Buena Vista Interchange project update
COLUMBUS, Ga. () — In Columbus, a major interchange project is nearing completion.
State leaders and transportation officials gathered to discuss updates on the Buena Vista Interchange project. The $47 million project aims to reconstruct the interchange at Buena Vista Road and I-185. Now, it is almost 80% complete.
State Representatives, Carolyn Hugley and Teddy Reese joined Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) officials to walk the site and share project details.
The project's concept report was approved in late 2016, and a bidder was selected in 2020. However, the pandemic caused some delays. The construction challenges laid out by GDOT's project update include, 'Contractor and Utility owners faced delays in sourcing materials following pandemic supply shortages. Smaller work crews or delayed activities due to smaller labor market.' as well as the interchange being open to traffic for the entirety of construction, 'Challenges and risks are inherent when keeping a project site open while undertaking a large-scale construction project. '
State Transportation Investment Act (TIA) Administrator for the GDOT, Kenneth Franks, said, 'We definitely experienced supply chain issues on multiple facets of the projects from just construction materials for the actual roadway and utility supplies.'
Despite pandemic delays and utility relocations, the GDOT says the project now remains on schedule.
The project replaces an existing bridge with a wider and modified to accommodate a Diverging Diamond, a sidewalk on the south side, and a multi-use trail on the north side.
Representatives believe the project will serve as a transportation upgrade as well as an economic draw for the area.
Rep. Teddy Reese, (D-Columbus) said, 'A few years back, the citizens of this area were wise enough to pass a TSPLOST, and what that did was that contributed funds so that we could… build the bridges and the roads and do the special projects that we needed to accommodate the growth that we have here in Columbus.'
Reese continued, 'One thing I think everyone is going to appreciate is this beautiful new bridge when it's done, and how well it's going to look in this area, how well it's going to help bring up this area. When you think about economic development, you have to think about the ability to move people, the ability of folks to get around, and also just the aesthetics of the community.'
Representatives Hugley and Reese both thanked the community for their patience and said this transformation will be worth the wait.
Hugley said, 'You know, we have construction going on here as well as down at the spider web, citizens in my community are being inconvenienced. I get that. It's important to really thank our citizens for, number one, having the vision to vote for the TSPLOST and invest in our community. And two, to encourage them to be patient as we move through this process. We are in what we want to call the messy middle. And the end result is going to be a beautiful interchange here.'
Leaders announced that when construction is finished, the bridge will be known as the Maretta Mitchell Taylor Interchange. Hugley said, 'We're so excited that we are standing on what will be the Maretta Mitchell Taylor interchange to honor the first African-American representative that was a female from this area… this was part of her district while she was in the legislature. I'm encouraged that this is going to be a wonderful tribute to her, and it's going to make traveling in this area a lot more convenient for our citizens.'
Official estimate substantial completion by fall of this year and final completion of the project in 2026.
Community members can track the progress of this and other projects on the GDOT website.

Reese said she has received support from many people across the league following the incident and during the process of the investigation. 'I've gone through so many different things in the past couple of years in my life, but I think just having the support and this love, and being a part of an organization that really supports me and loves me is something I just couldn't imagine not being a part of.' Advertisement Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh gave credit to Reese with how she's dealt with the process. 'She's handled it great. I mean, for her, it's about basketball, so I think that's where her mind is at and for us we want to be as locked in as possible to our game plan and what we want to do moving forward into Thursday,' Marsh said. 'I mean, Angel's a winner. Angel's a competitor, and she wants to be there for her teammates and we're certainly there for her as well.' 'I think that we always want to be there to support each other no matter what we're going through in our personal lives or professional lives. It's the kind of environment that we want to create here. It's who we want to be as individuals and who we want to be as teammates.' Indiana's star guard Caitlin Clark issued a similar message after a Fever practice on Monday. 'There's no place for that in our game, there's no place for that in society,' Clark, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, told reporters after practice on Monday. 'Certainly, we want every person who comes into our arena, whether player or fan, to have a great experience,' Clark added. 'I appreciate the league doing that (the investigation). I appreciate that the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that since day one. The investigation we'll leave up to them to find anything and take the proper action if so.' Berks man pleads guilty in fake artwork sales
A Berks County man has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges he sold about $186,000 in counterfeit artwork that he claimed had been created by prominent artists, including the late Keith Haring. Carter Reese, 77, pleaded guilty Thursday before U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey L. Schmehl in Philadelphia to one count each of wire fraud and mail fraud, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney David Metcalf of the Eastern District. Prosecutors are seeking the forfeiture of $186,125, the total amount Reese received in selling the fake artwork, officials said. According to court documents: Reese, claiming to have more than 40 years of experience in art and antiquities, operated Carter P. Reese American Antiques and Fine Art. Online records indicate the business lists a Wyomissing address. An unnamed person — referred to as Associate 1 in court documents — pleaded guilty in federal court in Illinois in September 2010 to six counts of mail fraud and wire fraud in the sale of counterfeit artwork, some of which he had purchased on eBay. He admitted he and co-conspirators schemed to sell limited edition fine art prints and that he forged the signatures of certain artists on those prints. Prosecutors note Associate 1 died in November 2021. From February 2019 to March 2021, Reese sold and tried to sell art that he represented as genuine pieces created by artists, including Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Haring, a Kutztown native. Reese purchased and acquired pieces from Associate 1 at low prices. Many of the pieces Reese sold appeared identical to images of artwork reproductions Associate 1 bought on eBay. Reese told potential buyers that he purchased more than 100 pieces of art from a collector — identified in court papers as Individual 1 — including work by Bacon, Basquiat, Cocteau, Haring, Léger, Lichtenstein, Miró, Picasso and Warhol. Individual 1 never owned or sold such a collection to Reese. At the time Reese offered this art for sale, Individual 1 was dead and thus unavailable to verify Reese's claims for potential buyers. Reese told potential buyers that he acquired an additional set of art from an individual named 'Ken James' who was friends with various renowned artists. 'Ken James' was an alias used by Associate 1 so potential buyers would not know he had been convicted of selling fake artwork. Associate 1 did not have the purported connections to such artists. To support his claims that the artwork was authentic, Reese concealed Associate 1's involvement with the fraudulent artwork; provided prospective buyers with false provenance information such as affidavits signed by himself and an attorney stating that he had acquired the artwork from Individual 1 and sold prospective buyers art on which forged inscriptions and signatures had been added. Reese continued to claim the artwork was authentic even after some potential buyers told him the work was fake. A potential buyer also informed Reese of Associate 1's conviction, but Reese continued to offer artwork he had obtained from Associate 1 as authentic. During a telephone call on July 16, 2020, Reese told a person in Florida that he had acquired various works of art from Individual 1 and offered to sell them. On July 30, 2020, Reese sent a package to the person in Florida containing an affidavit notarized in Berks County falsely certifying that he had acquired artwork by Miró, Lichtenstein, Haring, Picasso, Basquiat, Bacon, Warhol and others from Individual 1. Reese is scheduled to be sentenced in September and faces a maximum possible prison term of 40 years.
