
Upland Kozhikode abuzz with pre-events of Malabar River Festival
The hilly hamlet of Kodenchery often wakes up to watch kayakers, both amateur and professional kayakers, rowing downstream the Chalippuzha, practising for the International Kayaking Competition to be held as part of the festival from July 24 to 27. River rafting is also being held in full swing here. While international kayakers are expected to arrive within a few days, several national-level kayakers, including national champion Amit Thapa, have already arrived at Kodenchery for practice sessions and training budding kayakers.
The Malabar River Festival begins at Meenthullippara in Chakkittapara panchayat on July 24 where freestyle demonstrations will be held. However, the inauguration will be held at Pulikkayam at Kodencheri on July 25, where extreme slalom competitions in all categories are to be held. The downriver race and super finals will be held at Pulloorampara on July 27.
The pre-events spread across several upland villages in the district have succeeded in creating enthusiasm in the high range. There are events such as ankling, rain walk, farm tour, painting, mud football, off-road fun drive, badminton tournament, tug-of-war, tourism seminar, cycling and bullock race in Kodiyathur, Thiruvambady, Kodencheri, Koodaranhi, Puthuppadi and Perumanna grama panchayats besides Mukkam Municipality that receive good patronage from the local community.
The Malabar River Festival is jointly organised by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) with the technical support of the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA).

Mohamed Riyas has said his remarkable achievement at the ongoing championships in the picturesque coastal town of Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, underscores the rapid advancement of Kerala on the global surfing map, along with inspiring budding surfers to pursue their dreams in the exhilarating world of surfing. The surfing sensation from Kovalam in Kerala secured his spot in the finals after an impressive performance in the semifinal heat, finishing with a score of 11.43 points, which earned him second place. His accomplishment not only celebrates individual talent but also validates Kerala's dedicated efforts to position itself as a prominent hub for adventure sports, Mr. Riyas said. He dominated his heat with a remarkable score of 14.84 points, surpassing top competitors from across Asia, including the Philippines' Neil Sanchez, who finished with 12.80 points. The journey of the young man, who started surfing the waves of Kovalam and established himself among the top surfers in Asia, is a hope for the adventure sport buffs from the State. The State has recently hosted events like the International Surfing Championship, in Varkala, significantly attracting energetic youth to explore this exhilarating discipline and drawing surfing enthusiasts to Kerala coasts from across the globe. 'Kerala is at the forefront of major events in adventure sports,' Mr. Riyas said, highlighting major events listed on the God's Own Country's tourism calendar. All of these events attract global champions, helping Kerala to emerge as a model for adventure sports in India. They include the Malabar River Festival, which is one of Asia's largest white-water kayaking tournaments; the National Surfing Championship in Varkala; the Paragliding Festival in Vagamon; and the Mountain Terrain Bike Tournament in Mananthavady.

New Zealand kayakers steal the show at 11th edition of Malabar River Festival finale
Two New Zealanders grabbed the titles of 'Rapid Raja' and 'Rapid Rani' at the 11th edition of the Malabar River Festival, which concluded at Elanthukkadavu near Pulloorampara on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Ryan O'Conner and Rata Lowell-Smith recorded the best times in their respective categories in the Downriver Race, the final event of the festival, which was shifted to Pulikkayam due to high water levels in the Iruvazhinjipuzha at Pulloorampara, where it was originally scheduled to be held. Kilian Ivelic of Chile and Arjun Singh Rawat of Uttarakhand secured the second and third positions in the men's category, while Millie Chamberlain and Dayla Ward, both from New Zealand, finished second and third in the women's category. The top three finishers in both categories were awarded prize money of ₹1.2 lakh, ₹60,000, and ₹30,000, respectively. Among the Indian kayakers, Arjun Singh Rawat secured the top position, followed by Amar Singh Ankit and Kuldeep Singh in second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, Akshay Ashok, Adam Mathew Sibi, Nikhil Das, Sudhakar Jena, Ryan Varghese, Dona Marcella, and E. Swaliha were selected as the best kayakers from Kerala and awarded ₹10,000 each. Anak, Adam Mathew Sibi, and Karishma Diwan received special awards for being the best kayakers in the under-18 category. Minister for Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas gave away the prizes to the winners at the valedictory event held at Elanthukkadavu on Sunday evening. 'Malabar River Festival is garnering international attention and is being considered one of the five biggest kayaking festivals in the world,' he said, adding that the tourism sector in Kerala is evolving with the times and adopting newer trends that the rest of the world could follow. Linto Joseph, MLA, presided over the valedictory function, while Tourism Director Shikha Surendran, Joint Director D. Gireesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) Binu Kuriakose, representatives of the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA), and presidents of various upland grama panchayats in Kozhikode were present. The festival was organised by the KATPS and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council, under the aegis of the Department of Tourism and with technical support from the IKCA.

New Zealand, Chile kayakers bag top honours on second day of Malabar River Festival
Dayla Ward of New Zealand and Kilian Ivelic of Chile bagged the first prize in the Professional Extreme Slalom competitions in the women's and men's categories, respectively, on the second day of the 11th edition of the Malabar River Festival (MRF), held at Pulikkayam, Kodencheri in Kozhikode on Saturday (July 26). In the men's category, Ryan O'Conner from New Zealand secured the second prize, while Joseph Todd of the USA took third place. In the women's category, Daria Kuziahcheva from Russia and Rata Lowell-Smith from New Zealand finished second and third, respectively. The festival will conclude at Pulloorampara on Sunday (July 27) with the Down River Race / Super Finals, through which the Rapid Rani and Rapid Raja titles will be awarded. The top 16 rank holders in the men's category and the top eight rank holders in the women's category from Saturday's Professional Extreme Slalom competitions will compete in the final race. Minister for Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas will inaugurate the valedictory function. Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Thiruvambady MLA Linto Joseph, district panchayat president Sheeja Shashi, District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, and presidents of various upland grama panchayats are expected to attend the event.
