Elderly Sikh man brutally assaulted in Los Angeles, suspect in custody
Harpal Singh, 70, was assaulted by "unhoused" man Bo Richard Vitagliano while he was taking his daily walk near the Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles on August 4.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Tuesday that Vitagliano, 44, was arrested on Monday for the brutal attack against Singh.
Vitagliano has been booked for assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set for USD 1.1 million.
Advocacy group The Sikh Coalition said that while the suspect is in custody for the brutal assault on Singh, the police are not investigating the case as a hate crime.
It said Singh has sustained very serious injuries during the assault and remains in critical condition.
The police said that on August 4, law enforcement officials responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon investigation.
Preliminary investigation revealed there was a physical altercation between Singh and Vitagliano, who is an 'unhoused' individual.

15-yr-old girl dies by suicide after gang-rape in Bulandshahr
Meerut: A 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide a week after she was gang-raped by three men in Bulandshahr, police said on Monday. According to the complaint filed by the victim's mother, the incident took place on Aug 9 when the girl had gone to collect fodder from the field. She was allegedly dragged into a sugarcane field by three men – all in their early 20s – from the same village, who gang-raped her. The accused also allegedly blackmailed her and demanded sexual favours from her with claims of having recorded a video of the act. Police said the girl, distressed by the threats, consumed pesticide at home last Thursday. She was taken to a hospital in Meerut, where she died on Saturday. SSP Dinesh Kumar Singh said that when the girl's mother was informed of the incident by a neighbour, she allegedly beat her, which further distressed the teenager. "The girl then consumed pesticide. She was taken to hospital but succumbed. Her family cremated the body without informing police, due to which no postmortem could be conducted and crucial evidence was lost," Singh said. "An FIR under section 70 (2) (gangrape) of BNS and 5/6 of Pocso Act was registered against the three men. One of them has been arrested.
