What's next for Oregon Football at QB position after 5-star Ryder Lyons' announcement?

USA Today6 hours ago

On Tuesday morning, the Oregon Ducks saw the second 5-star quarterback in the 2026 class list them as a finalist in their recruitment, and then chose another school in the end. Earlier this spring, it was 5-star Jared Curtis who chose the Georgia Bulldogs over the Ducks, while Tuesday saw 5-star Ryder Lyons choose the BYU Cougars over Oregon.
While unfortunate and somewhat frustrating for fans, it's admittedly not the end of the world. Lyons may be in the 2026 class, but because of a post-high school LDS mission, he won't be enrolling until 2027.
Still, losing Lyons means that the Ducks need to land another passer in the 2026 class to keep their QB room full and stocked with talent. There are a couple of names on the board, and a broader conversation to be had about what the future of recruiting for the position looks like.
Let's start with some names to know in the immediate future.
4-star QB Bryson Beaver
Oregon was in early on former Boise State Broncos commit Bryson Beaver, who opened up his recruitment a couple of weeks ago after receiving an Oregon offer, and has since seen his recruitment blow up. In that time, Beaver has received multiple offers from SEC schools like Ole Miss, LSU, and Auburn, and has been named one of the top players at the Elite 11 Finals.
While Oregon may have been in on him early, it's looking like landing him may be more difficult than originally anticipated. The Ducks are still the leader in the clubhouse to get Beaver at the moment, but his recruitment could go on a couple more months and into the season, so it's one to keep tabs on.
4-star Matt Ponatoski
Another name to know is Matt Ponatoski, a 4-star recruit out of Ohio who is just as good, if not better, at baseball than he is football.
Earlier this year, Ponatoski accomplished a rare feat, winning the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year for both football and baseball, which is something that has been done in two sports by only three players in the last 40 years: Ponatoski, Randy Moss, and Matt Bauer.
While there is an expectation that Ponatoski will announce his commitment between Oregon and the Kentucky Wildcats later this week, questions remain about his future. As such a highly-touted baseball prospect, a future exists where he gets drafted highly in the MLB draft this year, and doesn't end up playing any college football, choosing to go straight to the minor leagues out of high school.
Because of this he may be viewed as a riskier QB prospect than Beaver for the Ducks' case.
The Future of Oregon QBs
While it is currently up in the air who Oregon is going to get at QB in this class, there should be some confidence that Dan Lanning and Will Stein will secure somebody before all is said and done. Where they fit into the future plans is a different question.
Either Dante Moore or Austin Novosad will be the starting QB in 2025, and it's fair to assume that the QB1 this season will stay on as the QB1 in 2026 as well. Then in 2027, the job is open once again for anyone to grab.
So who will that be? Your answer depends entirely on your confidence level in the guys currently in the room. It could be Luke Moga or Akili Smith Jr., both of whom came to Oregon as solid recruits with a plan to develop in the system. It could be Beaver, Ponatoski, or an unnamed QB in the 2026 class who sits for a year in 2026 and then beats at the others for the starting job in 2027.
It also could be that Oregon chooses to go back into the transfer portal for a year and get their passer that way, hoping that a QB they get in the 2027 class can develop behind them and take over down the road.
No matter what happens, it's become entirely clear that the Ducks have a lot of talented individuals in the QB room, and a great track record of developing those players into stars. Whoever ends up stepping in as the QB1 in 2025, 2026, 2027, and beyond should garner the utmost confidence from the fanbase as Lanning and Stein build this program out into the future.

2025 College Football Prediction, Best Bet: Back Oregon to Eclipse Win Total

With college football kicking off in just two months, it's time to assess how successful — or how unsuccessful — teams will be this upcoming season. There is one team whose win total stood out to me in particular: the Oregon Ducks. And based on what we know about this team from last year and its offseason moves, I'm ready to throw down some cash on these Ducks. Let's take a look at what I think Oregon's regular-season win total will be. Oregon Ducks Over/Under 11 wins Dan Lanning returns to Eugene for his fourth season as head coach of the Oregon Ducks after three successful years. At 38 years old, this first-time head coach has an overall record of 35-6: 2022: 10-3, 2023: 12-2 and 2024: 13-1. For the sake of a regular-season win total, his record in just 12 regular-season games is 32-4, with three losses coming from his first season. One characteristic of Lanning's teams is their play against opponents they should beat. Aside from a loss to Oregon State at the end of the 2022 season, the Ducks have not lost a regular-season game they shouldn't have. Their three other regular-season losses are to Georgia and twice to Washington. However, there have been close games. A late comeback against Washington State in 2022, a late pick-six to seal the game at Texas Tech in 2023 and a three-point win against Boise State and Wisconsin were Oregon's closest wins last season. Otherwise, it's a bunch of lopsided scores where Oregon was in no danger of losing. This mindset of respecting every opponent is welcome when you're wagering Over 10.5 wins on a team. They can not be upset. There's no margin for error. The Oregon schedule allows for the Ducks to win most of their games. The non-conference slate includes three home games against Montana State, Oklahoma State and Oregon State. Oregon will be multiple-touchdown favorites against all three. While Montana State did play for the FCS championship, I expect the Ducks to be on high alert after their previous season opener against Idaho. Oklahoma State went 0-9 in the Big 12 last season, and the Beavers just don't have the horses to compete. In conference play, Oregon hosts Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and USC. Oregon rarely loses at home, and none of these teams pose a threat right now. Indiana could be feisty with Mendoza and its coaching staff, while USC could be peaking near the end of the season if things break right. Still, these games are at home, where the Ducks usually win. Oregon will face conference road games at Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, Iowa and Washington. The Penn State game will be difficult, and Oregon may lose that game. In the other four games, Oregon will be a touchdown favorite or more, but playing at Washington to end the season is a rivalry game — one I'm hesitant to mark as a win ahead of time. If the Ducks are 10-1 and you're afraid to lose the Over wager, then take Washington moneyline. The Ducks' winning ways over the last three seasons have included one of the best rosters in the country. They have fielded two straight Heisman finalists and over a dozen players drafted into the NFL. The last draft included their starting quarterback, running back, tight end, best receiver, starting defensive tackles and more. Oregon will be replacing a lot of talent and will need to mesh quickly for success. Oregon's quarterback will be Dante Moore, a former five-star recruit who transferred from UCLA last winter. He redshirted last season and has a gifted arm. There were also transfer portal additions at running back, left tackle and left guard. Both of the offensive linemen could see their names called in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Ducks defense saw major additions in the defensive back end as well. Oregon has stockpiled talent on the defensive line and at linebacker, and will need those guys to step up this season. I have no doubt the coaching staff — with years of results to back it up — will get these guys playing well early in the season. For all these reasons, I'm taking Oregon to win 11 games or more. The Penn State game will be tough, and I'm not sure Oregon will win. The margin of error is slim if the Ducks lose, but they have shown no history of losing games that they shouldn't. It's a talented roster with a coaching staff who's getting better each season. PICK: Oregon Ducks Over 11 wins Geoff Schwartz is an NFL analyst for FOX Sports. 5-Star QB Ryder Lyons Reveals Why He Will Not Play College Football Next Season

5-Star QB Ryder Lyons Reveals Why He Will Not Play College Football Next Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the average five-star quarterback who will be entering his first year at a big-time college football program, the concerns might be learning a playbook, meeting dozens of new teammates and adjusting to life on campus. Advertisement For Ryder Lyons, BYU's five-star commitment from the 2026 class, he has something very different in mind. In what amounts to a redshirt year, Lyons made an appearance on Tuesday at the "Pat McAfee Show" to announce he would not be playing football next season and instead will be serving an "LDS mission." The 6-foot-2.5, 220-pound signal-caller further explained that he isn't sure what his mission will be or where he might go; however, after submitting his mission paperwork to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), he will learn about his mission a few weeks later. BYU, or Brigham Young University, is, of course, known for having deep Mormon roots. The school was founded in 1875 by religious leader Brigham Young, who was the second president of the LDS Church after the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. Advertisement Many big-time college football and NFL players have Mormon ties, like former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young, who is also related to Brigham Young. Some other examples include New Orleans Saints tight end Taysom Hill, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner, former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Austin Collie and countless others. BYU quarterback commit Ryder Lyons© JOE LUMAYA/SPECIAL TO THE STAR / USA TODAY NETWORK In addition to speaking of his mission, Lyons committed to the Cougars on Tuesday. He chose BYU over Oregon, Alabama, Arizona and many of the biggest college football programs. On3 rates him as the No. 17 player in the country, the No. 5 quarterback and the third-best player in California. Last season, Lyons passed for 3,011 yards, 46 touchdowns and six interceptions. He added 585 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Advertisement Athlon Sports slotted BYU at No. 35 in a recent rankings of the top 136 teams. Oregon Football fans react to EA Sports CFB 26's strange choices for Ducks

The EA Sports College Football 26 video game is set to drop in a matter of weeks, so new details and trailers have been pouring out over the last months as fans prepare to dive back into the beloved gaming franchise and get onto the digital gridiron. On Tuesday, CFB26 released a deep dive into the revamped Dynast Mode of the game, showing all of the changes in this year's version of the game, from coaching and player archetypes to new recruiting tools. While there were a lot of encouraging takeaways for gamers, Oregon Duck fans seemed to focus on a couple of, let's say, "interesting" choices that the game made in their release. The first, and most minor detail, was the appearance of Dan Lanning in the video game. With over 300 college coaches being introduced, it's fun to see your favorite head man in the game, but some of them may not look quite accurate in the digital world. More importantly, though, the game highlighted a particular Oregon player as they went through different archetypes. The only problem, though, was that the player — LB linebacker Harrison Taggart — is no longer on Oregon's roster, and hasn't been in a few years. Taggart enrolled at Oregon in 2022, but transferred to the BYU Cougars in 2023, and has since again transferred to the California Golden Bears earlier this year in 2025. Here's a look at how Duck fans reacted to the two details from the game trailer release: The Dynasty Mode Deep Dive What does EA Sports Know? What does @EASPORTSCollege know that we don't?? 👀😂 Is This Tampering? CFB 26 tampering for Oregon with Harrison Taggart is definitely not something I had on my 2026 bingo card That's Dan Lanning? That is not Dan Lanning 😭 Yea, That's Not Dan Lanning Who the hell is this?
