EU Official Pledges Efforts to Strengthen Unique Ties with Morocco

Morocco World25-06-2025
Rabat – Dubravka Šuica, Commissioner for the Mediterranean and Demography, renewed the importance of EU-Morocco cooperation, noting that both sides share a common goal.
'We share a unique relationship and a common goal to deepen our partnership,' she wrote on X on Tuesday, signaling an upcoming visit to Morocco.
The European official made her remarks after a phone call with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, describing Morocco as a key and reliable partner for the EU.
The European Union has been viewing the North African country as a strategic partner across different sectors. Officials from the EU and the bloc's member states, particularly Spain and France, have been consistently stressing the importance of partnership with Rabat in key areas such as migration management, trade, and regional security.
Morocco is the EU's 18 biggest partner.
In 2024, total trade in goods between the two parties reached over €60.6 billion, with EU imports from Morocco amounting to €25.3 billion.
The imports were led by transport equipment, machinery, and appliances, along with vegetable products and textiles.
EU's exports to Morocco, meanwhile, amounted to €35.3 billion, led by machinery and appliances.
The Morocco-EU ties faced recent challenges, notably following a controversial ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which annulled the fisheries and agriculture agreement between the two parties.
In October last year, the court ruled that the European Commission 'violated the right of self-determination of Western Sahara 's population' by concluding trade agreements with Morocco that included products from 'the disputed territory.'
Morocco responded to the court's ruling, saying that it contained legal errors and suspicious mistakes. The ministry further argued that this indicates a 'complete misunderstanding of the realities of the case, if not a blatant political bias.'
Brussels also renewed its commitment to its partnership with Morocco, adding that it seeks to uphold its long-standing, strategic, and mutually beneficial relationship with Rabat.
'The EU reiterates the high value it attaches to its strategic partnership with Morocco, which is long-standing, wide-ranging, and deep,' the statement said.
In response to European officials' remarks on the importance of Morocco as a strategic ally, Bourita previously called on the EU to take action and not just words, to safeguard the partnership with Rabat.
'Morocco is waiting for the European Union to clarify how it intends to address the provocations and legal and economic pressures that Morocco is currently facing,' Bourita said in November last year.
The country is expecting the EU to propose 'meaningful suggestions and solutions that reflect its commitment to this partnership,' he added. Tags: EU and MoroccoMorocco and EU

Refusal Rate at 20% as Moroccans Received 606,000 Schengen Visas in 2024

Marrakech – Morocco received more than 606,000 Schengen visas from European Union countries in 2024, with a refusal rate of approximately 20%, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita. France alone issued about 284,000 visas to Moroccan citizens, representing nearly 46% of the total visas granted and marking a 17% increase compared to the previous year. 'The countries of the European Union issued more than 606,000 visas to Moroccans last year, while the refusal rate did not exceed 20% of submitted applications, which is an average rate compared to other countries,' Bourita stated in a written response to a parliamentary question. The top Moroccan diplomat noted that relations with Europe have shown notable improvement, as evidenced by the visa issuance figures. This improvement reflects 'a shared political will between both parties to overcome the problems and tensions that marked their relations in this field during the previous period,' Bourita explained. Morocco now ranks fourth globally for Schengen visa applications in 2024, following China, India, and Turkey, according to data released by SchengenVisaInfo in May. Moroccans have surpassed Russians, who were once the largest group of Schengen visa applicants. With 282,153 applications submitted to France in 2024, Moroccans constitute the second-largest group of applicants for French visas, after Algerians. France remains the top destination for Schengen visa seekers worldwide, receiving over a quarter of all applications. Visa policy is a sovereign decision Bourita said that visa policies represent a sovereign right of each state. 'Morocco's choice to impose or exempt entry visas to its territory remains a sovereign decision that does not respond to moods or circumstantial reactions,' he said. The minister stated that Morocco's approach is based on 'three objective considerations: reciprocity, political and economic imperatives, as well as the context of bilateral relations with each country.' 'Moroccan practice in this area is based on a comprehensive strategy that takes into account the balance of interests, distinguishing between countries based on the nature of cooperation, shared history, and signed agreements,' Bourita added. He also remarked that 'the adoption of modern electronic visa systems reflects this same approach aimed at strengthening the Kingdom's openness through digitizing its services, without giving up national sovereignty.' According to the minister, the Moroccan passport has shown continuous improvement in international rankings, now figuring among the 70 most powerful passports worldwide. Indeed, Morocco's passport has climbed to 67th place globally in the latest Henley Passport Index, marking its best performance in a decade. The new ranking represents a four-position jump from last year's 71st place, allowing Moroccan citizens visa-free access to 73 destinations worldwide. This achievement is Morocco's strongest showing since 2006, when the passport ranked 66th globally. Morocco now ranks first among all North African countries in passport mobility. A study from SchengenVisaInfo compiled in August 2024 identified Switzerland as the Schengen country with the highest approval rate for Moroccan applicants at 83.9%, followed by Poland (83.1%), France (81.3%), Portugal (80.05%), and Czechia (75.60%). Visa system dysfunctions must be corrected Bourita also addressed the issue of visa application processing, stating that his ministry 'firmly calls on foreign embassies and consulates in Morocco to process visa applications within reasonable timeframes, with constant respect for Moroccan citizens and their dignity, particularly for urgent humanitarian requests such as those related to medical care or studies.' He mentioned that during bilateral meetings with representatives of diplomatic missions and consular centers accredited in Morocco, the ministry 'consistently raises the issue of visa systems, their dysfunctions, and urges corrections to avoid exploitation by some illegal intermediaries or brokers.' Data shows that 11,716,723 Schengen visa applications were submitted to EU countries in 2024, representing a 13.5% increase compared to the previous year. Despite this growth, numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels of nearly 17 million in 2019. Overall, the Schengen visa rejection rate decreased to 14.8% in 2024, down from 16% in 2023 and the all-time high of 17.9% in 2022. Despite the positive trends, challenges remain, including the black market for visa appointments, which has seen intermediaries exploiting online systems and reselling appointments for up to MAD 10,000 (approximately $1000). European Leaders Alarmed as Trump Says ‘Ceasefire Not Needed' for Peace in Ukraine

Casablanca – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington on Monday for high-stakes talks with President Donald Trump, joined by a coalition of European leaders determined to preserve trans-Atlantic unity amid intensifying tensions over the war in Ukraine. On the eve of the meeting, Trump signaled that Ukraine must accept some of Russia's demands in order to end the conflict, including formally ceding Crimea to Moscow and ruling out NATO membership. The remarks added to the fueling the concerns in Europe that Washington could be aligning more closely with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, during one of the meetings, Trump said the United States and its European allies were committed to providing Ukraine with robust protection against Russian aggression. 'When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help,' Trump told reporters. Zelensky welcomed the reassurances as 'a major step forward,' revealing that Kyiv has offered to purchase some $90 billion worth of American weapons. Yet, Trump's statements at the high-profile meeting were still full of mixed messages. When asked whether he would pressure Moscow into halting the fighting, Trump shockingly suggested that negotiations could continue even as battles rage. 'I don't think you need a ceasefire,' Trump boldly said. 'I know that it might be good to have, but I can also understand strategically why… one country or the other wouldn't want it,' the US president said in a vague diplomatic tone referring to Russia's demands. 'You have a ceasefire and they rebuild… and you know, maybe they don't want that.' The president added that he would have a phone call with Putin after the meetings in which they 'may or may not have a trilat (trilateral agreement). If we don't have a trilat, the fighting continues.' Growing sense of panic from European allies The presence of several European heads of state in Washington further demonstrated the unease across the Atlantic. European officials wanted to ensure that Zelensky would not be pressured into a deal that could permanently weaken Ukraine's sovereignty and undermine NATO's credibility. A senior European diplomat described a sense of panic among European allies after Trump abruptly shifted from demanding a ceasefire before negotiations to pushing for immediate territorial concessions. Following his bilateral with Zelensky, Trump convened European leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who stressed the need for a 'just and lasting peace' and the return of Ukrainian children deported to Russia. Macron called for 'boots on the ground' to guarantee security, while Starmer framed the talks as vital to Europe's own safety. 'With Trump abandoning the ceasefire requirement, but offering no clear deterrents against Russia, we are at a dangerous moment for the alliance,' said retired US Admiral James Stavridis, former NATO supreme commander. European Council President Antonio Costa announced that EU leaders will hold a video call Tuesday afternoon to review the White House talks. The discussions are expected to shape Europe's strategy ahead of a possible Putin-Zelensky summit later this year. Morocco to Send Additional Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

Rabat — Amid the ongoing Israeli-made famine in Gaza and the staggering number of starvation-related deaths, King Mohammed VI has ordered the delivery of another shipment of humanitarian aid to Palestinians. According to a statement from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the aid package includes approximately 100 tons of food supplies and medicine. The aid is specifically designed to assist vulnerable groups, particularly children and infants, who have been enduring the catastrophic repercussions of Israeli-induced starvation. The statement indicated that King Mohammed VI insisted that crews transport this humanitarian aid by air, to ensure that supplies reach Palestinian recipients urgently and directly. The initiative is part of Morocco's ongoing support for Gaza as the genocide wages on in the enclave. The aid delivery also shows the monarch's unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of Palestinians, the ministry's statement concluded. Morocco has been active in providing direct assistance to Gaza through the Al-Quds Committee, which King Mohammed VI chairs, under the main focus is supporting the Palestinian cause and coordinating aid efforts. The North African country has sent several batches of humanitarian aid and medical supplies in the past two months. Early this month, trucks carrying supplies and marked with the Moroccan flag as well as the logo of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Solidarity made their way through the streets of Gaza. In late July, the King sent nearly180 tons of emergency food, medical supplies, and shelter materials to support Palestinians in Gaza through an arranged delivery route. Although this humanitarian initiative, among others, contributes to alleviating a small part of the humanitarian catastrophe that Gazans face under genocide, Israel's continued illegal efforts to block aid continue to hinder efforts significantly. The Israeli blockade has been denying access to food and medical aid to the enclave since March 18, an act that international human rights groups call a 'weapon of war.' The latest data from the enclave's health ministry indicated that the death toll from starvation and malnutrition jumped to 266 people, of whom 112 are children.
