How to stop pesky wasps ruining your BBQ – from the perfumes and outfit colours to avoid to clever DIY garden hacks
The UK is experiencing a surge in numbers of the yellow and black pests, with the current hot weather creating favourable conditions for the winged stingers to thrive.
5
Pest control company Rentokil reported a 618 per cent increase in people requesting assistance with the winged insects compared to last year.
But with an estimated 7,000 species in the UK, how can you get them to leave you alone this summer?
Here Laura Stott offers ways to get wasps to buzz off – with some advice from Daniel Steward from Shield Pest Control.
PEST-PROOFING
TO minimise problems in your domestic environment, there are practical steps you can take that will prevent wasps from getting comfortable in your home.
Daniel says: 'Always keep bins – especially those for food and garden waste – tightly sealed with secure lids and clean them regularly.
'Avoid leaving sweet drinks, fruit, meat or pet food outside as these are highly attractive to wasps.
'Seal up any small holes or gaps in lofts, sheds and brickwork to stop wasps from nesting in or around your home.
'Simple caulk or sealant found in any DIY store is ideal for plugging any gaps.'
WEAR RED
THE colours you wear could impact your chances of being bothered by bugs.
Wasps are attracted to bright, bold hues and patterns. Yellow and white tones are more likely to attract as they are similar to the nectar and pollen hues the stingers like to seek out.
Any floral patterns are best avoided for the same reasons.
Dark colours like navy, black and blue should lead to less bother. Or opt for a red outfit – wasps can't recognise this colour, meaning there's more chance they will leave you alone.
DON'T FLAP
SHRIEKING or flapping might feel natural when a wasp zooms towards you. But wafting them away is actually one of the worst things you can do.
Daniel advises: 'Never swat at them as this can make them more aggressive and increase the risk of being stung.'
Wasps may perceive sudden movements like flailing arms as a threat or attack which can provoke them – it's the last thing you want.
If one flies towards you, stay still and don't panic.
If you need to move away, do so slowly and remain calm to lessen the chance of being pursued.
WASP WINS
5
WHILE venomous wasps can seem hard to love when they are plaguing your picnic, it is worth remembering they aren't all bad news and do hold a valuable place in the ecosystem.
The insects are natural predators to lots of other pests including greenflies, spiders and other creepy-crawlies.
They also have a valuable role to play as pollinators. So try to keep these positives in mind next time they swarm towards your lunch.
TRAP TRICKS
5
DIY wasp traps are an easy and effective way of luring the insects out of your space.
They work by using something like sugar water to tempt them into a container that they then can't get out of.
They are so simple to make yourself without much fuss.
Just cut a two-litre bottle of soda in half and then invert the half with the neck to make a funnel shape, and then hang it from a tree or fence.
Alternatively, there are plenty of cheap options for sale online and in garden centres.
CAFFEINE KICK
DON'T chuck away your used coffee grounds – as, believe it or not, they can help deter those pesky yellow and black critters.
Once removed from a cafetiere and dried out (or fresh from the packet if you can spare some), simply place a few heaped tablespoons into a heat-safe dish – a washed-out tin of beans would work – and carefully ignite the grounds using a match or lighter.
As they start to smoke, they release caffeine and a strong smell which repels wasps.
This is an ideal tip if you're hosting a barbecue at home, as while most humans are unoffended by the scent of smoking coffee, wasps hate it – as do mosquitos!
DECOY NESTS
5
DANIEL suggests hanging decoy nests to deter wasps, as they are territorial and may avoid areas they believe to be occupied by a colony.
You can buy this one from Robert Dyas for £9.99 – or make your own.
All you need is a brown paper bag, scissors, tape, string and an old copy of The Sun.
Crumple the bag into a ball to give it some texture, recreating that of a real nest.
Then stuff some balled-up pages of newspaper inside to puff it out.
Cinch the end shut, secure it with tape and use the string to hang it wherever you're entertaining and want to be left alone.
PUT A LID ON IT
THERE is little you can do to prevent wasps being attracted to your food and drink, but there are simple steps you can take to minimise interruption.
Daniel advises: 'Always cover any beverages or food stuffs.'
Try using foil, silicone seals or keeping items in fridges or cupboards and not leaving them out in the open.
The best way to keep the insects off items is to form a physical barrier to prevent them from getting into it.
Keep lids and caps on and pour drinks into cups rather than sipping from open cans or containers to avoid being attacked by any uninvited guests who might be lurking in your tipple.
Wipe up spills immediately, especially sugary ones.

Expert reveals gifting etiquette for good grades and the best unique buys to treat A-level students on results day
Daily Mail journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission - learn more Students across the UK are celebrating an incredible year for A-level results - after scoring record top grades outside of the pandemic years. The scores will, undoubtedly, be a cause for celebration for many, as parents of the youngsters now gearing up for university look for the perfect gift to mark the milestone occasion. However, when it comes to congratulating graduates with a present, said etiquette expert Jo Hayes, a few pointers can help add even more joy to the day. If you're on the hunt for a gift that's both thoughtful and useful, Jo told Femail the most important starting point is to consider your child's interests. 'You might like the biography of Warren Bugget, but would they?' she said. 'Consider what their likes and dislikes.' Further, if you have more than one A-leveller at home, 'ensure your gifts remain relatively equal as each goes through their' results - even if one does better than the other. Other than that, Jo added, look for supplies, accessories, and appliances that might be useful as your child embarks on a new adventure at what is hopefully their university of choice. From essentials like mattress protectors and bed linen to nifty gadgets that are also cost-effective, here's the ultimate guide to A-level worthy gifts your child will cherish forever: Comfortable bedding It's a university essential your child will forever be grateful for, so treat them to new bedding sets before the start of term in a few weeks. A fresh duvet and duvet cover, with matching sheets and pillowcases, is a fuss-free yet really thoughtful gift that also signifies the start of a new chapter. Get Laid Beds offers an all-in-one bedding bundle, comprising a duvet cover, fitted sheet, and pillowcases, in 100 per cent cotton that will transform your child's dorm room into an oasis of calm amidst the excitement of university. A good mattress protector is also an investment worth making to ensure - we love one with dual benefits, like this waterproof version from Panda London that also has cooling qualities for those hot summer months. Bedding Bundle £45.00 Shop Premium bath and body sets Luxurious bath and body sets from brands like Aesop, Sol de Janeiro, and Space NK are sure to earn you some brownie points. While they may not be the most exciting present, your child will eternally be grateful for the treat that will also save them a few pounds on their weekly shop every month. Space NK's three-in-one Caribbean Shores Pamper Set consists of a deliciously fragrant body wash, with scents of mandarin, coconut and jasmine, as well as a body oil and scrub for a spa-like experience on a student budget. Sol De Janeiro's Bum Bum Jet set is TikTok-approved, which means it's highly likely your child has their eyes on it anyway. Space NK Caribbean Shores Body Duo £40.00 Shop Mini Air Fryer While no uni experience is complete without late-night instant noodles, your child might appreciate a mini air fryer for hassle-free meals on nights they're staying in. While they won't break the bank, compact variants of the universally-beloved appliance have 1.5L capacities and are perfect for cooking small, healthy dinners for one. The MY Compact Air Fryer from The Range is currently discounted to £24.99 and is a great addition to any student flat. Its salient features include a 60-minute digital timer, adjustable temperature control up to 200 degrees celsius, and a removable, non-stick frying tray that makes cleaning up a breeze. MY Compact Air Fryer £24.99 Shop A tech upgrade Jo told Femail that a new phone or iPhone is a great uni gift - depending on how much you're willing and able to spend. Perhaps a few family members could contribute towards this more expensive present that may be just the thing your A-leveller deserves. Bags and laptop cases Aligning with this theme of helpful uni things, but at a lower price point, Jo continued, a laptop case, trendy new tote bag or a nice leather backpack is also an excellent option. You could go the extra mile and have these embossed with your child's initials for a special touch. Folio Laptop Case £36.99 Shop Gift card The universal gift that is the gift card is not as 'impersonal' as some people claim, Jo said. 'It's a super practical, and greatly appreciated gift, that is always received better than something the recipient doesn't want or need. 'Be it a "cash card" or a gift card to their favourite store, they'll love it,' she added. A coffee machine While splashier versions of this home appliance can cost upwards of £100, there are budget-friendly alternatives that will help elevate your child's accommodation - while saving them splurging on £4 coffees every morning. The Happy Cream coffee machine from boss is currently over 50 per cent off, down to £34.99 from £79.99. Jo recommended pairing it with a 12-month supply of pods or coffee beans. Barista & Co One Brew Single Coffee Maker £18.20 Experiences The etiquette expert added that gifting your child a special experience - by giving them concert tickets to watch one of their favourite artists, for instance - can also gbe very special and meaningful. Other options include a weekend getaway, High Tea at the Claridge's Hotel or Fortnum & Mason's Diamond Jubilee Salon. You can add a thoughtfully worded, handwritten card and a bouquet of flowers to 'express your admiration for their academic efforts', Jo said. When choosing flowers, opt for blooms like daisies, lillies, carnatios, or tulips, she concluded.

These are the flattering hair colours you should try for a fresher look... and the ageing ones you should skip, says top stylist ANNA LEE
Maybe it's September 'back to school' days being drilled into us since childhood or maybe it's the changing of the seasons. Either way, autumn always brings out the urge to do something dramatic with our hair colour. But while most of us have fallen victim to a bad, impulse-bought box dye, a proper hair refresh needs careful consideration and planning. Not least because hair colour trends are constantly changing, and a few shades or colour placement can be the difference between a stunning hue and a shade that ages you.

Helen Skelton shows off her toned figure in a bikini at the pool with her children - after 'cooling off' romance with Gethin Jones
Helen Skelton showed off her toned figure in a bikini as she spent some time at a local pool with her children. The TV presenter, 42, who is said to have recently 'cooled off her romance with fellow TV star Gethin Jones, enjoyed a dip in the middle of the heatwave. Giving an insight into how she had spent the school holidays with her children so far, Helen shared a montage of clips to Instagram on Thursday. She shares three children, Ernie, nine, Louis, eight, and Elsie, four, with her ex-husband, Richie Myler. In the first clip, Helen held out an inflatable in the pool as her daughter jumped off the edge and into the water. She captioned the post: 'Water babies. Community pools and shallow streams for the heatwave win.' The TV presenter, 42, who is said to have recently 'cooled off her romance with fellow TV star Gethin Jones, enjoyed a dip in the middle of the heatwave Elsewhere, Gethin was spotted on celebrity dating app Raya after calling time on his romance with Helen. The Morning Live hosts have grown increasingly close in recent months after spending time with each other outside work, including a steamy spa break. MailOnline revealed in May how the pair's 'flirty' on screen chemistry had 'blossomed' into a deeper connection and they were seen acting like a 'couple' at charity event last year courtesy of their 'tactile' behaviour towards each other. And to add extra intrigue to their secret romance, the hosts' respective reps both refused to comment on the duo's relationship after being quizzed amid reports they were spotted leaving the BAFTA TV awards together. However, Gethin, 47, has delivered a blow to Morning Live viewers eager for the presenter and Helen to go public with their romance. The rugby fan has changed the location of his Raya profile to alert prospective suitors he's in Australia, where he was watching the British and Irish Lions with a group of male pals a few weeks ago. An insider said: 'Gethin is on the prowl Down Under which puts the nail in the coffin for his romance with Helen. 'He's there with pals but keen to meet other women. There is no way Helen would stand for that if they were together and he has far too much respect for her to even go behind her back.' Elsewhere, Gethin was spotted on celebrity dating app Raya after calling time on his romance with Helen They added: 'Despite having an increasingly close connection it's cooled down significantly which is gutting for fans who really wanted them to be together.' Daily Mail contacted their representatives for comment at the time. Helen has been single since her high profile 2022 break up from husband Richie Myler, the father of her three children. The rugby league player was married to Helen for nine years with the former Strictly star writing on Instagram that she was very 'sad' he had 'left the family home'. Richie has since moved on with Stephanie Thirkill, the daughter of Leeds Rhinos president Andrew Thirkill, and they have welcomed two children, Olivia and Freddie.
