad Sulaiman Al Hatmi, along with several senior officers from the Sultan's Armed Forces and other military and security units. The military Hajj mission returned aboard several transport aircraft of the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO). The delegation included a number of pilgrims and administrative personnel from the Sultan's Armed Forces and other military and security units. All members of the mission performed the Hajj rituals with ease and returned in good health. The dispatch of the military Hajj mission comes under the directives of His Majesty the Supreme Commander and is organised annually by the Moral Guidance and Military Protocol Department of the Sultan's Armed Forces. Comprehensive administrative and health measures related to the mission were implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, the Omani Hajj Mission, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Sultanate of Oman, and other relevant authorities. Oman marks World Oceans Day, renews pledge to protect marine environment
Muscat - On the occasion of World Oceans Day (which falls on 8 June every year), the Sultanate of Oman highlights efforts on protecting the marine environment and promoting ecological sustainability. Oman is considered a leading country in this field. Oman boasts a long coastline of approximately 3,165 kilometres that makes the country home to a rich biodiversity of coral reefs, seabirds, fish and rare and endangered species like sea turtles. Oman is actively seeking to preserve its marine environment through a set of elaborate initiatives and policies. The Environment Authority was established to act as the body responsible for developing environmental strategies, notably in the field of protecting oceans and coasts. The Environment Authority conducts studies and research aimed at understanding common environmental challenges posed by the marine environment like pollution, overfishing and climate change. As part of its efforts to promote marine sustainability, Oman keeps implementing a variety of projects, including the "Artificial Coral Reefs" project, which aims to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, enhance biodiversity, support sustainable fishing and protect coastal areas. Oman has also established a number of marine reserves like Ras Al Jinz Marine Reserve, the Daymaniyat Islands Marine Reserve, and Al Khor Marine Reserve, which all provide safe sanctuary for endangered marine species. Oman's efforts also include awareness campaigns and workshops aimed at raising and developing the knowledge of citizens and residents about the importance of preserving marine life. In particular, such initiatives target younger generations, encouraging them to actively contribute to environment conservation efforts. Oman also accords attention to international cooperation in the field of marine environment protection. This attention takes shape in Oman's regular participation in relavamt global programmes and agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity. Through this comprehensive approach,—which combines effective policies, innovative projects and community engagement—the Sultanate of Oman sets an exemplary model for marine environment protection.
