McGregor relishing ‘special occasion' as Celtic prepare to face Cork City

STV News5 days ago
Callum McGregor is relishing Celtic's first meeting with Cork City in 16 years as Brendan Rodgers' side step up preparations for the new season with a pre-season friendly at the city's 45,000-capacity GAA stadium Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
A makeshift Hoops side enjoyed a 1-0 win over Queen's Park on Friday and some of their more established players are set to get their first outing of the summer in Ireland on Tuesday.
Captain McGregor is looking forward to leading his side out in front of their Irish fan base.
'Obviously, it's been a while since we've been in that part of Ireland,' he said. 'It feels so nice to come over and see the fans, let everybody see you in the flesh and hopefully give the best version of ourselves while we prepare for another long season.
'We're all looking forward to it. It's a special stadium and we want to go there and put on a show, just show the best of ourselves and hopefully have that connection with the supporters as well.
'When we get to come over (to Ireland) and see everyone in person, then it's always a special occasion. We just want to come over and try and give the best.'
Celtic's three Irish players – defender Liam Scales and forwards Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny – are all in the frame to feature in their homeland.
'The expectation at Celtic is enormous for the local lads and for the Irish lads as well that come over, there's a huge expectation,' said McGregor. 'I think everyone in Ireland would give their right hand to play for Celtic so straight away there's a huge expectation, a huge demand on the guys that come.
'They need a little bit of time to adapt and accept that pressure but I think the boys who have done it have done it amazingly well and are a really strong part of the squad, so that's testament to them.'

Russell Martin's Rangers high wire act exploited as fans all say the same thing

A slack pass from new signing Emmanuel Fernandez showed the risks of playing a high line as Barnsley take advantage A week's training camp at St George's Park was rounded off by Rangers with a 1-1 draw against Barnsley. Russell Martin has been working on his squad's fitness at the England training HQ just outside Burton upon Trent and finished up with a closed door game against the League One outfit. ‌ More are scheduled before the crunch Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos and fans are glad, given what they saw against the Tykes. ‌ Danilo looked to have won it for Gers with a smart finish, but the Yorkshire side levelled up late on and it was the manner of the goal that had fans concerned. Martin's preference is to play a high line, and one slack pass from Emmanuel Fernandez saw the Light Blues left dangerously exposed as Max Watters was sent racing through on goal with a simple ball through the middle of the pushed up back line. Liam Kelly came charging out and got nowhere near either player or the ball as Watters skipped round him and rolled into an empty net. With such a big game on the horizon and only the prospect of bounce games behind closed doors to warm up for it, fans are starting to display some pre-season nerves. One replied with: "I'm afraid the goal we conceded we'll see a few of them this season. Another added: "We will ship goals all season leaving the back wide open like that," and another said: "Apparently Martin's tactics run the risk of this happening because of our line. Hopefully it shouldn't be a major issue if we can outscore teams or keep them held up in their own half." ‌ That was echoed by a fellow fan: "Defensively were all over the place exactly what was said would happen when Martin came in. Was said that defensively he doesn't have a clue which is wild considering he was a defender really confident now." Scotland star spotted at TRNSMT among 50 Cent crowd

Scotland national star Billy Gilmour was spotted at Glasgow Green to watch the US rapper perform on Friday evening A famous Scots footballer was spotted yesterday at Glasgow Green enjoying the first day of TRNSMT as rapper 50 Cent took to the stage to perform. Ex-Rangers star Billy Gilmour, who now plays for Napoli, was seen in the crowd watching the US rapper play the first headline set of the weekend, Glasgow Live reports. The 50-year-old Candy Shop hitmaker was the closing performance of the first evening of the three day festival in the city with a performance which included a backdrop of neon signs with images including lollipops and 50 Cent coins. The star got the crowd going wild as he performed all of his best hits over an hour and a half period with a series of dancers. ‌ Unfortunately for Billy, 50 Cent has already previously pledged his loyalty to Celtic FC as he shared his hopes of paying a visit to Parkhead after being inspired by his good friend, Gerard Butler. Paisley born actor Butler and the In Da Club rapper starred together in the 2018 blockbuster Den of Thieves and became good pals during filming. According to 50, the Scots actor's love for the Hoops was impossible to ignore. ‌ According to SunSport, the rapper said: 'Man, Gerard is crazy about Celtic. I don't think I have ever met somebody more in love with their team. "We are going to watch a Celtic game together. That guy won't miss a game even when he's shooting. He must go up another level when he's actually at the stadium.' The rapper added: 'If I went to watch a game in Scotland, it would have to be Celtic. ‌ "He would never forgive me if I went to watch anybody else.' Other acts to perform on the Friday included James Bay, Twin Atlantic, Wet Leg, Jamie Webster, School Boy Q, Callum Bowie and The Script. ‌ The high temperatures of up to 29C are set to continue over the course of the weekend with festival goers being warned to stay hydrated and top up with suncream throughout the day. 50 Cent reportedly made a stop in the city centre to enjoy a bite to eat and a game of bowling ahead of his TRNSMT show. The Get Rich Or Die Tryin' star, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, made a stop in Vega on Argyle Street on Thursday evening after staying in a newly refurbished hotel in the city centre. ‌ 50 enjoyed the luxe bowling space all night scoring "strike after strike" according to a fan who spotted the US megastar. The rapper reportedly ordered crispy fried chicken, mac and cheese and skin on fries courtesy of Vega's brand new chef Garry Rae. The fan who spotted him said: "We couldn't believe it was really him, we had to do a double-take. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Daizen Maeda is priceless Celtic crown jewel they can't sell if Brendan the builder is to get them up to spec

Maeda is now into the final couple of years of his contract and the Hoops could do with bolstering their insurance policy It could be that Daizen Maeda is just a hard man to pin down. Ask Premiership defenders how tough it is to shackle him. Perhaps it's the same for Celtic chiefs when it comes to this new contract offer that is due to be drafted. ‌ Maybe Maeda has been in too much of a hurry in pre-season, building up the kind of super-human levels of fitness that get him through a campaign. ‌ But this is an important part of the Any Other Business Celtic do need to get done – and sharpish. It might be like refuelling a jet plane while in the air, but, either way, they need to dock with the attacker and get pen on paper sooner rather than later. Maeda is now into the final couple of years of his contract and the Hoops could do with bolstering their insurance policy with the Japan star. Yes, it's been a bit quiet in terms of speculation surrounding his future. Maybe too quiet. Given the form he showed last season, a stampede was expected outside Parkhead. Brendan Rodgers admitted himself a few weeks before the end of term he was fully braced for serious interest in Scotland's player of the year. ‌ The bids haven't landed yet but that doesn't mean they won't come. Supporters are running around with their hair on fire demanding multi-million pound signings, but in reality, there is a long way left in the transfer window and a heck of a lot that can happen. And that includes vultures circling Celtic's top assets. ‌ A few months ago plenty of punters would have been resigned to seeing Maeda go this summer. He's done a decent stint of three and a half years, another challenge would come along, probably with more money, and that would be it. Sayonara. It would break a few hearts but he'd depart a hero and leave a legacy – in exchange for a huge pot of money. ‌ But that was before Nicolas Kuhn jumped ship. The German clearing out for Como was a fine piece of business given the winger's slightly sulky second half of the season. Yet he was still a major part of the side and is a big loss from a playing perspective. Meanwhile, it might sound harsh, but Celtic need to forget about Jota for the foreseeable. ‌ Who knows when he is going to be fully operational again. The winger was just about getting there after 18 months twiddling his thumbs in Saudi Arabia and France. Chuck in another year on the sidelines and it's going to be a long way back for the Portuguese. ‌ If he can get back on the pitch and look effective in a few games before the end of the season he'll be doing well. And that takes it back to Maeda. Celtic might have been ready to consider selling him for the right price. Now? There is no right price. Celtic simply cannot afford to sell Maeda. ‌ That's why they need to dangle a big juicy contract under his nose – even if it convinces him to stick around for another season. Another big name departure would further take the legs away from a manager who has already had to lose Matt O'Riley, Kyogo and now Kuhn. Rodgers knows how it works at Celtic when it comes to cashing in on the crown jewels. ‌ The crucial part is timing and shifting two of them in the same window is not part of the deal. Rodgers returned because he wanted to build something at the club but it's a tough gig when the foundations get whipped out every time the window opens up. In the meantime, the focus will all be on new signings and Celtic fans will be cranking up the pressure on their club to splash the cash. ‌ It's understandable. They've stuck more than £20million in the coffers in season book sales this summer and the Hoops have also pocketed £17m for Kuhn. There's been another couple for Gustaf Lagerbielke and a chunk from Jeremie Frimpong's sell-on clause. They've only spent spare change so far so it's once again coming up to chequebook time for Celts. But a decent whack of the dough should be on the table for Daizen.
