Winter warrior Jimmy The Bear delivers again in Winter Championship Final at Flemington
The Patrick and Michelle Payne -trained winter warrior defied a wide barrier and big weight to win the feature in a blanket finish from Munhamek and Forgot You.
Reigning Winter Championship winner Munhamek motored into contention late as a $41 outsider.
Favourite Oh Too Good travelled outside the leader Magnaspin and looked a winner in the straight but ultimately felt the early race pressure.
Jimmy The Bear has won three of his past five starts and been runner-up twice in brilliant campaign.
'Patrick focuses on this time of year and he's just an old marvel,' Michelle Payne said.
'Big thanks to Mike Hirst (owner breeder Jimmy The Bear and former Racing Victoria chairman) and his support of our stable and family for many, many years.
'He's (Jimmy The Bear) is just an old marvel, his win last start put the writing on the wall … brilliant again today.
'(Jockey) Billy (Egan) did the best from the barrier, caught a bit wide but a nice resting run from where he was.
'He was looking a good chance all the way down the straight but he had to fight for it, as Jimmy does, he doesn't know how to run a bad race and he fought it out well.'

Jimmy The Bear completed a double for the Payne partnership.
'I'm sure Patrick is sitting at home with his arms crossed, very, very happy,' Payne said.
Egan reunited with Jimmy The Bear on Saturday for the first time this campaign and got the result.
Rising star apprentice jockey Tom Prebble had partnered the horse the past four starts but could not finish the job on Saturday due to an untimely suspension.
Egan paid tribute to Prebble after the race.
'Tom Prebble is here on-course, shows he's in the game for all the right reasons,' Egan said.
'He's a good kid, this is one of his favourite horses, so good to see him here.
'I admire Tom in a lot of ways, I wish I could've done what he did when I was his age and had his discipline and his good attitude.'
Egan enjoyed the win on Jimmy The Bear.
'It's a bit like riding a Group (1) winner then, because how much every in the stable loves this horse.'
Egan summed up the situation perfectly on Jimmy The Bear, wide and midfield with a bit of cover.
In doing so, Egan had Oh Too Good in his sights the whole way.
'I was three wide but still probably one off with two inside me there, trying to save as much ground as I could,' Egan said.
'With his big weight, Patrick made a good point, we don't want to be giving (Oh Too Good) too big of a head start, he really wore them down … it was a very tough win.'
Jockey Ben Allen, who rode Oh Too Good, lamented the eventual race shape.
Allen had to use up Oh Too Good early to settle on speed and paid the price late.
'The way I had to ride her I don't think is ideal for her,' Allen said.
'She needs a bit of cover … a bit of a strong head on breeze and she's still learning, so was a bit keen.
'She just felt the pinch late, I still reckon she ran well but she needs circumstances to go her way.'

Nikita Tszyu vs Lulzim Ismaili boxing live updates: ‘Punch from the gods' rocks undercard
A brutal punch sent a boxer to the canvas and ignited the crowd ahead of Nikita Tszyu's boxing return in Sydney on Wednesday night. Welcome to live coverage of Nikita Tszyu's return to the ring after a 12-month hiatus. The son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim, the promising Nikita Tszyu has a 10-0 record to date in his three-year professional boxing career. He is taking on undefeated Macedonian Lulzim Ismaili (12-0) in a super welterweight bout at Sydney's ICC Exhibition Centre. The 27-year-old Tszyu, who goes by the ring name 'The Butcher', demonstrated in the build-up to his first fight since August last year he is a unique character, even among boxers. Tszyu raised plenty of eyebrows when he revealed his wife's placenta in capsule form and breast milk were part of his pre-fight diet. It remains to be seen if the diet helps him get past Ismaili as he continues his quest to become the third boxing world champion in the family. Aussie boxing stars Michael Zerafa and Brock Jarvis are also on the undercard, along with debutant Ashleigh Heal, the daughter of Boomers great Shane Heal.

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick full of praise for departing Port Adelaide mentor Ken Hinkley
Gold Coast Suns mentor Damien Hardwick has described his Port Adelaide counterpart Ken Hinkley as an 'incredible coach' and believes he hasn't received the 'plaudits' he has deserved. Hinkley, 58, will coach Port for the final time on Friday night when the Power meet a ninth-placed Suns team desperate to seal a top-eight berth for the first time in the club's history., While intent on ensuring Hinkley's 13-year Power tenure ends on a losing note at Adelaide Oval, Hardwick is full of admiration for Hinkley. 'Ken's an incredible coach,' said Hardwick, who won an AFL premiership as a Port player in 2004. 'He's a guy I hugely admire, the way he goes about it. It's a shame he hasn't got the plaudits I think that he deserves. 'He's a guy that every time you play Port Adelaide, you know you're up for a hell of a fight, so I think he's done an incredible job.' Hinkley, a former Suns assistant coach, this week said it 'stings a lot' that he was unable to not only guide Port to a flag during his Power stint, but also failed to lead them to a grand final appearance, having lost four preliminary finals. 'You look at the results of a coach, and ultimately your result is to get to a grand final and win a grand final,' he said 'As harsh as that it is, we didn't get there.' Hardwick has got to the promised land as a coach, guiding Richmond to premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also wants to take the Suns to a flag, but his immediate aim is securing finals football. Wins in their final two games of the regular season against Port and next Wednesday at home against Essendon would go a long way towards sealing Gold Coast a top-four berth. However, victory on Friday night will at least ensure they would have locked up a top-eight spot and September action heading into next week's clash with the Bombers. 'It's a two-game season for us,' Hardwick said. 'We're out of the eight at the moment, looking to win both games. 'We'll take one game at a time, but we've got all our eggs in this (Friday night) basket. 'We've got to make sure we play at our very best. There's going to be a lot of emotion around the game, 'You don't get the opportunity to play in those games often, (so) let's enjoy it, let's lean into it.' Victory on Friday would also secure the Suns their first win at Adelaide Oval at their 13th attempt. 'You've got to work you way through it. Every away venue is incredibly tough to play at – it's AFL footy,' Hardwick said. 'Every venue's got it's own challenges and this is no different.'

Tszyu v Ismaili 2025 fight live updates and results
Nikita Tszyu returns to the boxing ring for the first time in 12 months against Lulzim Ismaili tonight at the ICC Theatre in Sydney. Tszyu has had a frustrating year, with a recurring hand injury delaying his comeback. It's one of the biggest talking points ahead of his comeback tonight, with Tszyu hoping he gets through unscathed. In the co-main event, Michael Zerafa fights American Mikey Dahlman. Meanwhile, Sydney fighter Brock Jarvis is also on the card, taking on Sam Beck. If a fight between Tszyu and Zerafa falls apart, Jarvis – who is back training with Jeff Fenech – will step in to fight 'The Butcher'.
