Drake Maye's seven-word reaction to UDFA receiver's rise in practice
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye had high praise for undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Efton Chism III.
The former Eastern Washington standout has generated a lot of buzz in the spring practices by catching nearly everything thrown in his direction. It should come as no surprise considering he had 120 receptions for 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns in his final college season.
The 120 catches broke former Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp's record.
There was one OTAs practice period in particular where Chism caught 7-of-7 passes thrown in his direction. His ability to consistently get open and make plays is making an early impression on the Patriots, including the second-year quarterback.
'Chis had like 50 catches in OTAs,' said Maye.
Chism is quickly showing that he belongs at the NFL level despite being a clear underdog as an undrafted rookie. He is making a case for a spot on the 53-man roster before training camp even begins.

Ohio State Reacts to TreVeyon Henderson's NFL Preseason Touchdown

Ohio State Reacts to TreVeyon Henderson's NFL Preseason Touchdown originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots bolstered their running back room in the 2025 NFL draft, selecting Ohio State standout TreVeyon Henderson with the No. 38 overall pick. As the start of the 2025 NFL season quickly approaches, Henderson continues to prove himself as a viable starting running back option at the next level. The second round pick currently sits No. 2 on the Patriots' depth chart, but could find himself in the starting position sooner rather than later. Henderson continued to impress in Saturday's preseason matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The 22-year-old running back opened up the scoring with his first career rushing touchdown from inside the 10-yard line. The Buckeyes took to social media to react to this accomplishment on Saturday. "Touchdown Trey is back in action," the team wrote on X. While this touchdown marked Henderson's first rushing score, it's not his touchdown in the league. In the Patriots' preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, the former Ohio State running back notched a 100-yard kickoff return on his first NFL touch. He finished that 48-18 win with three catches for 12 yards and one carry for 18 yards. In his final collegiate season with the Buckeyes, Henderson notched 1,016 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground — leading the Big Ten with 7.1 yards per carry. He also reeled in 27 catches for 284 yards and one touchdown in Ohio State's national championship season. The Patriots will close out their preseason schedule with a matchup against the New York Giants on Aug. 21. New England's 2025 regular season will begin with a Week 1 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sep. 7. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Patriots Insider Shuts Down Possibility Of Major Addition Before Week 1

After two preseason games, the Patriots have as much positive momentum as anybody. The team won both of its preseason games so far and has enjoyed breakout performances from several players this summer. The team made several impact additions this summer, and adding Mike Vrabel as the head coach could be the biggest move of all. As a result, BetMGM has the team's win total at 8.5 games, which is more than double the number of games the team won last year. Looking at this roster, it isn't hard to see why expectations are so high. Drake Maye impressed as a rookie and should only get better in his sophomore season. The team looks to have a two-headed monster at running back with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, and the wide receiver room is loaded with talent. On defense, the team could have one of the best corner tandems in the league with Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis II. Milton Williams was added to the defensive line as well, and paired with Christian Barmore, gives the team a fearsome front. It makes sense then that the team reportedly feels good about the roster ahead of Week 1. Insider Dianna Russini reported on Tuesday that the Patriots are unlikely to make another big move before the opener. 'The Patriots- like every team- are constantly looking for possible ways to improve their roster,' said Russini. 'But from conversations I've been having, I don't sense that New England is close on a deal for any of the NFL's disgruntled stars at this time.' This is a notable report considering the history between Russini and Vrabel. If the Patriots really aren't interested in more splashy moves, then that means we have a good idea already of what the final roster will look like. Trey Hendrickson, Cameron Heyward, Terry McLaurin, and Micah Parsons are just some of the big-name players who are reportedly unhappy in their current situations. McLaurin and Parsons, in particular, would be interesting additions for the Patriots, but as Russini reported, a move isn't likely at this time. Browns PFF Grades: How did the defense perform against the Philadelphia Eagles?

It was a very successful day for the Cleveland Browns' defense in their second preseason game. Without the starters, many of the depth players were able to get meaningful reps against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Browns' defense only surrendered one touchdown, which was set up by a Dillon Gabriel fumble at the Cleveland 31-yard line. Most of the Browns' success came from a dominant performance by the defensive line. This was well represented in the defensive PFF grades from the game, which included five defensive linemen scoring in the top ten overall grades. The Browns had four players with overall PFF grades of 80.0 or higher. Among them were projected starting defensive end Isaiah McGuire, with an 86.7, and linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, with an 84.3. Cleveland's secondary was also represented thanks to the performance of strong safety Donovan McMillon, who earned an impressive 79.6 overall grade in his 37 snaps played. Now, let's take a look at the PFF top 10 overall graded players on the Browns' defense against the Eagles: CB Christian Holmes Overall grade: 87.0 Coverage grade: 85.9 DE Isaiah McGuire Overall grade: 86.7 Run defense grade: 65.1 Pass rush grade: 81.4 LB Easton Mascarenas-Arnold Overall grade: 86.7 Run defense grade: 65.1 Pass rush grade: 81.4 LB Jerome Baker Overall grade: 81.0 Run defense grade: 78.3 Coverage grade: 63.8 SS Donovan McMillon Overall grade: 79.6 Run defense grade: 69.7 Coverage grade: 73.9 DT Jowonn Briggs Overall grade: 79.1 Run defense grade: 79.0 Pass rush grade: 58.5 DT Adin Huntington Overall grade: 78.1 Run defense grade: 60.3 Pass rush grade: 76.2 DT Shelby Harris Overall grade: 78.1 Run defense grade: 62.2 Pass rush grade: 79.7 DE Julian Okwara Overall grade: 73.4 Run defense grade: 74.7 Pass rush grade: 60.5 CB Myles Harden Overall grade: 73.1 Run defense grade: 69.3 Coverage grade: 68.6
