Leaders24-02-2025

Under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Arabia is hosting the 4th Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum (RIHF), from February 24-25, 2025, in the capital city of Riyadh.
The RIHF, organized by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) in partnership with the UN, is gathering humanitarian leaders, donors, practitioners, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss challenges facing humanitarian efforts and come up with innovative solutions that help in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 4th Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum
The KSrelief Supervisor General, Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, noted that the 4th Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum coincides with the 10th anniversary of KSrelief establishment, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). Speaking during a media roundtable session, Al-Rabeeah said that the 4th RIHF brings together experts and humanitarian workers from across the world to discuss and address the global challenges to humanitarian work.
The forum features high-level panel discussions with top local and international researchers and specialists to explore topics such as the role of humanitarian diplomacy in conflicts and disasters, humanitarian access and supply chains, and addressing displacement in an era of increased conflicts and natural disasters.
The RIHF also includes dialogue sessions, workshops, and other events. Furthermore, KSrelief will sign several agreements with UN and international organizations, in line with Saudi Arabia's humanitarian efforts, Al-Rabeeah said. AI Hackathon
In collaboration with Alfaisal University, KSrelief organizes the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Humanitarian Relief Hackathon, as part of the 4th RIHF activities.
The hackathon aims to utilize AI-driven solutions to address critical humanitarian challenges in healthcare. The event gathers tech and humanitarian experts to develop innovative solutions that align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, focusing on three main pillars: AI, healthcare and innovation. RIHF Objectives
Held under the theme 'Navigating the Future of Humanitarian Response,' the 4th RIHF aims to foster dialogue and communication among leaders, policymakers, humanitarian workers and researchers to exchange expertise, ideas and best practices in humanitarian work. It also aims to improve the Humanitarian, Development, and Peace Nexus (HDPN) to promote sustainable development.
Moreover, the forum focuses on accelerating the achievement of the SDGs in the humanitarian field, harnessing scientific research and data quality governance to enhance humanitarian work, and encourage young people to engage in volunteering and humanitarian work. RIHF Esteemed Guests
The 4th RIHF features notable attendees and speakers, including the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan and the Saudi Ambassador to the US, Princess Reema Bandar Al Saud.
They also include the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; the President of the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), Abdullah Al-Ghamdi; and the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, Amy Pope, among others. KSrelief Humanitarian Efforts
Since its establishment in 2015, KSrelief has led Saudi Arabia's humanitarian efforts across many countries. So far, KSrelief has implemented 3,355 projects in 106 countries in collaboration with 466 partners, with a total cost surpassing $7 billion.
According to KSrelief latest data, the top countries receiving KSrelief aid are Yemen ($4.5 billion), Palestine ($512 million), Syria ($476 million), and Somalia ($235 million). KSrelief projects focus on critical sectors, including food, education, health, water and sanitation, benefiting millions of people in need.
In November 2024, KSrelief and Al-Rabeeah received global health and humanitarian leadership awards from the National Council on US-Arab Relations in recognition of their relief efforts. Al-Rabeeah said that this award is an international acknowledgement of Saudi Arabia's significant role in relief efforts through KSrelief.

Over 23,000 buses deployed while Mashaer Train transports 604,000 pilgrims

Saudi Gazette Report MINA — More than 23,000 buses were deployed across three shuttle routes, supplemented by traditional modes of transportation during this year's Hajj, according to the control room at the Public Transport Center of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites. This effort, part of the largest transport fleet operating in a single area worldwide, achieved a record time for Tawaf Al-Ifadah, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and precise operational coordination. Moreover, the Mashaer Metro Train maintained its efficient performance, transporting over 604,000 pilgrims since its launch of operation for this year's Hajj on Tuesday. These were distributed across three main movements: Movement A with more than 27,000 passengers, Movement B with 283,000, and Movement C—the highest—with 294,000, reflecting the system's strong operational efficiency. In the health sector, the Ministry of Health continued to provide integrated services through its facilities across the holy sites. The number of health services provided exceeded 125,573, including advanced procedures such as 216 cardiac catheterizations and 18 open-heart surgeries, all performed efficiently by qualified Saudi medical personnel. This outcome confirms the high level of health preparedness and the development of national medical capabilities. In the same context, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reported that it has conducted over 5.5 million electronic readings of the Nusuk Card as part of its technical plans to enhance pilgrim services and improve organizational safety. Meanwhile, the Pilgrims Care Center, through the unified number 1966, has provided more than 310,000 services since the beginning of the season, including inquiries and direct support. Additionally, field teams from the Compliance Centers have carried out over 65,000 inspection tours of service providers to reinforce compliance and improve performance quality. These integrated efforts reflect the strong coordination among various entities involved in Hajj, under the guidance of the wise leadership and in line with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to advance the Hajj system, harness modern technology, enhance the pilgrim experience, and enable them to perform their rituals in a safe, organized environment prepared to the highest international standards.

Drones Successfully Transport Medicines between Hospitals during Hajj 2025

The Makkah Health Cluster announced that the pilot operation of a drone-powered medication transport program between healthcare centers and hospitals has succeeded in the holy sites, according to Sabq News. This success represents a remarkable milestone in boosting the efficiency of healthcare services during Hajj 2025. The process consists of several stages, starting with the preparation stage in which authorities determine the required quantities and contact with healthcare facilities. Then, the program employs the latest technologies in compliance with the requirements of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. Therefore, medicines, medical supplies, and laboratory equipment can be easily reserved, dispensed, and delivered to healthcare facilities in the holy sites. To ensure that the process runs properly, the authorities can control the drone through a monitoring screen. WHO urges ‘urgent protection' of key Gaza hospitals

GENEVA: The World Health Organization on Thursday called for the 'urgent protection' of two of the last hospitals remaining in the Gaza Strip, warning that the territory's health system is 'collapsing.' The WHO said the Nasser Medical Complex and Al-Amal Hospital risk becoming 'non-functional' because of restrictions on aid and access routes, further damaging a health system already battered by months of war. 'There are already no hospitals functioning in the north of Gaza. Nasser and Amal are the last two functioning public hospitals in Khan Younis, where currently most of the population is living,' the UN agency said in a statement on X. 'Without them, people will lose access to critical health services,' it said. The WHO added that closure of the two hospitals would eliminate 490 beds and reduce Gaza's hospital capacity to less than 1,400 beds — 40 percent below pre-war levels — for a population of two million people. The WHO said the hospitals have not been told to evacuate but lie within or just outside an Israeli-declared evacuation zone announced on June 2. Israeli authorities have told Gaza's health ministry that access routes to the two hospitals will be blocked, the WHO said. As a result, it will be 'difficult, if not impossible' for medical staff and new patients to reach them, it said. 'If the situation further deteriorates, both hospitals are at high risk of becoming non-functional, due to movement restrictions, insecurity, and the inability of WHO and partners to resupply or transfer patients,' the organization said. The WHO said both hospitals are already operating 'above their capacity,' with patients suffering life-threatening injuries arriving amid a 'dire shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies.' It warned the closure of Nasser and Al-Amal would have dire consequences for patients in need of surgical care, intensive care, blood bank and transfusion services, cancer care and dialysis. After nearly 20 months of war triggered by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Gaza is mired in one of the world's gravest humanitarian crises, with civilians enduring relentless bombardment, mass displacement and severe hunger.
