India's headline inflation likely to average 3.5% in FY26: Crisil
In its research report for August, the rating agency said that healthy agricultural production is likely to keep food inflation in check.
The kharif sowing is up a healthy four per cent year-on-year as of August 8.
"We expect headline inflation to average 3.5 per cent this fiscal from 4.6 per cent in the last," Crisil said in its research report.
Headline inflation is defined as a rise in prices of all items in the CPI, including food and energy.
Assuming geopolitical uncertainties remain under control, Brent crude oil prices are projected to be subdued at USD60 to USD65 per barrel in the current financial year, which should help contain non-food inflation, the report said.
Crisil said another bout of repo cut is expected this fiscal. A cumulative cut of 100 basis points so far, along with adequate liquidity, has ensured a swift transmission down the line.
India's retail inflation rate has more than halved over the past year, slipping even below the lower end of the Reserve Bank of India's tolerance band of two per cent. It slid to 1.6 per cent in July from 2.1 per cent in June.
The sharp fall in retail inflation should buoy household purchasing power, particularly in the lower-income segments. This will create room for further monetary policy easing, the report added.

Rupee trades weak with US-Russia meeting in focus; opens at 87.46/$
The Indian rupee traded slightly lower on Thursday amid rising oil prices, after logging its strongest session in over a month a day earlier. The domestic currency opened 2 paise lower at 87.46 against the greenback on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. The domestic currency rose 28 paise, or 0.32 per cent, in the previous session. The rupee has depreciated by 2.25 per cent in the current financial year so far, whereas it has weakened by 2.09 per cent in the current calendar year so far. However, the local currency has witnessed 0.18 per cent appreciation in August so far. The domestic currency closed higher on constant selling by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at 87.73 levels and had closed higher at 87.44 against the dollar, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net sellers in the equity market but bought some debt following the recent market decline, Bhansali said. Global funds have been net sellers of ₹18,710 crore so far this month. With expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate cut pulling the dollar index lower, the rupee could gradually strengthen towards 87.00, depending on the outcome of Friday's US–Russia summit, Bhansali said. "Exporters are advised to sell near 87.75 if the level reappears, as the RBI has been protecting it, while importers should wait to hedge and buy on dips for cash and near-term payments." Trump warned Putin of "very severe consequences" if the Russian leader didn't agree to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned that the current 25 per cent secondary tariff on India could increase if the Trump-Putin meeting fails to make headway. Further, Bessent urged the Federal Reserve to cut half-point interest in the September meeting, amid reports that Trump might select a new Fed Chair sooner than expected. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.09 per cent at 97.75. In commodities, crude oil rose but was near a two-month low after the International Energy Agency said the market is on track for record oversupply next year. Brent crude price was up 0.41 per cent at 65.90 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were higher by 0.41 per cent at 62.91, as of 9:17 AM IST.

Generative AI adoption surge: Banking sector set for efficiency leap by nearly 46%
AI image Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) could enhance banking operations in India by as much as 46%, according to a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report. As per news agency ANI, the central bank said AI could help financial institutions better understand customers, operate more efficiently, and deliver personalised services at scale. 'GenAI is poised to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent,' the RBI noted in its assessment, highlighting that AI adoption in financial services is accelerating to meet varied needs such as enhancing customer experience, improving employee productivity, increasing revenue, cutting costs, ensuring compliance, and driving innovation. As per the report, Generative AI is emerging as a game-changer, using advanced analytics to interpret customer behaviour, strengthen risk management, and streamline expenses. It also pointed to AI-powered alternative credit scoring models that are widening access to credit for people underserved by conventional banking systems. In India, where millions remain outside the formal banking network, AI can assess creditworthiness using non-traditional data sources such as utility payments, mobile usage, GST records, and e-commerce transactions. The RBI observed that this technology can help integrate 'thin-file' or 'new-to-credit' customers into the system. The report also highlighted the growing role of AI chatbots, which are transforming customer service by handling routine queries round the clock, resolving issues faster, and freeing up human staff for more complex cases. On a global scale, the use of AI in financial services is expanding rapidly. The RBI estimated that the generative AI market could surpass Rs 1.02 lakh crore (about $12 billion) by 2033, with an annual growth rate of 28–34%. It added that, when applied responsibly, AI can make banking more inclusive, efficient and customer-friendly, while fuelling long-term sector growth. The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 304.32 points or 0.38 per cent to settle at 80,539.91. During the day, it jumped 448.15 points or 0.55 per cent to 80,683.74. The 50-share NSE Nifty edged up by 131.95 points or 0.54 per cent to 24,619.35. Globally, sentiment improved on the extension of China's tariff deadline and easing oil prices. 'Despite uncertainties around Trump's trade stance and global risks, India's growth-inflation dynamics remain favourable for FY26 with risk to marginal downgrade based on tariff updates. India looks forward to the Trump-Putin meet dated 15th August,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. Among Sensex firms, Bharat Electronics, Eternal, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Motors and Power Grid were the gainers.
