Communist parties now ‘slaves' of DMK: EPS
AIADMK
general secretary Edapaddi K Palaniswami on Thursday accused communist parties of becoming 'slaves' of
DMK
in Tamil Nadu and 'not realising that they are losing their own identities.'
He was speaking at Rajapalayam, Srivilliputhur and Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district on Thursday in continuation of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign. "They have to get chief minister
M K Stalin
's permission even to speak out against caste killing and the need for a separate law. Parties in alliance should be free to voice concerns and problems of the people. But the communist parties have gradually turned into 'slaves' of DMK and may eventually be swallowed by it in the near future," said Palaniswami.
"Alliance and ideologies are two different concepts, but DMK is not able to comprehend this. In Kerala, communist parties and Congress oppose each other though they may be in alliance here. But, DMK, through INDIA alliance, has been silencing criticism from alliance parties," said EPS. He said DMK failed to look into people's issues in the last four years but is suddenly able to resolve many grievances through 'Ungaludan Stalin' camps.

"If the grievances submitted in the 'Ungaludan Stalin' camps are being resolved on an immediate basis, why was it not dealt with all these months? People will not be cheated by such tricks," added Palaniswami. During his public meeting in Sivakasi, EPS promised to protect the fireworks industry and livelihoods of firecracker unit workers. "It was the AIADMK govt in the past that actively supported the fireworks industry and the lakhs who depend on it.
It even took up the matter with the Centre and fought in the Supreme Court to ensure the industry was not shut down and prevent a complete ban on fireworks," he said.
Earlier, EPS interacted with workers including women employed in textile mills in Rajapalayam in celebration of National Handloom Day, and heard their grievances and demands.

Defence production hits record Rs 1.5 lakh crore, private firms' share up
Synopsis India's defence production has surpassed ₹1.5 lakh crore, marking a significant milestone fueled by increased private sector participation. The defence minister highlighted an 18% growth in FY 2024-25, showcasing the strengthening of India's defence industrial base. Defence exports also saw a surge, reaching ₹23,622 crore, reflecting a 12% increase over the previous year. PTI Indian defence production has crossed the ₹1.5 lakh crore mark, with private companies increasing their share in production and export of military systems, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. Lauding the collective effort that led to an all-time high figure of defence production worth ₹1,50,590 crore, Singh said that the milestone is a clear indicator of India's strengthening defence industrial base. Officials said that in the 2024-25 FY, there has been an 18% growth over the previous fiscal's output of ₹1.27 lakh crore, and a 90% increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was ₹79,071 crore. The numbers have been achieved as the government has gone on overdrive to promote Indian companies to enter the sector and has initiated programs like Emergency Procurement (EPs) that have given orders to a large number of startups and smaller companies as well. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs accounted for around 77% of total production, while the private sector contributed 23%. The share of the private sector has been steadily rising, from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, and is expected to go up exponentially in the coming years as several big projects have been opened up to competitive bidding. Dozens of companies, from backgrounds as diverse as automobile component manufacturing to civil works have entered the defence manufacturing sector as opportunities grow."Both public and private segments of the industry have demonstrated consistent year-on-year growth, attributed to far-reaching policy reforms, enhanced ease of doing business, and a strategic focus on indigenisation over the past decade," officials said. There has been a surge in defence exports as well, with the figure growing to ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, a 12% growth over the previous year.

Ukraine-Russia conflict: Zelenskyy thanks Starmer and partners; sidelines decisions made without Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday and highlighted the need for 'truly lasting peace' and said that he values the determination of the UK and US and all "our partners to end the war. " In a post on X, Zelenskyy said, "I spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. I am grateful for the support. We share the same view on the need for a truly lasting peace for Ukraine and on the danger of Russia's plan to reduce everything to discussing the impossible." He added, "Clear steps are needed, as well as maximum coordination between us and our partners. We value the determination of the United Kingdom, the United States, and all our partners to end the war. We are actively working for constructive diplomacy and to ensure that the decisions can work. We agreed on further contacts." The Ukrainian president had earlier posted a series of messages stressing that any decisions made without Ukraine would be 'decisions against peace' and would not achieve anything. He also referenced US President Donald Trump's planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! Back Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo "President Trump announced preparations for his meeting with Putin in Alaska. Very far away from this war, which is raging on our land, against our people, and which anyway can't be ended without us, without Ukraine," he said. In another post, Zelenskyy insisted Ukraine's territorial integrity was non-negotiable, "The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question already is in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from this--and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier." He also signalled readiness to work with the United States and all allies, saying, "We are ready to work together with President Trump, together with all our partners for real and, most importantly, lasting peace. A peace that will not collapse because of Moscow's desires." At the White House earlier, during the signing of the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace accord, Trump suggested there had been progress in efforts to resolve the Russia–Ukraine conflict. When asked how far peace negotiations had advanced, Trump said, "We are getting very close to a deal. Working with European nations, who are terrific people and leaders, is a pleasure through NATO. I became very friendly with them and agreed to go from 2 per cent to 5 per cent that they have already paid. And we are working together very closely. In all fairness to President Zelensky, he is getting everything he needs, assuming we will get something done. I will be meeting very shortly with President Putin. It would have been sooner, but I guess there are security arrangements that unfortunately people have to make." Trump also suggested any agreement would involve territorial adjustments, "It's very complicated. But we're going to get some [territory] back, and we're going to get some switched. There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we'll be talking about that either later, or tomorrow."

State Bar Council issues notices to 16 lawyers over ‘bench hunting'
Chandigarh: The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana (BCPH) has issued notices to 16 lawyers, including two senior advocates, in connection with allegations of "bench hunting" in a high-profile case involving real estate developer Roop Bansal. The council issued the notice following a suo motu inquiry initiated by the privilege committee after media reports and court observations hinted at attempts to manipulate the bench allocation process of the Punjab and Haryana high court. The privilege committee, chaired by Raj Kumar Chauhan, convened on Aug 7 to examine records in CRM-M-19843-2025 (Roop Bansal vs State of Haryana), along with related high court orders and news reports. The committee observed that the allegations, if proven, amount to a grave attack on the dignity and ethics of the legal profession. "Any attempt to subvert the Temple of Justice, motivated by greed or manipulation, must be addressed with utmost seriousness," the order stated, invoking historical and moral analogies from the Mahabharata and quotes from figures like Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar, Lord Denning, and Justice Brandeis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? The lawyers who have been asked to file a response to the issue are J K Singla, Sidharth Bhardwaj, Aditya Aggarwal, Gagandeep Singh, Anmol Chandan, Baljeet Beniwal, Harsh Sharma, Sauhard Singh, Rupender Singh, Ankit Yadav, Ashim Singla, Aakash Sharma, Bindu, APS Shergil, senior advocate Rakesh Nehra, and senior advocate Puneet Bali. All are alleged to have appeared or acted on behalf of Roop Bansal in the matter. The committee noted that records prima facie suggest advocate J K Singla may have played a "key role" in orchestrating the strategy, but stressed that such actions were likely carried out "in an organised manner" with involvement from other "ingenious minds" yet to be identified. The order also called for responses from prominent senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mukul Rohatgi to ensure a comprehensive adjudication. The lawyers have been asked to appear before the privilege committee on Aug 16 at 3 pm, either in person or through counsel, and to submit written replies. The committee likened the alleged practice of bench hunting, seeking a particular bench perceived to be favourable, to "rotten apples in the basket" and stressed the need to remove them before the entire profession's integrity is compromised. It also appealed for information or complaints from advocates or affected persons, to be sent via the committee's email or official WhatsApp number. "The legal profession is not merely a career — it is a calling that demands unshakable integrity, moral courage, and devotion to the cause of justice," the order concluded, warning that ethical breaches by even a few can corrode public faith in the entire system. Importantly, the matter came into the limelight after a complaint was received by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana high court, and the matter was de-listed from the bench of Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, who reserved its verdict after hearing the matter. The Chief Justice, in its order, hinted at bench hunting by the lawyers in this matter. Prior to referring the matter to Justice Sindhu, several benches recused themselves from hearing. Interestingly, even after taking the matter from Justice Sidhu, several other judges of the HC recused themselves from hearing this case.
