Noel Johansen: Hallmark star shares heartbreaking tribute after wife killed in Vancouver car attack

West Australian02-05-2025

A Hallmark star has spoken of his anguish after his wife died in the horrific Vancouver car ramming attack.
Noel Johansen was with his family at the Lapu-Lapu event celebrating Filipino culture when an SUV ploughed into the crowd, killing his wife, Jen Darbellay, and 10 others.
At a vigil in Canada, a devastated Johansen, who appeared opposite Blake Lively in Age of Adaline and in several Hallmark and Lifetime movies, told mourners how the tragedy had unfolded.
He said Ms Darbellay was just metres behind him and their children when the SUV struck and it 'felt like a 'giant tidal wave'.
'It hit us before we knew. I was falling in slow motion trying to save my head from smashing in the pavement.'
Johansen and son, Ford, 15, and daughter Darby, 7 were all injured in the attack.
Propped up on crutches, Johansen described his wife as a selfless, creative and empathetic person.
'She never thought of herself; she thought of herself as small in terms of the reach,' The Sun reports.
'And I can tell you she was larger than life for any of you who know her.'
Close friend and business partner, Michael Daingerfield Hall, has set up a
GoFundMe
for the actor and his children.
'This is an incredibly difficult time for Noel, and moving forward with his life is going to feel insurmountable. I know that his work will undoubtedly be affected and I would really like for him and his family to be supported during this time,' he wrote.
He went on to say Ms Darbelly was 'one-of-a-kind'.
'She was an incredibly thoughtful, warm, caring, smart, stylish, artistic woman. A gifted painter, a selfless mother, and a loving wife. She gave the best hugs, was always there to listen without judgement, and had the sweetest voice,' Mr Hall wrote.
Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, has been charged with eight counts of second degree murder and more charges are possible.
Investigators ruled out terrorism and said Lo had a history of mental health issues.

Katie Price brings back Jordan in lucrative AI deal

Katie Price is resurrecting her alter-ego Jordan after signing a lucrative deal to trademark an AI recreation of her younger self. The 47-year-old former glamour shot to fame as Jordan back in the 1990s but she gradually retired the name as she moved into TV work later in her career, but Katie is now bringing her back using the latest technology as part of a six-figure deal with American AI company OhChat which is recreating her image and voice. Katie told The Sun newspaper: "The Jordan days were the best days of my life. This AI move is so clever. It's a genius move. "It's also a way for me to feel like her again. Jordan's back and now I'm in competition with Jordan. "I love it and they've really captured my voice and personality - you see me moving and everything. It's scarily weird but fascinating." She added: "I couldn't be more excited to bring back the iconic Jordan, someone who I hold near and dear to my heart, and who my fans have been asking to see again. "From my digital twin styling to its tone of voice, I wanted to be involved every step of the way to create the most authentic experience possible for my fans. Jordan is back, and my fans will absolutely love this." The AI firm gave Katie was 30 phrases to record so experts could recreate her voice with the former model. Katie has been teasing the June 9 launch date on her social media channels and gave fans a brief taster in an Instagram video which was narrated by her AI self, which is heard saying: "Oi, oi it's Jordan here. You've seen me in the papers, but tomorrow I'm coming off the page ... " Another video declared: "No more looking at those cheeky mags. In three days you can have me all to yourself." Reports suggest this new money-spinning deal will help boost Katie's bank balance considerably after a tough few years. She made millions at the height of her fame, but her fiances dwindled in decent years and she was declared bankrupt twice as her debts spiralled out of control. The Sun reports Katie is planning to put together a photoshoot in which she will be seen posing alongside her "digital twin" and is considering a TV special in which she could interview the AI version of Jordan.

Shakira teases UK tour as she admits she 'can't wait' for new run of shows

Shakira "can't wait" to tour the UK. The 48-year-old pop star is currently on the road in the US and even though she has not explicitly confirmed any dates in the UK just yet, she hinted that the tour will happen eventually. Asked about her rumoured UK tour, she told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "I can't wait." The Hips Don't Lie hitmaker was performing at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami over the weekend, and told the crowd that it was just "surreal" to see the 65,000-seater venue filled out. She said: "To see this place this packed, it's a dream for me. It's surreal. 'The last time I came to Hard Rock Stadium, I saw Beyonce's show and I said to myself, 'How amazing would it be if I could play the stadium one day?' 'How amazing that tonight, I'm here playing two stadiums. I have the best crowd in the world. You make all of my dreams come true." Shakira hasn't hit the UK for a run of gigs in eight years, but it was previously rumored that she already had venues in mind for some huge performances next year. In January, a source "Shakira is a massive force in music around the world, and it's been a very long time since she last performed in the UK." The Colombian star was an only child from a middle-class background, but has previously spoken about how her family became 'poor almost overnight' when she was seven in the wake of her dad William Chadid's jewellery business crumbling. In April 2024, she told Marie Claire magazine: "Maybe it's a combination of the place where I was born, the way I was raised, the challenges I had to face growing up. It's just made me a very driven person. 'I always have the drive for more. There's never a time that I come off stage and don't think there's something I could have done better. 'I can never say no to a challenge. There are always new mountains to climb.' 'She has a new lease of life with loads of youngsters into her music now, so she is hitting the road with her most ambitious and impressive tour ever. 'Shakira is chucking everything but the kitchen sink at her upcoming gigs and wants to do a full lap of the globe. She's going all-out.'

Pheobe's mum slams charity fundraiser

The mother of missing Queensland teenager Phoebe Bishop has slammed a fundraiser raising money in her daughter's name. Ms Bishop, 17, was declared missing after she failed to check-in for a flight from Bundaberg to visit her boyfriend in Western Australia on May 15. On Friday, police said they found human remains near the Good Night National Scrub Park outside of Gin Gin, but were yet to confirm if they were Ms Bishop's. The teen's roommates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with her murder and are alleged by police to have moved her body multiple times. Amid an outpouring of grief, Ms Bishop's mother, Kylie Johnson, took to social media on Sunday to condemn a GoFundMe campaign set up in her daughter's name. A separate GoFundMe campaign, which has been endorsed by Ms Bishop's family, has raised more than $6000 to a goal of $17,000. Organised by Tracey Berends, the campaign is aimed at raising money for the SES and agencies working to find Ms Bishop, and those that supported her in her life. 'We would also like to be able to donate to the YSchool in Bundaberg on Pheobe's behalf where Pheobe thrived from their support and guidance,' Ms Berends wrote.
