Over 109,600 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine identified by media investigation
Russian independent media outlet Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC Russian service, has confirmed the identities of 109,625 Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine.
The publications' latest report covers the period of February 24, 2022 to May 23, 2025. Since it was last updated at the beginning of May, at least 2,009 Russian soldiers have been confirmed killed.
The journalists note that the actual figures are likely significantly higher, as their verified information comes from public sources such as obituaries, posts by relatives, memorial community tree-plantings, regional media reports, statements from local authorities, among other sources.
The outlet published the complete list of identified casualties for the first time in February, marking three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to the publication, volunteers manually enter and verify each record to prevent duplicate entries in the database.
The confirmed death toll now includes 27,000 volunteers, 17,200 recruited prisoners, and over 12,000 mobilized soldiers, according to the media outlets. Over 5,000 officers have also been confirmed to have been killed.
Russian troops have recently intensity their offensive in Donetsk Oblast, increasingly pressuring a relatively large Ukrainian pocket between some of the last cities in the region. Russia has held the initiative on the battlefield in the Donetsk Oblast since the fall of 2023, after Ukraine's failed summer counteroffensive.

Ukraine's defence minister: Ukraine and partners establish Ramstein initiative on defence production
Ukraine and its partner countries decided to establish a mechanism for defence production, according to an agreement reached at the 28th meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (also known as the Ramstein Format) held on 4 June at NATO headquarters. Details: The defence minister stated that output will be sent to Ukraine for as long as the war continues. Umierov added that the initiative has since expanded during discussions and now involves mutual investment. He said that under this initiative, Ukrainian producers can invest in partner countries, while companies from partner states can build megafactories in Ukraine. This is currently a new idea that is still under development. Umierov said it doesn't yet have an official name and they are calling it the Ramstein Investment to Industries Initiative. He did not specify which countries had expressed interest in such investment cooperation. However, one aspect of the initiative – establishing production in Ukraine – received public support from German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who expressed support for producing long-range weapons in Ukraine. Background: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged partners at the Ramstein meeting to invest more in Ukraine's defence industry. This marks the first time the US secretary of defence has not attended a Ramstein-format meeting. Putin accuses Ukraine of terrorism following fatal train accidents
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of terrorism in relation to two fatal train accidents in Russia over the weekend. "The blow was deliberately aimed at the civilian population," Putin said during a government session in Moscow, according to the state-run TASS news agency. He accused Ukraine of seeking to block talks on an end to the war. Last weekend, two trains suffered accidents in the Kursk and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine after bridges were blown up. Seven people died and dozens were injured in the passenger train derailed near the city of Bryansk. While these accidents were discussed in detail, there was no information on Russian media about the Ukrainian attacks on military airbases using remotely targeted drones. Putin once again rejected calls for a ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, whether for 30 or for 60 days. "Why should they be emboldened by allowing them a break from fighting?" he queried. He also backed Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who has said Russia should continue to hold talks with a view to achieving its war aims. In Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered an immediate ceasefire that should last at least until a meeting with Putin. If no de-escalation emerged from a meeting of this kind, "the ceasefire will end on the same day," he told journalists. Zelensky rejected the memorandum put forward by the Russian side in talks in Istanbul on Monday in which it listed demands for an end to the war. He termed it an ultimatum. Russia's demands could not be met, in particular its territorial demands, he said.

US Embassy in Kyiv warns of continued risk of Russian attacks
The US Embassy in Ukraine issued a warning on 4 June about the growing risk of large-scale Russian attacks. Source: a statement on the embassy's website, as reported by European Pravda Quote: "Russia has increased the intensity of its missile and drone attacks against Ukraine in recent weeks, and there is currently a continued risk of significant air attacks. The US Embassy in Kyiv urges US citizens to exercise appropriate caution. As always, we recommend you be prepared to shelter immediately in the event an air-raid warning is issued." Details: While no specific reason is provided for the warning, it came after a special operation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), codenamed Pavutyna (Spider's Web), during which dozens of Russian aircraft were hit. The last similar warning from the US Embassy was issued on the evening of 9 May, citing the risk of a large-scale air attack "over the next several days". Background: On 1 June 2025, the SSU carried out a special operation codenamed Pavutyna, one of the largest and most complex sabotage operations against Russian military aircraft. The SSU reported that the operation resulted in the destruction of 41 Russian strategic aircraft, including Tu-95, Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 strategic bombers, as well as an A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft. The North Atlantic Alliance has hailed the SSU operation targeting Russian strategic aircraft as highly successful. NATO reported that at least 40 aircraft had been damaged. Between 10 and 13 aircraft were completely destroyed. On 4 June, US President Donald Trump said he had had a "good conversation" with Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, though not one that would "lead to immediate peace". Trump added that Putin "did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields".
