Kerry never fear Westmeath, but maybe this time they should as relegation looms large

The only way the Kingdom can be assured of survival is to win the game with Westmeath this Saturday afternoon in Tralee
Kerryman
It was, we felt, a situation a bit like that famous line from Dante's Inferno. You know the one about abandoning hope all ye who enter? We travelled that day with little hope and an expectation that Westmeath would do a number on the Kingdom.
Upon entering the press-box the local scribblers and scribes expressed reservations about their side's chances in the game. We reassured them to not fret, Kerry were going poorly, this one was sure to be one-way traffic.

GAA previews: Laois hurt provides necessary fuel for Joe McDonagh tilt

SATURDAY. Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-finals. Offaly v New York, Glenisk O'Connor Park, 2pm (D. Murnane, Cork) Live GAA+. There should be some trepidation about what a New York team bring to the competition. In their inaugural entry, they were only four points poorer than Laois last year and while personnel has changed they will be fresh at the very least. Offaly should be sore with themselves that they didn't qualify for the quarter-finals from the group stages. Verdict: Offaly. Westmeath v Laois, TEG Cusack Park, 5pm (M. McNally, Monaghan). Laois's incredible finish against Offaly last weekend propels them into the last-12 game and their confidence contrasts with how Westmeath let slip a quarter-final berth against Limerick. If it comes down to the closing stages again, Laois will believe but Westmeath have the firepower to subdue them. Verdict: Westmeath. Electric Ireland All-Ireland MFC quarter-finals. Kerry v Cavan, Laois Hire O'Moore Park, 12pm (N. Quinn, Clare). A difference class of challenge for Kerry and one they may find shackling at times. Nevertheless, they will be expected to win. Verdict: Kerry. Tyrone v Cork, Laois Hire O'Moore Park, 1.45pm (C. Ryan, Galway). The rising tide in Tyrone is lifting all boats and it could drown Cork here if they are not careful. A tight start required to give them a chance. Cork captain Cathal McCarthy successfully appealed the red card he received against Kerry two weeks ago, meaning the St Colum's man is free to play. Verdict: Tyrone. Roscommon v Louth, Kingspan Breffni, 7pm (P. Clarke, Cavan). Channel that Leinster final heartache and Louth can make the last four. Verdict: Louth. TG4 Football All-Ireland Ladies SFC, Round 1. Group 1. Galway v Tipperary, Tuam Stadium, 2pm (G. Chapman, Sligo). Galway finished first to Tipperary's third in Division 2 yet the points won difference was remarkable, Galway amassing 21 points to Tipperary's nine. Galway scored twice as much as their neighbours and only one result looks on the cards. Verdict: Galway. Group 2. Kerry v Mayo, Austin Stack Park, 2pm (J. Murphy, Carlow). Mayo have sure had their toils and heading to Tralee to commence their All-Ireland campaign looks an arduous one. Kerry have shown they can turn it on when they want it to but they can play within themselves to pick up the points here. Verdict: Kerry. Group 3. Meath v Armagh, Páirc Tailteann, 3pm (M. Farrelly, Cavan). Armagh will be disappointed to have given up their league crown but they have moved from entertainers to contenders and Meath know they must absorb plenty of punishment to take anything from this opener. Verdict: Armagh. Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie championship, Round 3. Group 1. Clare v Limerick, Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chíosóg, 2pm (B. Kearney, Kildare). Clare will go a long way to securing a knock-out spot with a win here and it's well within their compass. Limerick are a youthful side who are making in-roads but Clare have the advantage. Verdict: Clare. Wexford v Tipperary, Chadwicks Wexford Park, 4pm (G. Donegan, Dublin). Tipperary were humbled by the All-Ireland champions but they can pick up their first points against a Wexford side who have lost two games on the bounce. Verdict: Tipperary. Group 2. Dublin v Kilkenny, Parnell Park, 2pm (D. O'Callaghan, Limerick). Getting the home loss to Waterford out of their systems quick is the order of the day for Kilkenny. Dublin can be stubborn but it should be a second win for The Cats. Verdict: Kilkenny. Waterford v Derry, Walsh Park, 4pm (C. McAllister, Cork). Derry are looking like a fish out of water and after a famous win over Kilkenny, The Déise will be determined to sustain that momentum. Verdict: Waterford. SUNDAY. Joe McDonagh Cup final. Kildare v Laois, Croke Park 1.45pm (M. Kennedy, Tipperary) Live RTÉ. It's still difficult to square how Kildare topped a table, beating Laois in Portlaoise by 11 points along the way, yet were defeated by relegated Kerry in their opening round. The Lilywhites have been superb since turning their run around with a second round win over Westmeath and that belief they have generated is a potent weapon as much as Laois will be fuelled by what was a chastening win that almost derailed their promotion challenge. What's most impressive about Kildare this year is their spread of scorers as much as David Qualter is expected to oblige with the placed balls. Having been in a number of Christy Ring deciders, Croke Park shouldn't be too daunting for them either but this is a Laois side that has been exposed to Liam MacCarthy Cup opposition this year. Although they were often on the losing side, that should count for something. They sure could do with some of the experienced men they have lost since last year's final but there is enough nous and hurt in their ranks to complete the job. Verdict: Laois. Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-finals. Wexford v Antrim, Chadwicks Wexford Park, 1pm (C. Lane, Cork). Another team kicking themselves that they didn't top their group, Wexford should be able to put behind them that loss to Fermanagh in Croke Park last weekend. Antrim are doughty but they might not be able to make this long trip worthwhile. Verdict: Wexford. Sligo v Carlow, Tubbercurry, 2pm (B. Cassidy, Derry). Goals were Sligo's undoing against Kildare in their battle for No1 position in Group 1 and here they face a revived Carlow side who will ask awkward questions of them. You would imagine Sligo will do enough to avoid a surprise defeat. Verdict: Sligo. Electric Ireland All-Ireland MFC quarter-final. Offaly v Mayo, King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park, 3pm (A. Coyne, Westmeath). Offaly showed so much bottle in Newbridge but they can't be complacent here. Verdict: Offaly. TG4 Football All-Ireland Ladies SFC, Round 1. Waterford v Dublin, Fraher Field, 1.30pm (B. Redmond, Wexford). There is plenty of life remaining in this Dublin team as they demonstrated in their Leinster final win over Meath. Waterford finished ahead of them in the league on score difference and home soil helps but Dublin to squeeze by. Verdict: Dublin.

Epsom Derby 2025: the pin-stickers' guide

It may not attract the attention it once did but the Epsom Derby remains one of the biggest days on the racing calendar and this year's renewal of the iconic race shapes as an intriguing one. Will Aidan O'Brien win a record-extending 11th premier Classic? Will 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court stay for Godolphin? Can Galway jockey Rossa Ryan add a Derby to a CV that already includes an Arc? How will supplemented French pair Midak and New Ground fare? Questions aplenty and while we'll only know the answers shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, here's our horse-by-horse guide to the 246th Derby. 1: Al Wasl Stom Trainer: Owen Burrows Jockey: David Probert Rating: 3/10 Odds: 100-1 Made all when getting off the mark at the third time of asking at Chester last month but likely to be out of his depth in this company. 2: Damysus Trainer: John and Thady Gosden Jockey: James Doyle Rating: 6/10 Odds: 12-1 Shaped well when second in the Dante and going a furlong and a half further could bring about further improvement. Each-way claims. 3: Delacroix Trainer: Aidan O'Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Rating: 8/10 Odds: 11-4 Victorious in two Derby trials at Leopardstown and looks sure to stay the trip but the record of Dubawi colts in this Classic (0 from nine) is a niggling worry. 4: Green Storm Trainer: Charlie Johnston Jockey: Billy Loughnane Rating: 3/10 Odds: 40-1 Second in a weak French Group 1 as a juvenile but a record of one win from seven starts doesn't inspire confidence. 5: Lambourn Trainer: Aidan O'Brien Jockey: Wayne Lordan Rating: 6/10 Odds: 15-2 Second to stablemate Delacroix in the Ballysax before winning the Dee Stakes at Chester. Could be the pacesetter. 6: Lazy Griff Trainer: Charlie Johnston Jockey: Christophe Soumillon Rating: 3/10 Odds: 66-1 Like Green Storm, he was kept busy as a two-year-old and like his stablemate he struggles to get his head in front. 7: Midak Trainer: Francois-Henri Graffard Jockey: Mickael Barzalona Rating: 7/10 Odds: 12-1 Unraced at two, this supplemented French raider is unbeaten in three starts this season and looks an intriguing contender. 8: New Ground Trainer: Henri-Francois Devin Jockey: Alexis Pouchin Rating: 3/10 Odds: 25-1 Another supplemented French challenger but could only manage third in two starts this season. Unlikely to land a meaningful blow. 9: Nightime Dancer Trainer: Richard Hannon Jockey: Jamie Spencer Rating: 3/10 Odds: 100-1 Third in Lingfield Derby Trial behind two Ballydoyle colts not deemed good enough to make the trip to Epsom. Likely to struggle. 10: Nightwalker Trainer: John and Thady Gosden Jockey: Tom Marquand Rating: 5/10 Odds: 20-1 Fifth in the Dante, the Frankel colt should appreciate the step up in trip but may struggle to keep tabs on the leaders in the early part of the race. 11: Pride Of Arras Pride Of Arras and Rossa Ryan (light blue) winning The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Rossa Ryan Rating: 9/10 Odds: 5-1 An impressive winner of the Dante on only his second career start, this talented son of New Bay should have no issue with the trip. Massive player. 12: Rogue Impact Trainer: James Owen Jockey: Luke Morris Rating: 2/10 Odds: 70-1 Last of six at Lingfield last month and there's no logical reason why he should fare any better in this company. 13: Ruling Court Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Rating: 8/10 Odds: 10-3 If the 2000 Guineas hero stays, he'll win as his Newmarket triumph is undoubtedly the strongest form on offer. That's a significant if though. 14: Sea Scout Trainer: Simon and Ed Crisford Jockey: Harry Davies Rating: 4/10 Odds: 50-1 Ticks the track box having won at Epsom in April but saw his limitations exposed when eighth in the Dante last time out. 15: Stanhope Gardens Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Hector Crouch Rating: 6/10 Odds: 12-1 Got within a neck of Delacroix as a two-year-old and while his win at Salisbury last month proved little, he has better prospects than many here. 16: Tennessee Stud Trainer: Joseph O'Brien Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle Rating: 5/10 Odds: 28-1 A Group 1 winner in France last season but was firmly put in his place by Delacroix at Leopardstown last month. Hard to fancy. 17: The Lion In Winter The Lion In Winter and Stephen Gray pictured at Ballydoyle Stables. Pic: Healy Racing Trainer: Aidan O'Brien Jockey: Colin Keane Rating: 5/10 Odds: 6-1 Winter favourite for this Classic but surrendered his unbeaten record when sixth in the Dante. Being drawn in stall 19 is a further negative. 18: Tornado Alert Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Jockey: Oisin Murphy Rating: 5/10 Odds: 20-1 Ran a big race at a big price when fourth in the 2000 Guineas but it's hard to see his stamina lasting over four furlongs further. 19: Tuscan Hills Trainer: Raphael Freire Jockey: David Egan Rating: 4/10 Odds: 66-1 Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old but could only manage seventh in the Dante last month. Little chance. Darren Norris' verdict History suggests opposing Team Ballydoyle in the Derby is an act of folly and it's easy to make a coherent case for Delacroix giving Aidan O'Brien a record-extending 11th win in the premier Classic. However, the Dubawi colt has looked more solid than spectacular in his Leopardstown wins so a chance is taken on PRIDE OF ARRAS landing the spoils for Arc-winning pair Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. His lack of experience could be viewed as a negative but 2013 victor Ruler of The Word and 2022 hero Desert Crown had also only run twice before rocking up at Epsom and Pride Of Arras showed enough at York to suggest he has all the attributes required to become the 10th Dante winner since 1980 to go on to Derby glory. Should stamina prove Ruling Court's undoing, unbeaten French raider Midak can hit the frame at a decent price.
