Amitabh Kant, bureaucrat behind 'God's Own Country', 'Incredible India', steps down after 45 years of service
NEW DELHI: A bureaucrat par excellence, Amitabh Kant, who has to his credit several first-of-their-kind initiatives over a 45-year illustrious career, has hung up his boots. Before bidding a final adieu to bureaucracy and public service, he served as India's G20 Sherpa, and prior to that, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the government's top think tank, NITI Aayog.
A 1980-batch Kerala cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Kant announced his decision to resign as India's G20 Sherpa through a heartfelt post on social media, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting his resignation and for the trust placed in him in driving developmental initiatives that shaped India's growth trajectory.
With his close associates claiming that Kant will definitely not stop here, as he still has a lot of energy and vision to offer, speculations are rife about his future plans. Many believe he might join the private sector, but nothing can be said with certainty.
However, Kant himself has expressed a desire to engage more with start-ups, think tanks, and academic institutions in a personal capacity.
'I now look forward to contributing to India's transformational journey towards Viksit Bharat by facilitating and supporting free enterprise, start-ups, think tanks, and academic institutions,' Kant wrote on his X handle.
'After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life. I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India for accepting my resignation as G20 Sherpa and for having given me the…,' he wrote in the X post.

Kant, a retired 1980-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, was appointed G20 Sherpa in 2022 and tasked with steering the meeting of developed and emerging countries. A sherpa works as the PM's envoy for the forum and does heavy lifting on behalf of the country's leader. "After 45 years of dedicated service, I have decided to embrace new opportunities & begin a new chapter," Kant said in a social media post, thanking PM Modi for the trust he placed in him to drive developmental initiatives that shaped the country's growth trajectory. "Leading India's G20 Presidency in 2023 was a significant milestone in my career. Despite complex global challenges, we achieved a unanimous consensus on the New Delhi Leaders Declaration, and refocused attention on key developmental issues," Kant, who is known for his problem-solving abilities, said. Rajamahendravaram: BJP state president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari stated that the past 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance have significantly transformed India's development landscape, bringing the benefits of progress directly to the people. Speaking at a press conference at the BJP office here on Sunday, she said Modi, having personally experienced poverty, introduced numerous schemes focused on the welfare of the poor after assuming office in 2014. 'His tenure has seen a balanced emphasis on both development and welfare,' she noted, adding that the PM is moving ahead with an unwavering commitment to achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. She said that before 2014, only 7 crore people had access to banking. Thanks to the Jan Dhan Yojana, over 55 crore people now benefit from banking services. Purandeswari also spoke of key welfare schemes like the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme, which has provided healthcare worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore to 9 crore citizens, and affordable medicines through Jan Aushadhi stores. Reports by IMF, UNDP, and World Bank have affirmed that 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty and poverty rates have dropped by 25%, she said. She praised digital governance, citing that 49 per cent of global digital payments now happen in India, with 95 crores smartphones in use nationwide. She credited direct benefit transfers (DBT) for curbing corruption and ensuring transparency. On Andhra Pradesh, she criticised the previous government's neglect of Amaravati but welcomed the current state government's renewed focus. She noted the Centre's Rs 15,000 crore funding through the World Bank and Rs 11,000 crore from HUDCO for Amaravati, in addition to Rs 20,000 crore for regional connectivity are making Amaravati a reality. She also spoke of Centre's continued support for the Polavaram project and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. On a diplomatic front, she expressed pride in being part of India's diplomatic delegation post-Operation Sindoor, visiting six nations, including the UK, Germany, and France to counter global misinformation on terrorism. At the end of the event, Purandeswari was felicitated by MLC Somu Veerraju, BJP district president P. Nagendra, and other leaders.

Vedanta plans Rs 1.28L cr mega smelter plant in Dhenkanal
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Mining giant Vedanta Group's mega aluminium project at an investment of Rs 1.28 lakh crore in Dhenkanal district are among the eight industrial projects worth Rs 1.51 lakh crore cleared by the state govt on Monday. The high-level clearance authority (HLCA), chaired by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved Vedanta's plan to set up a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter along with a 4,900 MW captive power plant (CPP). The project is expected to generate 30,000 jobs and further strengthen Odisha's position as a global aluminium hub. The seven other approved projects, spread across six districts — Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Khurda, and Sambalpur — cover diverse sectors including chemicals, steel, textiles, and metal downstream industries, promising an additional 30,200 jobs. The CM-led panel also approved SRF Ltd's proposal to set up a speciality chemicals and refrigerant manufacturing unit with an annual capacity of 2 lakh MT in Ganjam, at an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, which is expected to generate 20,000 employment opportunities. Additionally, Linde India Ltd will invest Rs 1,303.50 crore to establish an air separation unit in Jajpur, offering high-quality industrial gases and employing 100 people. In the ancillary metal sector, the panel approved Star Metal Works Pvt Ltd's plan of a narrow hot strip mill, cold rolling, and plate-cum-steckle mill at an investment of Rs 2,291 crore in Sambalpur, creating 250 jobs. Supreme Metals Export Pvt Ltd plans a 1.2 MTPA rolling mill for TMT bars and wire rods in Keonjhar, worth Rs 1,500 crore, generating 680 jobs. In the textiles sector, Sportking India Ltd will invest Rs 2,055 crore in Khurda to establish a cotton and blended yarn manufacturing unit with an annual capacity of 62,000 MT, creating 4,800 jobs. The CM said the six HLCA meetings chaired by him since he took over cleared 62 projects with total investments of Rs 5.67 lakh crore that can potentially create about 2.42 lakh jobs. "It is a clear step towards the national goal of 'Viksit Bharat by 2047' and the state's vision of 'Samruddha Odisha by 2036'. Odisha is moving confidently towards becoming a leading industrial and investment hub in India," he said.
