The mothers were all high risk for passing on life-threatening diseases to their babies due to mutations in their mitochondria, the tiny structures that sit inside cells and provide the power they need to function.
News of the births and the children's health has been long-anticipated by doctors around the world after the UK changed the law to allow the procedure in 2015. The fertility regulator granted the first licence in 2017 to a fertility clinic at Newcastle University where doctors pioneered the technique.
The four boys and four girls, including one set of identical twins, were born to seven women and have no signs of the mitochondrial diseases they were at risk of inheriting. One further pregnancy is ongoing.

Prof Doug Turnbull, who was part of the team that spent more than two decades developing the procedure, said the healthy births were reassuring for researchers and the families affected. 'You are inevitably thinking it's great for the patients and that is a relief,' he said.
Prof Mary Herbert, another senior member of the team, said to have eight healthy babies from the procedure was 'rewarding for all of us'.
The vast majority of a human's 20,000 genes are curled up in the nucleus of nearly every cell in the body. But the fluid surrounding the nucleus contains hundreds to thousands of mitochondria that carry their own set of 37 genes. Mutations in these genes can impair or completely disable mitochondria with catastrophic effects.
People inherit all their mitochondria from their biological mother. Mutations in the tiny battery-like structures can affect all the children a woman has.
The first symptoms of mitochondrial disease tend to appear in early childhood as energy-hungry organs such as the brain, heart and muscles start to fail. Many affected children have developmental delays, require wheelchairs and die young. About one in 5,000 newborns are affected.
Mitochondrial donation treatment, or MDT, aims to prevent children from inheriting mutated mitochondria. The procedure involves fertilising the mother's egg with the father's sperm and then transferring the genetic material from the nucleus into a fertilised healthy donor egg that has had its own nucleus removed. This creates a fertilised egg with a full set of chromosomes from the parents, but healthy mitochondria from the donor. The egg is then implanted into the womb to establish a pregnancy.
The first eight babies born to the procedure are described in two papers in the New England Journal of Medicine. All eight were healthy at birth. One child developed a urinary infection that was treated, and another developed muscle jerks that resolved on their own. A third child developed high blood fat and a disturbance in their heart rhythm, which was also treated. The condition is thought to be related to a medical issue the mother had in pregnancy.
Genetic tests showed that the babies had no or low levels of mutant mitochondria, with some carried over from the mother during the procedure. While the levels are considered too low to cause disease, it suggests the procedure could still be improved.
Some women who carry the genetic disorders produce eggs with varying levels of faulty mitochondria. For them, a technique called pre-implantation genetic testing can be used to select eggs for IVF that have a very low chance of passing on a disease. Medical schools have announced changes to the entry requirements for studying medicine following concerns that some students may have found a way to practise for aptitude tests known as the Hpat, or Health Professions Admission Test. Under the admissions process for medical schools, applicants are required to combine their Leaving Certificate results with those from the Hpat which was introduced in 2009 to assess skills deemed important for medicine. While the 2½-hour test was initially envisaged as one which candidates could not study for, there is now an extensive private tuition industry where students can spend up to €800 over 15 weeks to prepare for the assessment. For example, a student who gets 500 points in the Leaving Cert and 200 points in the Hpat gets a combined score of 700 points. About 3,000 students take the test each year, which is required to study undergraduate medicine at the University of Galway, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, UCC and UCD. University of Limerick also requires the Hpat for entry to its master's degree in occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. Under the revised plans, the maximum points the Hpat can deliver is to be reduced to 150 points. The changes are being announced now for the 2027 intake to allow potential applicants to make choices in advance of their two-year Leaving Certificate cycle. The changes will not affect those sitting their Leaving Certificates in 2025 or 2026. The Hpat was introduced under then minister for education Mary Hanafin , following concern that only those scoring very high Leaving Cert points were guaranteed entry to medicine. She said at the time that students would no longer need a 'perfect Leaving Cert' to enter medicine. However, concern grew that students who are able to afford extra support for their exams and Hpat tests are at a significant advantage when it comes to studying medicine. Latest Higher Education Authority data, for example, show about 33 per cent of medicine students are from affluent backgrounds, compared with 18 per cent of students overall. Only 3 per cent of medicine students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, compared to 11 per cent overall. Announcing the modifications on Friday, the Irish Universities Association said the primary requirement to present both the Leaving Certificate result and Hpat result for the calculation of points for medicine will not change. Leaving Certificate points above 550 will no longer be moderated, and the maximum possible Hpat points will be reduced from 300 to 150.' From 2027, the maximum combined Leaving Certificate and Hpat points for Medicine will be 775, being 625 from the Leaving Certificate and 150 from the Hpat. This will differ from the current maximum of 865 points made up of 565 points from the Leaving Certificate and 300 from the Hpat. The existing rule that the Hpat must be taken in the year of Cental Applications Office application will continue. The 'greed' of the greyhound industry is the reason for a 'barbaric and invasive' surgery, a TD has claimed. Sinn Féin's Dessie Ellis has called for a ban on surgical artificial insemination of greyhounds, which he said is already banned in countries like the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands. The Dublin North-West TD said it was 'not an isolated practice' and figures for the 10 years up to 2023 showed almost 5,000 greyhound litters were born in Ireland following this procedure. He added that 'in the last four years alone, over 500 surgical artificial inseminations were performed on racing and coursing greyhounds'. Raising the issue in the Dáil on Wednesday he said the procedure involves 'anaesthetising the female greyhound and making a small incision in her abdomen in order to lift the uterus out and inject semen directly into the uterus. Mr Ellis pointed to the view of the British Veterinary Association that 'this practice is highly unethical' and very painful for greyhounds 'because the subsequent pregnancy will put additional pressure on the abdominal wounds'. Greyhounds' lives are being put at risk by 'this non-vital surgical procedure' Mr Ellis added. Minister of State Robert Troy, replying on behalf of Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon said the results will be published 'in due course' and 'will contribute to the legislative process'. Mr Ellis said this is a 'question of cruelty to animals, animal rights' and it is 'just not good enough to allow it drag on'. Mr Troy said the department 'is closely examining this issue and will be providing advice on the appropriate course of action in the near future'. The Minister added that the department takes its responsibility for animal welfare 'most seriously'. The Cabinet in March 2023 approved the report of a working group on the control of dogs recommending the prohibition of the practice in all breeds of dogs, he said. The Government's support for the greyhound industry is contingent on a guarantee of welfare standards being upheld by Rásaíocht Con Éireann (Greyhound Racing Ireland), he added. A minimum of 10 per cent of State funding for the agency, which has responsibility for the greyhound industry, is ring-fenced for animal welfare. Since 2019, it has spent €19.3 million on traceability care and welfare and a traceability system came into operation in January last year. 'The system provides a mechanism to ensure racing greyhounds are properly registered and traceable throughout their lives,' Mr Troy said.
