Amit Shah in Kolkata: TMC demands Shah to quit over Pahalgam
The Trinamool Congress has demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over the Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir, and called on the senior BJP leader to take responsibility for 'all the failures' that led to the terrorist attack.
Amit Shah, who was on a two-day visit to Kolkata, held a meeting with state BJP leaders and party workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, on Sunday. He hailed PM Narendra Modi for 'deciding to carry out Operation Sindoor' and came down heavily on the TMC and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for 'appeasement', which he also blamed for infiltration from Bangladesh.
The TMC, meanwhile, accused Shah of playing politics in the name of Operation Sindoor at a time when TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee is part of a multi-party delegation of MPs, who have been sent to foreign countries to appraise governments abroad regarding the strikes in Pakistan.
'The Home Minister has to take responsibility for all the failures, and must resign. He has alleged that we have spoken against Operation Sindoor, but we have not said anything against it…He said our leader (Mamata) should ensure that there is no infiltration, but it is the BSF who is guarding… The Home Minister … is a failure,' said state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. 'Pahalgam he had no information, due to their negligence so many died, have they caught all the terrorists? Not one, Jammu and Kashmir police belongs to whom?'
TMC MP Sagarika Ghose said, 'The Home Minister has come to Bengal and acts like a BJP worker, using cheap language against our CM. Would any Opposition leader be allowed to talk like this?… Divisiveness is his politics… He is talking about infiltration, can he say how infiltration took place in Pahalgam? He has failed as a Home Minister and must resign.'
She alleged, 'BJP is the biggest 'washing machine' that cleans away corruption cases… all ED cases are in opposition-ruled states… Suvendu Adhikari, sitting beside Shah has also been washed in the same machine.'
'What have you done for women? In the RG Kar case, the state police caught the culprit, what about Hathras, Unnao in UP? Do not play with women,' Bhattacharya said. 'BJP should stop the crocodile tears and should give West Bengal the money that is pending.'
TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar hit out at Shah alleging that he is 'dreaming that BJP will come to power in Bengal in 2026'. '…They have come to sell sindoor, the PM had come two days back now the home minister has come. Sindoor is the pride of married woman in India, be careful your hands will burn,' Dastidar said.

Punjab CM Mann draws flak for ‘one nation, one husband' remark post Op Sindoor
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday hit out at the BJP, accusing the saffron party of politicising Operation Sindoor for electoral gains. The BJP was quick to get back at him and demanded he apologise and resign for making light of the military operation launched on May 7 to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which the husbands of Hindu women tourists, identified by their sindoor, were targeted. Replying to a question about the BJP campaign for the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly byelection, Mann accused the party of making a mockery of Indian traditions for votes. Alluding to reports that BJP workers are distributing sindoor (vermillion) to households following the success of Operation Sindoor, Mann remarked: 'Will you wear sindoor in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is this One Nation, One Husband?' The BJP denied any such drive to win over voters and its leaders, including Pritpal Singh Balliawal, termed the CM's remarks 'shameful'. BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta is contesting against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee and MP Sanjeev Arora, Congress's Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parupkar Singh Ghumman for the Ludhiana West assembly seat. Describing Mann's remarks as 'vulgarity dressed as leadership', the BJP demanded Mann's resignation. 'He didn't insult the BJP. He insulted every widow of a soldier, every mother of a martyr, every woman of Bharat. And now a question to (AAP national convener) Arvind Kejriwal: Do you support your CM mocking sindoor, a sacred symbol worn by your own wife? Or will you stay silent just to protect your politics? Mann must resign and apologise to the nation,' the party posted on X, adding 'He can't grasp the meaning of sindoor — a symbol of love, sacrifice, and strength for every Indian woman.'

Calcutta HC directs state to produce case diary in Panoli arrest, posts bail prayer hearing on June 5
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal government to produce the case diary in connection with the arrest of law student Sharmistha Panoli on June 5, when her interim bail prayer will be heard again. The vacation bench of Justice Partha Sarathi Mukherjee directed that the Garden Reach police station case in connection with which Ms. Panoli was arrested will be investigated, while proceedings in all other FIRs in this regard will remain stayed till further orders. The court said that the State will ensure that no further case will be registered on the alleged action of Ms. Panoli. The court directed the State to produce the case diary on the next date of hearing on June 5. Justice Mukherjee observed that one must be careful in making comments in public in a diverse country like India. Petitioner Panoli's lawyer claimed that no offence is made out in the complaint filed against her for allegedly making some remarks on social media during the Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. He claimed that there was a war of words on social media between users across India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, which was undertaken by India in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 men, most of whom were tourists. It was stated that the complaint before the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata claimed that Ms. Panoli's comments on social media hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community and caused disharmony among people. He prayed for quashing of the FIR against Panoli and sought grant of bail to her, claiming that no notice was served to her for appearing before the police for investigation into the complaint. Ms. Panoli's lawyer, stating that the complaint does not specify what had been said in her social media comments, claimed that it does not disclose any cognisable offence. He stated that the complaint was filed on May 15 and two days later, a warrant of arrest was obtained by the police. He submitted before the court that Ms. Panoli's family had also complained to the police that she was under threat and that the alleged offensive post had been taken off from the social media on May 8 after having posted it on May 7 night. The law student was arrested by the Kolkata Police from Gurugram, and was remanded to judicial custody by a Kolkata court till June 13. It was claimed by her lawyer that at least four FIRs were filed in different police stations in the state. Appearing for the state, senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee submitted that the complaint contains cognisable offence and that the alleged post contained an offensive video apart from text. He stated that Ms. Panoli's bail petition was rejected by the magistrate of the lower court and was remanded to judicial custody.
