Nobody 2 Review: Bob Odenkirk's Violent Vacation

Yahoo3 days ago
Hutch Mansell might be on vacation, but in Nobody 2, trouble clearly didn't get the memo. It's been four years since Bob Odenkirk got his big break as an action hero in the 2021 film Nobody. This sequel once again follows Hutch (Odenkirk), now fully embracing waking up every day and choosing violence. As this wears on his marriage to Becca (Connie Nielsen), he takes his family, including his wife, dad, son, and daughter on a vacation. But he soon finds himself taking on new foes in a fun action-packed sequel that proves that Odenkirk can still kick ass at 62.
The first Nobody was written by Derek Kolstad, best known for creating the John Wick movies. In many ways, that first movie felt like an early draft of Wick; not as good, but still very entertaining. This sequel has Timo Tjahjanto taking over directorial responsibilities from Ilya Naishuller. Despite Naishuller's strong directorial work, Tjahjanto was a strong pick for this series. Those (like me) familiar with Tjahjanto's work on action thrillers like Headshot and The Night Comes For Us know that he can direct violence. And if there's anything an action movie like Nobody 2 is going to offer, it's tons of splatter-ific glory.
A blood-soaked vacation of violence is what you can expect going into this movie. Much like The Naked Gun, this is the perfect movie to watch if you want to get out of the summer heat and have some fun under the air conditioning of a movie theater for 89 minutes. It's a short, breezy actioner that doesn't overstay its welcome and delivers on all the laughs, punches, guns, and explosions you can expect from a movie that knows exactly what it is and embraces it at every turn.
Like the first movie, you can tell Odenkirk is doing the majority of his stunts himself. It's a trend that we've been seeing a lot lately. If actors like Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, and Ana de Armas are making long wide takes featuring their face and their stunts, other actors are going to want to avoid falling by the wayside. So with Nobody 2, it's action o'clock, and this movie has tons of it. Tjahjanto films everything quite well, not relying much on wides, but always keeping the camera movement dynamic so that we can feel how hard those hits are.
People who frequented the movie theater in the 80s and 90s will be happy to see familiar faces like Christopher Lloyd and Sharon Stone in this movie, as they're both having a lot of fun. Lloyd is entertaining as the slightly crazy grandpa, and Stone gets to chew up the scenery as the villain, Lendina. Is she a great villain? No. She only shows up in the latter half of the movie and doesn't have much to do that's memorable. You can tell Stone read the character description as 'evil villain' and understood the assignment, cranking it up to the max and making an evil character. She's not multi-dimensional, but she didn't have to be.
That's the thing with action movies like Nobody 2. People show up for the action, not for the script. As long as an action film's script isn't outwardly bad, audiences don't really care. What matters is the most important question: Are you having a good time? This movie gives you a good time and a script that's nothing to write home about. Nobody 2 won't be winning any awards for its screenwriting. The dialogue and the character moments exist solely because they have to. Great writing is nowhere to be found in this movie, but that's not what you're here for. You're here to watch guns go bang and explosions go boom. That's what I wanted too. And that's what I got.
So I'll forgive Nobody 2 for being completely unremarkable in the script department. We have some story beats, but for the most part, the script is nothing more than a thin rope that holds a string of action sequences together. We know who the good guys are, and we know who the bad guys are. All that's left to do is watch them fight. There's tons of mileage out of seeing Odenkirk punch bad guys in the face. Action movies can be cathartic in that weird sort of way. Watching bad people get bloodied and bruised is a pastime many will never get sick of.
The best part of Nobody 2? The finale. One of the novelties of this movie is the juxtaposition of a fun family vacation with a violent crime-filled narrative. The town Hutch takes his family to has a lot of crime going on, and part of the joy is the fact that Hutch can't seem to hold himself back from intervening. The last 30 minutes are a delight. A carnival of carnage featuring ball pits, halls of mirrors, and water slides turned deadly. A conveyor belt of stunt performers and practical effects, with our heroes ripping through them all. This movie amps things up a bit from the original, even if the final result is a sequel that doesn't do anything mind-blowing, but gets the job done. Turns out, the only thing more dangerous than Hutch with a gun is Hutch trying to relax.
SCORE: 7/10
As ComingSoon's review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to 'Good.' A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.

Mila Kunis Says She Barely Ate While Preparing For "Black Swan"

This post discusses restrictive eating. Mila Kunis is opening up about the extreme efforts she took to prepare for 2010's Black Swan. Related: Mila notably played Natalie Portman's ballerina rival Lily, and in a new interview with Vogue to celebrate the film's release 15 years ago, she opened up about her grueling routine to achieve the skinny physique required to play her. Mila said, "My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating — which I know you're not supposed to say, but it's the truth. I drank a lot of broth and danced for 12 hours a day." Related: The actor, who stands 5'4," previously revealed that she got down to just 95 pounds so she would "look skinny" enough to convincingly play a ballerina. "Because I'm not a ballerina, I have to get on point within three months, and so to get on point, you almost have to fake it," she told Howard Stern in 2016. "So, the best way to fake it is to unfortunately look like it." "I smoked a lot of cigarettes and I ate a limited amount of calories," Mila added, specifying that she survived on an average of 1,200 calories a day. She told Howard that she had since stopped smoking, and although she insisted she lost the weight "in the healthiest way possible," she said she wouldn't recommend her regimen to anyone. "I don't advocate this at all," she stated. "It was awful." Related: In the Vogue interview, Mila also opened up about other challenges while filming, including the physical toll that dancing eventually took on her body. She said, "We would shoot those dancing scenes for hours, and I had bruises all over my ribs just from being lifted over and over again. I also dislocated my shoulder pretty early in the production and thought I was completely screwed, but [director] Darren [Aronofsky] sent me to an acupuncturist and I somehow came out totally fine." Related: According to her, Natalie also suffered an injury on set while shooting the scene of Lily being pushed into a mirror. Natalie told Vogue she "completely blacked that out" and did not have "a hint of a memory" of it, but Mila recalled, "You were scarred up all around your neck." Natalie Portman Reveals Why Filming the ‘Black Swan' Sex Scene With Mila Kunis Made Them ‘Nervous'

In 2010, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis rocked the movie theaters with their psychological ballet thriller, Black Swan. The film won Portman an Oscar for Best Actress, and it's hard to believe that 15 years have passed since the women stepped into the physically and mentally challenging roles. Portman and Kunis are now looking back on their time working on director Darren Aronofsky's project for Vogue — and of course, that steamy sex scene between them. Portman admitted it was 'the only scene that was quite hard to shoot.' More from SheKnows Alison Brie & Dave Franco's Hot Take on Hollywood's Controversial Intimacy Coordinator Conversation 'I learned that it's fun to work with your friend until you have to film a sex scene with them,' recalled Portman. 'I remember Darren being like, 'You guys only have to do it once and you won't have to do it again.'' Aronofsky might have made it sound like a walk in the park, but Portman revealed that they 'were both standing in the room like [heavy, nervous breathing] until Darren yelled action, and we just went for it.' The good news is that the director 'kept his word' and only made them film that scene once. Still, Portman remembered her hesitations, 'But that was definitely the one scene where I remember getting to set and thinking, 'I don't feel good about this.'' Kunis has a much different recollection about the sex scene, though. 'To tell you the truth, I completely forgot about that scene,' she laughed, per Vogue. 'I was just quickly thinking through the movie like, 'Hmm what was hard?' I totally blocked that out.' The film was notable to Portman because she also met Benjamin Millepied on the set of Black Swan. At the time, he was a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet when he worked on the movie. His relationship with Portman started while he was reportedly still living with American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston. Portman and Millepied married in August 2012 and share two children: son Aleph, 14, and daughter Amalia, 8. Denzel Washington's Addresses ‘Black Panther 3' Rumors: ‘That's Between Me and Ryan'

While there's no shortage of Marvel movies drawing buzz currently, one specifically that's still a bit far off is the Ryan Coogler-directed Black Panther 3. The popular series draws interest regardless of the topic, but the buzz was louder after Denzel Washington's name began circling as a potential addition to the third movie. Coogler has addressed the topic of Washington joining Black Panther 3 previously, admitting he had written a part for the Training Day and The Book of Eli star. Now, Washington responded to the topic of his potential inclusion in the Marvel film during a recent interview with ScreenRant. Denzel Washington Gives 5-Word Response to 'Black Panther' Buzz While speaking about Washington's role in Spike Lee's new film Highest 2 Lowest, the topic of Coogler and the Black Panther 3 rumors came up. As ScreenRant highlighted, Coogler had previously confirmed that Washington signed on to join the third Black Panther movie; however, Washington refused to give anything away. "That's between me and Ryan," Washington replied. Call it Marvel's continued push to keep big news about upcoming movies under wraps, or Washington simply opting out of giving a potentially huge confirmation. Regardless of the reason, the popular actor had no interest in fueling the fire around his Black Panther inclusion rumors. Ryan Coogler and Denzel Washington's Previous 'Black Panther' Comments Although Washington wouldn't reveal much during his recent interview about the potential inclusion in Black Panther 3, he and Coogler have both spoken about the topic publicly before. Coogler, who directed one of the year's most popular films, Sinners, has offered high praise to Washington on several occasions. However, it was Washington, while on Australia's Today show in 2024, who first spoke about the Black Panther 3 role, as Entertainment Weekly revealed. "I don't know how many more films I'm gonna make, probably not that many. I want to do things I haven't done. I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70,' he said, referring to the 2025 Broadway rendition with costar Jake Gyllenhaal. 'After that, I am playing Hannibal," he continued. "After that, I've been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler's writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I'm gonna do the film Othello. After that, I'm gonna do King Lear. After that, I'm gonna retire." Then came Coogler's comments during an interview on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony. When asked if there was a role specifically in mind for Washington in Black Panther 3 and if Coogler had been writing him in for it, the director responded, "Yeah, all of that, all of the above." "There's no fiction out there about that..." Coogler said. "... Denzel is family at this point...I think he's the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture? Forget about it, man." After adding that Washington said "a truthful thing, there's no lies," he admitted the two have spoken about it for "a long time." "I've been talking to him about this for a long time. I was surprised when he mentioned it, but it's not like it's not true," Coogler said of Washington mentioning a role in Black Panther Washington's Addresses 'Black Panther 3' Rumors: 'That's Between Me and Ryan' first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 11, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
