‘Unmatched' Blondie drummer Clem Burke dies aged 70 after cancer diagnosis

Independent07-04-2025

Blondie drummer Clem Burke has died aged 70 after a cancer diagnosis, the band has said.
Born in New Jersey, US, Burke featured on all of the Debbie Harry-fronted band's studio albums, from their self-titled debut, through their 1978 classic Parallel Lines, to 2017's Pollinator, after joining the band a year after their formation in 1975.
In a statement on Blondie's Instagram, Harry and the band's guitarist Chris Stein said: 'It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer.
'Clem was not just a drummer, he was the heartbeat of Blondie. His talent, energy, and passion for music were unmatched, and his contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable.
'Beyond his musicianship, Clem was a source of inspiration both on and off the stage. His vibrant spirit, infectious enthusiasm and rock solid work ethic touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
'Clem's influence extended far beyond Blondie, a self proclaimed 'rock and roll survivalist', he played and collaborated with numerous iconic artists.'
Burke played on Iggy Pop's 1982 album Zombie Birdhouse, and also performed with Bob Dylan, The Ramones, The Who guitarist Pete Townshend, and Joan Jett.
The statement continued: 'His influence and contributions have spanned decades and genres, leaving an indelible mark on every project he was a part of.
'We extend our deepest condolences to Clem's family, friends, and fans around the world. His legacy will live on through the tremendous amount of music he created and the countless lives he touched.
'As we navigate this profound loss, we ask for privacy during this difficult time. Godspeed, Dr Burke.'
Burke made his final live appearance with Blondie last year, and even performed with tribute act Bootleg Blondie in 2019.
The drummer performed on classic tracks such as Call Me, Heart Of Glass and One Way Or Another, scoring six UK number one singles and two UK number one albums.
Among those paying tribute was Kinks guitarist Dave Davies, who said in a post on X: 'I feel saddened that Clem Burke was taken from us so soon.
'May he rest in peace, spectacular drumming, we were friends.'
The band began their career performing at New York's CBGB and Max's Kansas City clubs, which witnessed the birth of a number of pioneering punk bands, including the Patti Smith Group, Television, The Ramones and Talking Heads.
During their early days Burke was credited with keeping the band together after original bassist Fred Smith left to join Television, recruiting his friend Gary Valentine to take over.
He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with his fellow bandmates in 2006.

The View sparks confusion over ZERO mention of Donald Trump and Elon Musk fallout: 'Did they get censored?'

The View left many disappointed and confused on Friday after the ABC daytime show failed to mention Donald Trump and Elon Musk 's sensational fallout. The President and the Tesla billionaire's alliance erupted on Thursday over their differences on Trump's 'big beautiful bill.' Throughout the afternoon of June 5, the pair engaged in a very dramatic public showdown with Musk calling for Trump to be impeached after linking him to Jeffrey Epstein, and Trump threatening to deport the Space X boss. Many fans of The View had tuned in to watch the June 6 episode in anticipation of outspoken hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farah Griffin unpacking the headline-making bust-up. However, they were left disappointed to when there was zero mention of the feud. understands the lack of reference to Trump and Musk's spat is because Friday's episode of The View was actually taped on Thursday, June 5. Nevertheless, many confused fans took to social media to voice their upset over the episode, with some going as far as saying the show's bosses had 'missed the mark.' Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: 'Cannot believe you're not talking about what everyone else is talking about today!' 'This must be a taped show,' added another. 'I'm so disappointed. I was looking forward to it.' 'Is this taped!? Or did they get censored?!' a third asked. 'I want "The View" on the girl fight yesterday!' 'Where are the current events?' another quizzed. 'I am so disappointed. Is the show pretaped last year? Love y'all, but you missed the mark. Not a word about the break up of the bromance.' A fifth continued: 'Hmmmm. Prerecorded? Nothing on the elephant in the room? The Feud?' 'No talk about the biggest and best news in ages, very disappointing!' blasted another. A seventh huffed: 'How disappointing no Musk drama mentioned. That sucks and I switched channels.' Instead, the hosts responded to Malia Obama dropping her last name as she starts a new career in filmmaking. Trump last night appeared to shrug off the stunning public feud in an interview with Politico. 'Oh it's okay,' he said during a phone call, before touting his recent polling: 'It's going very well, never done better. 'The numbers are through the roof, the highest polls I've ever had and I have to go.' Trump had earlier threatened to terminate Musk's lucrative federal contracts with allies suggesting he and his companies be stripped of security clearances.

Nadiya Hussain reveals the BBC has AXED her cooking show after a decade on screens - and swipes that TV industry 'doesn't always support Muslim women like me'

Nadiya Hussain has revealed that the BBC has cancelled her cooking show after ten years on our screens in a 'really difficult' blow. The 40 year old, who won the sixth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2015, opened up about the 'changes in her career' in a recent Instagram post. After winning the cooking programme, Nadiya bagged herself a number of television shows with the Beeb, including Nadiya's Asian Odyssey, Nadiya's Cook Once Eat Twice and Nadiya's Time to Eat. The series had different iterations which included others such as Nadiya's British Good Adventure and Nadiya's Fast Flavours. Hussain told her 950k followers: 'One huge change is that there will be no cookery show. 'There will be no more cookery show. The BBC have decided that they didn't want to commission the show. 'And for me, that was a huge turning point for me because it's something I've done for the past 10 years. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'It was huge, I was already on this steady trajectory of change and I was thinking about where I wanted my career to go. 'And when the BBC decided they didn't want to commission the show anymore, it really did kind of solidify everything for me, and it made me dig my heels in and think 'OK, I know where I want to be".' Speaking about her experience in the industry, she added: 'And actually, it's really difficult as a Muslim woman. I work in an industry tat doesn't always support people like me or recognise my talent or my full potential. 'And as a lot gaslighting and making you feel like what's actually happening isn't happening. 'So for me it's been a huge, huge, huge change for me. But it's one that I am really excited about. 'One that I want to move in a positive direction and ultimately I want to work with people who believe in voices of people like me.' She captioned the post: 'Just a hello from me! 'Thank you to everyone for being on this journey with me, and I hope you can continue to stay on this journey with me. 'It wouldn't be what ibe is if it were not for you guys. #newbeginnings #allmylove #changes.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'After several wonderful series we have made the difficult decision not to commission another cookery show with Nadiya Hussain at the moment.' Nadiya has had a very successful career since winning GBBO 10 years ago. Shortly after the show, she landed The Chronicles of Nadiya on BBC One. The same year she was a judge on Junior Bake Off. The following year she presented an eight-part series called Nadiya's British Food Adventure. As well as her cooking series on the BBC, she's appeared on The One Show as a reporter various times, as well as ITV's Loose Women. Nadiya also has written a number of cooking books over the years. Some include Nadiya's Kitchen, Nadiya's Every Day Baking and Cook Once, Eat Twice. She's also written novels such as The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters, Spreading my Wings and Today I'm Strong.

EXCLUSIVE Watch Diane Morgan take BRUTAL swipe at Who Do You Think You Are producers in BBC first

Diane Morgan takes a catty swipe at the Who Do You Think You Are producers in the next episode of the BBC show. Tuesday's instalment of the programme will see the comedian and actress, 49, explore her father's side of the family after he passed away six years ago. In an exclusive first look obtained by MailOnline, Diane certainly shows off her funny side as she chats to the camera about taking part in the programme, and brings up some of her work that has poked fun at the series. Sitting on a brown leather sofa, she cheekily says: 'This is what I can't understand about any of those shows, like this one, where people go on a journey, you know, you'd think people would stop using those tropes. 'Even the tiny little things like walking past the camera...' A number of shots of her doing exactly that then play out. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She continues: 'I wonder how much wondering aimlessly I'll be doing in this...' Back at the sofa, Diane says: 'So I wrote this comedy called Mandy, about this woman who can't hold a job down, in one episode she goes on Who Are You, Do You Think?... 'Loosely based on Who Do You Think You Are.' As the actress bursts into laughter, a scene from the programme appears, Diane's character Mandy can be seen in a jacuzzi Deborah Meaden. She continues to say: 'But I never thought in a million years, I thought you'd ask me to be on it.' The clip ends with the star taking her pooch for a walk. Diane tells her dog: 'Come on Bob. Bob, we're going to go to the park! You love the park!' As Bob refuses to move, Diane says: 'I knew he'd steal this. Come on Bob! 'Bob. Come on Bob.' She later picks him up and confesses: 'He's just very headstrong...' Back in March the Beeb confirmed the return of Who Do You Think You Are? with a Strictly star, soap legend and Hollywood icon in the new celeb-filled series. The genealogy show, which follows famous faces as they find out about their family tree, hit our screens on the Beeb in 2004 and has had 177 episodes over 20 seasons. The likes of Andrew Garfield, Diane Morgan, Mushal Husian, Ross Kemp, Aisling Bea, Will Young, Fred Siriex and Layton Williams explore their family history. Last week singer Will made a shocking discovery that he's related to King Edward I. Will learnt that Edward I is his 20 times great grandfather, with the monarch ruling from 1272 to 1307. After discovering the royal link, Will says: 'No? Edward the First! No? You are joking? You have made it up. That's unbelievable. This is just amazing. 'I cannot believe it. It is wonderful. Being related to a king, will it change my behaviour? I mean the short answer is Yes. 'What you are beholding is essentially a future despot. You see Mr Nice Guy. Now get ready for Mr Nasty.'
