Twins infielder Brooks Lee, right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart to begin season on injured list

Washington Post24-03-2025

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Minnesota Twins infielder Brooks Lee and right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart will begin the season on the injured list.
The moves were announced Sunday by the club.
Lee, the No. 8 overall pick by Minnesota in the 2022 draft out of Cal Poly, had been dealing with lower back tightness during spring training and was sidelined for the first two months of the 2024 season with a herniated disk in his back.
Once promoted from Triple-A last summer, the rookie batted .221 with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 50 games for the Twins.
Stewart sustained a left hamstring injury but also underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder last August.
The Twins already were without third baseman Royce Lewis for opening day because of a strained left hamstring.
Minnesota won the AL Central in 2023 then finished in fourth last season.

Blockbuster Mock NBA Trade Pairs Anthony Edwards on Timberwolves With $197 Million All-Star

Blockbuster Mock NBA Trade Pairs Anthony Edwards on Timberwolves With $197 Million All-Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached the conference finals two years in a row. That's a big accomplishment for a franchise with zero championships. Advertisement The Timberwolves lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 conference finals in five games and fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in this year's conference finals in five games. Many pundits believe Minnesota needs another explosive playmaker and scorer next to All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards for the team to reach the NBA Finals. With that said, Eddie Bitar of Fadeaway World proposed that the Timberwolves make a blockbuster trade with the Memphis Grizzlies this offseason. This NBA trade idea sends Ja Morant from Memphis to Minnesota. Petre Thomas-Imagn Images Bitar proposed that the Timberwolves trade Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid and two 2025 first-round picks to the Grizzlies for Ja Morant and John Konchar this offseason. Advertisement "Edwards has already shown he can thrive on-ball and off, and Morant, for all his chaos, is a relentless rim attacker who collapses defenses like few others," Bitar wrote. "Together, they'd form a devastating blend of power, speed, and creativity. Defenders would be left guessing, help schemes would be shredded, and the pace? Good luck keeping up." A two-time All-Star, Morant appeared in 50 games for the Grizzlies this season. He averaged 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.3 assists while shooting 45.4% from the field, 30.9% from beyond the arc and 82.4% from the foul line. Morant was the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies have won just one postseason series since drafting Morant out of Murray State. The 25-year-old Morant has career averages of 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.4 assists. He signed a five-year, $197 million extension with Memphis in 2022. Advertisement Morant will make $39.4 million next season and doesn't have a no-trade clause in his contract. Simone Biles apologizes to Riley Gaines, argues for 'competitive equity and inclusivity' in women's sports

In a post Tuesday, Biles apologized for not showing "empathy and respect" in a tweet where she ripped Gaines for the former swimmer's stance on transgender athletes. In her post, Biles said she believed "competitive equity and inclusivity" are essential in sport. She said she did not want to advocate for policies that "compromise fairness in women's sports." Biles added that she took issue with Gaines singling out a child in her post. Advertisement Biles ended her post by saying: "Individual athletes — especially kids — should never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over. I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful." Biles and Gaines engaged in a verbal back-and-forth on X on Friday after Gaines attacked Minnesota's high school interscholastic governing body for allowing a transgender girl to compete in the girl's state softball tournament. Champlin Park, with the transgender girl on the mound, won the state 4A championship 6-0. Biles responded to that tweet, calling Gaines a "sore loser" and a "bully." Gaines — a former swimmer at the University of Kentucky — became a public figure in 2022, when she argued against the inclusion of transgender women participating in women's sports after she tied for fifth with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas at a meet. Gaines has continued to lobby for that cause, and appeared in a video on the United States Department of Health and Human Services website in February which argued against allowing transgender women to participate in women's sports. Advertisement Gaines responded to Biles' post Friday, calling it "disappointing." Over the weekend, Gaines tweeted or shared at least 15 tweets mentioning Biles. Shortly after Biles' post, Gaines responded to Biles' post. "I accept Simone's apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She's still the greatest female gymnast of all time. "A couple of things. Sports ARE inclusive by nature. Anyone can and everyone SHOULD play sports. Competition, on the other hand and by definition, is exclusive. So the idea of "competitive equity" is nonsensical. "Secondly, the boys are publicly humiliating the girls. To suggest that women and girls must be silent or ignore a boy who is PUBLICLY hurting or humiliating them is wrong. You can't have any empathy and compassion for the girls if you're ignoring when young men are harming or abusing them. I am not ashamed to be a voice for the voiceless. "Lastly, I agree with you that the blame is on the lawmakers and leaders at the top. Precisely why I'm suing the NCAA and support candidates who vow to stand with women. That's why I joined @realDonaldTrump at the signing of his Executive Order. I didn't see you there or championing this effort with your platform. "Women's sports can't be used as an excuse for girl's to center the feelings and validation of men and boys.

Royals place Michael Massey on injured list, recall Tyler Tolbert before series-opener vs Yankees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals placed second baseman Michael Massey on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle and recalled utility man Tyler Tolbert from Triple-A Omaha before starting a three-game series against the Yankees on Tuesday night. Massey had served as the designated hitter on Saturday against the White Sox but did not finish the game, and he was out of the lineup for the series finale. He is hitting just .202 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 56 games this season. 'The same ankle injury that he's been dealing with since the last homestand. It's just not getting any better, or it's not improving enough to go out there and play at a high level,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'He got an MRI to show that things weren't healing as well as we would like. So, we needed to make a move to get him some rest.' ___
