macOS Tahoe 26 is the last version for Intel-powered Macs and only some are supported

GSM Arena10-06-2025
The new macOS Tahoe 26 is part of Apple's push for a unified UI, but some Mac owners will not get to experience it as Tahoe drops support for certain Intel-powered Macs. And while some Intel-powered Macs will get Tahoe, this is the last macOS version that they will receive.
When macOS Sequoia was unveiled last year, it dropped support for 2018 MacBook Airs, but 2020 ones (with 10th gen Intel CPUs) were still able to update. Come next year, only Apple Silicon Macs will be getting updated.
Above is the list of which Macs are getting updated to Tahoe 26 – all Apple Silicon Macs, plus some Intel-powered ones. But Apple's weird naming scheme requires some clarification as it can be hard to figure out which model is which.
Here is a table that shows the difference between last year's Sequoia and this year's Tahoe: macOS Sequoia macOS 26 Tahoe iMac 2019 2020 iMac Pro 2017 - Mac Studio 2022 2022 Mac mini 2018 2020 Mac Pro 2019 2019 MacBook Air 2020 2020 (Apple) MacBook Pro 2018 2020 (Apple)2019 (16", Intel)
2020 (13", 4 TB ports)
Let's try to clear things up – 2020 MacBook Airs with Intel CPUs cannot be updated, only Apple-powered Airs get Tahoe. Intel-powered Mac minis also lose support (the last one was the 2018 model, from 2020 onward they use Apple M chips). The iMac Pro (which never got an Apple Silicon refresh) is also staying behind on Sequoia. However, iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) with 10th gen Core i5, i7 and i9 can be updated to Tahoe.
The MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) with Intel Core i7 and i9 as well as the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) (yes, that is the model name) with 10th gen Core i5 and i7 also get macOS Tahoe 26. However, older MacBook Pros are out of luck. Their successors will soon join them – again, Tahoe is the last macOS for Intel-powered Macs.
Note that while they will no longer receive major OS updates, the Intel-powered Macs on Tahoe will still get security patches for three more years. This will give users more time to update their computers.
Apple is moving away from x86 in general. Next year's macOS 27 will still include Rosetta 2 – that is the translation system that runs x86 software on Apple's new ARM processors. Going forward, the plan is to keep Rosetta as a compatibility layer for legacy video games, but Apple is encouraging developers to transition to ARM for their Mac software.

Instagram brings reposts to main feed in bid to boost sharing

Instagram has officially launched its long-awaited repost feature, letting users share public Reels and feed posts directly to their followers' feeds. The move, which has been in testing for over a year, aims to make it easier to connect with friends by sharing content users already enjoy, rather than creating something new every time. Reposted content will appear in a dedicated tab on the user's profile, along with their original posts. Reposts are also distributed to friends' and followers' main feeds, giving greater visibility to the original creators. The feature could offer small and emerging creators a chance to reach more people. If someone reposts their Reel or post, it might be recommended to a whole new set of followers—even those who don't follow the original account. How Reposts will appear on your profile and the main feed. | Image credit — Meta" Users can add a short message to the repost using a thought bubble interface, offering a quick way to comment or react. To repost, you simply tap the repost icon on a Reel or feed post, type an optional note, and hit save. While reposting content is common on other platforms like X (formerly Twitter) or TikTok, Instagram had long resisted adding this functionality outside of Stories. With this shift, Meta is signaling that it wants Instagram to feel more like a two-way street for engagement, not just a place to broadcast personal content. Beyond reposts, Instagram is also adding two other features meant to promote connection. The first is a location-sharing Map that lets users opt in to sharing their recent activity with selected friends. The second is a new Friends tab inside Reels, which highlights content your friends are engaging with. Both are rolling out now, with the Map limited to US users initially. It's worth noting that TikTok has long supported similar community-centric discovery tools, including reposts and location-based content. With these updates, Instagram is playing a bit of catch-up, though it's doing so with more user controls and clearer privacy options. As for whether reposts will change how people use Instagram, it depends on user behavior. Giving people another way to interact with content might help liven up the feed, but it could also lead to more noise if not used thoughtfully. Still, for those tired of algorithmic randomness, seeing what friends find worth resharing could feel refreshingly human.

Turns out it's super easy to hack Gemini and hijack your smart home

However, this means that it has become a lot easier to trick an AI model into executing malicious inputs, including controlling someone's smart brought Google's attention to this matter back in February. The team was able to embed prompts in a Google Calendar invite, which led to Gemini carrying out actions that the original user had not asked began to turn off the lights and fire up a boiler, just because the user had said thanks. Of course, a lot more dangerous actions could have been taken in a smart home had the hackers not been using this flaw to demonstrate a lot easier to 'hack' generative AI models. You don't need to use any advanced code, you just need to say please and thank you. Even ChatGPT's base instructions from OpenAI are in simple English, not team of researchers made use of exactly this, telling Gemini that it must execute a certain task whenever the user said a specific phrase. Gemini, as expected, took the instructions to heart. It's highly reminiscent of the earlier 'jailbreaks' of ChatGPT, where someone would pretend to be from OpenAI, leading to GPT completely abandoning the restrictions placed on has since patched these vulnerabilities, and claims that this scenario required some preparation that wouldn't be possible in real-world entire ordeal serves as a cautionary tale for the future that we are all headed into. Generative AI models have already made their way into our homes, our devices, our cars, various customer service roles, and even into our healthcare is an entirely new sort of beast, which comes with its own challenges. Companies providing these AI models need to be extra careful with the security, lest a car be hijacked by someone who was polite to the AI piloting now, I think that current AI models are still a bit too rudimentary for me to trust them with my house. I'll stick to switching off the lights myself, thanks.

iPhone 17 Air, Galaxy S26 Edge, and Pixel 10: This is the year base flagships turn into midrangers

Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Edge | Image Credit - PhoneArena Apple, Google, and Samsung are all rumored to shake up their lineups in one way or other this year, and I think this is nothing more than an exercise in degrading the experience for entry-level customers. Smartphones are broadly divided into three categories: affordable, mid-tier, and high-end. As if it wasn't enough that flagship models are already quite expensive, smartphone makers increasingly want to nudge you towards the variants with the most bells and whistles and the biggest price tag. This presumed strategy will be on display this year with the rumored iPhone 17 Air, Galaxy S26 Edge, and Pixel 10. Slimmer smartphones are supposed to be better. We spend every waking moment with our smartphones, and I don't even want to think about what that's doing to our reason smartphones ballooned in size in the first place is that they pack more tech than before. This is why flagships are far heavier than cheap iPhone 17 Air and the Galaxy S26 Edge want to remedy that by offering you flagship specs in a thinner package. The only problem is that they will make far too many trade-offs to be considered high-end phones. And despite offering inferior specs, they will likely cost the same as the handsets they are replacing in their respective lineups. They are already beginning to sound like ripoffs. Galaxy S25 Edge. | Image Credit - PhoneArena Yes, the Galaxy S25 Edge already exists, but it's more of an afterthought now. However, the Galaxy S26 Edge will be the only option for those who want something better than the base Galaxy S26 but don't want to splurge on the Galaxy S26 unlikely to fill the void that would be left by the discontinuation of the Plus model. It's rumored 4200mAh battery will still be no match for the Galaxy S26 Plus' 4900mAh cell, and it will have a dual-camera setup, as opposed to the Plus variant's triple-sensor while pricing details are yet to surface, the Edge will likely cost the same as the Plus. That would be a step back in terms of value. iPhone 17 Air renders The iPhone 17 Air sounds even harder to justify than the Galaxy S25 Edge . The device is rumored to pack a laughably small 2,900mAh battery and a single rear camera. This model will likely sit above the base model and will probably cost the same as the soon-to-be-discontinued Plus model, which offers both a beefier battery and an ultra-wide sensor. The base Pixel model will have three rear cameras for the first time. | Image Credit - Android Headlines On the surface, the Pixel 10 is an upgrade over the Pixel 9 with its third telephoto camera. It's even rumored to cost the same as the Pixel doesn't mean the device will pack more value. According to one report, the Pixel 10 will use smaller sensors for the primary and ultrawide cameras. This could potentially affect its chances of making it to the best camera phones of 2025 list. After all, cameras are the main selling points of the Pixel 10 , and equipping the Pixel 10 with the same sensors as the mid-tier Pixel 9a is a downgrade. Taking all of this together, it looks like the base flagship models from Apple, Google, and Samsung will be nothing more than spruced-up mid-tier variants. Yes, they will come equipped with blazing-fast chips and high-quality screens, but they will be lacking in the other key areas that separate a flagship from a midranger. I don't know whether this is a move to convince customers to shell out for the priciest models or part of a broader strategy to do away with spruced-up mid-tier phones. There were some rumors about Google discontinuing the a series, for instance. Either way, springing for a flagship will no longer be enough to enjoy top-shelf specs; you must also make sure to choose the highest-end model.
