What's cooking with Perhebat: Sewing and brewing as soldiers return to civilian life
Senior Warrant Officer (Rtd) P. Maygala, 41, who served in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) until her retirement last year (2024), said her feminine intuition persuaded her to study business management as a second career in the Transition Training programme, organised by the Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat).
'Many people ask me why tailoring and not other fields such as security ... my answer is simply that I am a woman, a mother, so the feminine spirit prevails despite the military discipline. Even before joining the army, I helped my mother at her tailoring shop,' she told Bernama after the Perhebat Certificate presentation here today by Commander of the RMN Reserve Force, First Admiral Azhar Adam.
Maygala, who has served for 21 years including joining the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force, thanked the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and Perhebat.
'Having just graduated and receiving the certificate today, I will join my mother's clothing business in Johor Bahru by the end of the year,' she said.
Another Perhebat graduate, Corporal (Rtd) Helmi Mohd Balawi, 43, said he would open a coffee-based cafe armed with the knowledge he gained from Perhebat 'sTransition Training.
With his simmering interest in coffee, he wants to have a meaningful life while generating income after retirement.
'I served in the Johor Military Force (JMF) for 26 years, so I have no other skills. That's why I joined the Perhebat's Transition Training so that I can adapt to civilian life,' he said.
Meanwhile, First Admiral Azhar said the MAF and Perhebat would increase their cooperation with the private sector to provide more job opportunities.
According to him, eight new memorandums of understanding and agreements have been signed by the MAF in 2025 to support human capital development of MAF retirees and veterans to explore new fields.
'Besides teaching business to produce entrepreneurs, we are shifting our focus to the field of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of military assets with specialised training.
'This Transition Training has churned out a total of 3,473 MAF retirees while five JMF retirees have received certificates. A total of 514 personnel and veterans have also been awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma,' Azhar added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will modernise its defence system by incorporating drone technology as part of a comprehensive upgrade plan, with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) set to receive its first batch of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) beginning in 2026. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 5) that the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) had already begun enhancing its operational capabilities under the Fourth Dimension of MAF development plan, which aims to ensure the military remains formidable and respected. 'As part of this roadmap, we are modernising our defence assets, including UAV-related equipment. 'MAF already possesses such capabilities across all service branches - the army, navy and air force - to support both domestic and international military operations,' he said in response to a question from Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH–Tebrau). He added that the RMAF will receive the UAVs from Turkiye under the first phase, with additional acquisitions planned in the 13th Malaysia Plan as part of the air force's broader strategy. 'These procurements are prioritised through several strategic measures, including deliberations by the Armed Forces Development Committee and the Chiefs of Services Committee, to ensure alignment with the Future Forces Development Phase from 2026 to 2030,' he explained. He said the integration of UAVs and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is expected to enhance Malaysia's defence strength across land, sea and air domains - from firepower and mobility to communication, logistics and aerial surveillance. Responding to Puah's supplementary question on whether the ministry was open to collaboration with Turkiye and China to develop indigenous UAVs, Adly confirmed that efforts were already underway. 'In 2024, our defence research institute began working with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on this initiative. 'Stride (Malaysia's Defence Ministry R&D Agency) has been the lead developer in this area, and we are identifying more local industry players to complete the ecosystem needed to support a domestic drone defence industry,' he said. He also noted that the Defence Minister had recently visited Turkiye to explore deeper cooperation in drone and UAV technologies. Asked by Commander (R) Nordin Ahmad Ismail (PN–Lumut) about the military's view on adopting kamikaze drones, Adly said the ministry sees its importance in modern warfare. 'As for kamikaze drones, while our current procurement does not include them, we acknowledge their growing role in modern warfare, beyond surveillance and reconnaissance,' he said. Adly added that Malaysia was not dismissing any potential defence technologies. 'Moving forward, we will continue strengthening the domestic drone industry as part of our national defence and sovereignty agenda,' he said.

Home minister: 13MP allocates RM51b to strengthen security as pillar of Malaysia's stability and progress
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) proves the government's commitment to making security the main pillar of the country's stability and progress, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the large fund would drive various important initiatives including the modernisation of security operations and improving the welfare of frontline personnel. 'With the allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector, this is a clear signal that the government recognises security as a pillar of the country's stability and progress,' he said in a statement today. He also expressed appreciation for the government's serious emphasis on the welfare of security personnel, including the provision of quarters for them, involving more than 82,000 units in various phases of construction and renovation. 'The provision of 1,368 new Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) quarters and 3,088 Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) quarters has been completed, plus another 8,501 units are being built and 69,141 existing quarters are being renovated, which is a meaningful step in safeguarding the well-being of personnel and their families,' he said. He said the ongoing efforts in the 13MP to improve infrastructure, facilities and support for security personnel are very welcome and deserve to be praised because they pave the way for the excellent performance of the personnel. 'We cannot expect our security forces to serve efficiently and dedicatedly if their basic needs such as comfortable housing, a conducive environment and social need are neglected,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry also welcomed the government's efforts to modernise the country's immigration system through the National Integrated Immigration System and the use of advanced technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) which is deemed timely in facing current security challenges. PM: Govt unveils inclusive development agenda under 13MP to support women, PWDs and seniors through education and jobs
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The government will continue to empower vulnerable groups, including women, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens, through various initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), with a focus on education, skills training and participation in the labour market. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is focused on the educational needs of PWDs, noting that as of June, nearly 171,000 children in this group, including those with autism, have been recorded as having learning difficulties. 'Therefore, initiatives will continue under the 13MP to expand special education facilities and capacity for vulnerable groups nationwide. This includes the construction of the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) blocks at 34 schools across Malaysia. 'In addition, the construction of new schools equipped with PPKI facilities will also continue,' he said when tabling the plan in the Dewan Rakyat here today. The 13MP, themed 'Redesigning Development', outlines the country's five-year development agenda from 2026 to 2030. Anwar also said that adequate support and training will be provided through initiatives such as the Industry-based Academy programme, the National PWD Action Plan and employer incentives, aimed at increasing the participation of senior citizens, Orang Asli and PWDs in the labour market. He said the mandatory retirement age will also be reviewed to align with the country's transition into an ageing nation. Meanwhile, Anwar said the national KASIH Keluarga Negara agenda, anchored on the development of Madani values, will be implemented to strengthen family institutions, which includes reinforcing the role of men as leaders, protectors, defenders, educators and primary breadwinners of the family. 'To support efforts to raise the female labour force participation rate to 60 per cent, including among mothers with young children, the government will expand access to quality childcare centres and provide appropriate training,' he added. Anwar also emphasised that the government will reinforce the third sector (non-profit, voluntary organisations) to work alongside the government in empowering the vulnerable and target groups, as it can offer more inclusive and community-based opportunities for entrepreneurship, employment and skills training. '…the resilience of the third sector will be solidified through training and advisory services. Alternative financing sources for the sector will be expanded through social sukuk, waqf funds, zakat, crowdfunding and blended finance, including the involvement of government-linked companies, government-linked investment companies, the private sector and the strengthening of the cooperative movement,' he added. — Bernama
