Injury-depleted Diamondbacks place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, give James McCann first start this season
CHICAGO (AP) — The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox.
Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4-1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games.
Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves.
McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60).
He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets and Orioles.
'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I've admired him from across the field through a couple of his organizations.'

The Diamondbacks remain without center fielder Corbin Carroll. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year went on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with a chip fracture in his left wrist, and a timeline for his return is unknown.
Carroll hasn't played since a pitch hit him in the left hand last Wednesday in Toronto.
Infielder Eugenio Suarez was still out the lineup Wednesday after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Shane Smith on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor returned after injuring his shoulder on a swing Monday and sitting out Tuesday.

PARIS (AP) — Kylian Mbappé has accused Paris Saint-Germain of moral harassment in a legal filing, the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed on Thursday. The Real Madrid star is at odds with his former club, arguing PSG owes him 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages. Mbappé is also unhappy with the way he was treated by the Ligue 1 club when the France captain was sidelined before the 2023-24 season, following his decision not to extend his club contract. The prosecutor's office said Mbappé is 'denouncing the 'lofting' he claimed to have been subjected to at Paris Saint-Germain.' The word lofting is used in France to describe a practice that involves isolating a player from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons. Mbappé joined Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer after scoring a club-record 256 goals in seven years at PSG, which won the Champions League without him this year. Mbappé's relationship with PSG ended amid deep tensions, and some fans booed him in his last home game at Parc des Princes. PSG felt let down by Mbappé after offering him the most lucrative contract in club history when he signed a new contract in 2022. But Mbappé was frustrated because he felt promises to sign key players were not kept. When he signed that deal, he was paraded in front of fans holding up a jersey with 2025 on it. Mbappé was reportedly annoyed because the contract was until 2024 — with a player's option for an extra season. Mbappé stunned PSG in June 2023 by informing the club he would not take the option for an extra year. With his contract effectively into its final year, it put PSG in the position of needing to sell Mbappé to avoid losing him for nothing when the contract expired. His PSG career could have ended that summer amid a tense transfer standoff. Wrexham opens next season against ex-Premier League side Southampton
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Wrexham will play relegated Premier League team Southampton in its opening game of the season. Wrexham will begin its first campaign in 43 years in English soccer's second tier away at St Mary's on Aug. 9. The Welsh team has enjoyed a spectacular rise under celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Just two years ago, Wrexham was playing non-league soccer in England's fifth tier. After three straight promotions, it is one tier below the Premier League and faces a Southampton team that was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal last season. The game will be screened live in the U.K., another sign of the growing interest in Wrexham. Fixtures for the second-tier Championship were published on Thursday. Wrexham plays former Premier League champion Leicester on Sept. 30. It plays Ipswich, also relegated from the top flight last season, on Nov. 22 and Sheffield United on Boxing Day. Marte's mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Marte, who hit a solo home run in the first inning Tuesday night, was seen visibly upset during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh as Lovullo put his arm around his player and consoled him. 'I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers,' Lovullo said, according to the Arizona Republic. 'I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.' '(I told him): 'I love you and I'm with you, and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.'' Marte declined to comment on the incident through a team official. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo said the fan 'should be banned, for sure' and called for Major League Baseball to intervene. 'That can't happen,' Perdomo said. 'We can't continue to do that … here in MLB.'
